My first post on this forum, and I'm already not impressed...

I'm having a problem with my 737NGX HGS, as it's gone blank. I went to http://forum.avsim.net/topic/351105-ngx-hgs-not-working/ and was shocked to see the responses over there to this guy's question about the same thing.

A lot of users here should stand back and take a look at their posts - I sat on this one for two hours before opening my mouth because I don't want to be like the undercurrent of "everyone here but me is stupid" feel that the AVSIM forums have to them. Alledging in public that a person is a criminal in any public venue here in this country is libel, and slander, and can be prosecuted, so I'd be careful about calling someone a "pirate" were I you. You know who you are.

I will send in my .dll file to be fixed by PMDG, but that seems a little silly; I don't have to send a .dll to microsoft when it's knackered.

Second:

I see in a lot of forums like REX that you're supposed to put your name, order number, etc., into your post. Don't own REX, (nor do I have it before someone opens their mouth), but I'm not putting my personal info out there on any forum here or anywhere else. Not recommended.

Cheers.

Nothing wrong with proving ownership in order to obtain support. Piracy is a major problem that can topple these small businesses.

But I do agree that too many folks get out of hand and join bandwagons in bashing folks out of a feeling to 'belong'.

You should take your support questions directly to PMDG: http://support.precisionmanuals.com/Main/Default.aspx

if you think its silly to send your ddl.xml to pmdg than you dont have to its up to you no one is forcing you, other way if you have back up your drive you can fix it yourself as i had done when i had a similar problem with the hud. As the above poster has suggested there alot of pirated software going around and guess the only way reduce it is to do what other forum are doing ftx, rexe, fsxcrew2 etc

Mine did the same thing. Sent in my dll.xml and was fixed up in a day. Just submit a ticket they'll get it sorted.

Kev,

Welcome to the fora.

While I'm not entirely sure of your motivation and tactic of showing up in a forum and starting off with your first post demeaning the members of said forum, I will agree with you to a certain extent. Sometimes participants force a legitimate request into a childish diatribe.

However, after just being lumped in with the supposed unimpressive membership, my initial thought is to just let you figure it out on your own. I'm not saying that to slight you, I'm just saying it to point out that if you're going to show up in a forum for support, you might want to reconsider casting a negative impression of said support group.

If you're going to talk about legal issues, make sure you know the actual issue before making statements like this. Put simply, you're not entirely correct. Slander is generally related only to transient media, such as speech. Libel would be printed, as is the case here in the forums. However, it is dependent on two main issues (though there are more). First, it has to be proven to be false. Second, it has to be proven that the person incurred some form of harm. Here on a forum, it would be very difficult to prove the latter.

I will send in my .dll file to be fixed by PMDG, but that seems a little silly; I don't have to send a .dll to microsoft when it's knackered.

You are correct. You don't send things to Microsoft. You just have to go do the work yourself.

Some program messed up your registry? Oh, man...see KB124341342512 for the solution. It provides step-by-step instructions. Be careful, though. Changes to the registry can cause the computer and other programs to stop working.

In this case, PMDG is fixing your problem for you. Those jerks!

Welcome to 2012 (almost 2013). Google your name. You'll find yourself all over the place. Using your first and last name here in a forum isn't going to add or detract from your current web "safety." Sorry to burst your safety bubble.

and was shocked to see the responses over there to this guy's question about the same thing.

It was Arjen who made the pirate comment.....1 person.

Reading your post initially, I thought it was a screaming match. Only one bad response. You made out it to be WW3 breaking out.

I'm just curious about the real "DANGER" of posting real name and surname... What is the risk? If someone want to use a name he can just invent one. You're not giving your personal data, credit card info and so on.

To me it is a paranoic attitude hidden in modern "privacy" protection.

If you have doubts about posting your name in public, simply don't post.

Basically this is a useless topic, mainly polemic, as the solution was already given, and pmdg have a support system that prevent public data diffusion (support ticket).

If you do not accept forum rules, please, just don't write in the forum. That's simple...

I noticed that who ask for privacy is always someone who need to hide something... Is it also your case? (that is not to accuse you, but is derived to many proof I had supporting my theory)

Over exaggerated post.

I also expected a total slugging match in that link and one person said the single word of pirate.

If you needed to post a complaint thread just over that, then whoa get out now. These forums can get much, much worse.

Hello Kev, welcome to Avsim.

While it may not have made a good first impression on you, we have just a normal community with the same types of people you will find everywhere else, except the thing we have in common is the love of the hobby.

Yes we do have SAMs or Self Appointed Moderators who make it their business policing the forums as well as people who enjoy dissecting every sentence written and in the process can lose sight of the topic at hand. All human stuff.

Post when you need assistance in an issue, you will have a lot of people willing to help.

Post your personal opinion on something, and be ready to have others agree or disagree.

The main thing is, don't be afraid to participate, it is a very good community.

Hi Kyle, not wanting to detract from the Kev's HGS issue here but I thought I'd Google my name as a little test since I only use the Avsim forum and got to the end of page 4 without seeing any links to 'Me'...how disappointing.

Kev, I hope you get your HGS back soon. You'll find the folks here on the forum to be generally very helpful.

And this is an excellent response that sums it up perfectly. To the OP: don't fall into the trap of thinking the whole community here is arrogant/rotten in some way because of one person's silly comment (which he probably got a warning over). Most people here are very helpful and intelligent and I think that shows in the link you posted as well.

Are they after a .dll file or dll.xml, since the second is built on your system depending on what add-ons you use it is much easier for PMDG to fix it if you send it to them, rather than try and give you advice as to what to do. I doubt M$ would do that, but then I have never actually managed to contact a "REAL" person when looking for support there.

they are after the dll.xml which is causing the hud to be blank, and if the op has manged to back up his drive some where he could easily fix the fault himself, by just replacing the dll.xml from the saved drive to the corrupted one

OK, yes, you're right. I was over the top. Sorry; my apologies. I've been reading the AVSIM forums for about 6 months as a lurker before I registered. And because I posted it here, it looks like my problem is with PMDG, which it isn't. As a moderator on another forum with about 2K members, I'm just surprised that so many posts turn into a shouting match or a flurry of smart remarks. That particular comment on that other thread was just the one that put me over the top, and you're right, it was by one person. It really irritated me that had I been the original poster on that thread, I would be the one being called a pirate without any evidence whatsoever, which maligns the rep of the poster. I was angry, and I apologize for my remark.

I've googled myself before, and all is acceptable.

I'm going to try to fix this myself. Want to fly today and want a working HGS. I think I can sort out my .xml file.

Fixed it. Opened up the file, no problems. Was mislocated following a Win7 system restore point into another directory. Works great, now that it's in the appdata/roaming/microsoft/fsx directory where it belongs. My thanks to pete_auau and others who mentioned the .dll.xml file. Sorry for my rant.
