That is just crazy smooth but he doesn't seem to be running weather engine or traffic setting .

What does the number mean? So LOD_RADIUS=32, I guess it means that in a given 32mile radius that the textures are always loaded?

TERRAIN] LOD_RADIUS= ?? This setting controls the visibility of the textures and objects in the immediate area surrounding the aircraft. This should not be set over 6.5, as it is a known source of OOM errors - even 6.5 will cause OOM’s when combined with other scenery packages, cloud levels or very complex aircraft, etc.. Maximum FSX default is 4.5, and FSX will reset this back to 4.5 any time one changes any settings and saves them while in-game. For testing FSX 4.5 is the recommended setting. Note, too, that the zoom level also has an impact on appearance.

 

My understanding was that this number max was "9", can't recall now where I got that.  Anyway, I doubt that 32 would do anything more that is possible with these lower settings.

 

There are plenty of discussions around about how far it is possible to see clearly anyway, and beyond the natural horizon is not useful.  I use 5.5 the higher the number the greater the demand on you CPU.

Yeah, usually these kinds of parameters have an upper limit. If you set it above that, FSX will usually just ignore the line and use its default setting.

 

This is why you sometimes get people that say "OMG I changed XX from 40 to 996595499999999999 and now FSX is super smooth!" - it's just because their wonky tweak was ignored completely by FSX, allowing it to use the more sensible default setting.

Why anyone would want to set the LOD Radius to 32 is quite beyond my ability to understand.

Doesn't matter. He did all that change, cranked all sliders out and maxed everything, went to His recording and rendered it frame by frame with FSRender. It probably look an hour to render but it made His slides got turn out smooth. That's how people do videos. His system isn't running the sim like that with those settings.

why would it be weird to have textures set at 1024?

 

the sim was designed to run with textures at this size. in my experience, using 4096 textures, especially for clouds and water does nothing but cause performance issues, more so if you like high AA levels.

The max is 9, and what we're seeing there is therefore ............. 9

I have had mine set to 9.5 (same as Word Not Allowed's recommendation some time ago) and it worked well for a couple of weeks then saw OOM's. The Affinity Mask setting is way out of line too.  FS9 days.  Old computer setting.  It will drain all the resources out of his/her system too!
