I just want to know how someone can't be a REX fan?   I'm not talking about weather engine, I'm talking about textures, which are the best on the market. I'm using some AS2012 textures, and they are simply not as good and realistic as ones that REX has to offer, especially clouds and runways.

So, will this be a free upgrade for those who have purchased REX 2.0+ Overdrive or will we need to buy it separately?

We've been graciously giving free upgrades for over 4 years. We have too much invested in R & D to simply give them away. However, there will be discounts available for those who own REX.

Me too.  Crud. They're offering $5 off to REX Essentials owners... which is ok given that it's a $40 product.  But considering I spent almost $60 on Essential+OD, I think $5 isn't much of an incentive to get the new textures.

Numbers are a bit off Charlie. Texture Direct is $34.95, if you have previously purchased REX, it's $29.95! REX Essential PLUS w/OverDrive is $44.95, nowhere near $60.

Very sorry Tim!  I used a Euro price for Texture Direct that included VAT.  And I completely bungled the euro to dollar conversion for Plus w/OD.  More examples of why I avoided math like the plague in college.

maybe shouldn't be asking here, but will I be effectively replacing REXEssential Plus with this? How do the two coexist atm? Use REXEPlus for weather and REXDirect for textures after reverting original FSX textures first?

EDIT: nm, read all about it on the official forums, product looks really amazing, especially in terms of the incredible number of variables. I'm sure this is another step forward in making fsx even more realistic.

One of the most mysterious software releases I've ever witnessed. No road map, no pricing structure, no features list. If they're just previewing and generating buzz that's one thing, but now that 1 (of 4?) components to the product are on the retail market there's no excuse for the lack of info.

Actually, it's 1 of 3.  The other two are; Weather Direct and Weather Architecture.  The fourth part if there is any, is the partnership announcement.  Brief details of all parts are at http://www.rexdirectexperience.com/.

 

Really though, what REX is doing is no different than HiFi has done with ASN.  AS2012 had both textures and a weather engine, but ASN is just the weather engine.

Other than pricing and timing for the yet-to-be-released products (pretty common not to include this information), I'm not sure what you're missing.  There'll be three products - new textures (just released), new real-world wx injector (like Opus, ASN or FSGRW) and a wx "builder" app.

I am not sure what you mean by "not a full product".  There are over 16,000 textures with this product, ALL brand new completely made from scratch and enhanced beyond what we have done with previous versions.

 

Yes it doesn't have a flight planner and weather engine.  We decided to break that appart from the textures because it allows us more flexibility.   Current with the REX Essential Products if we need to make a quick change with the weather engine or other component we have to make HUGH installs and it becomes extremely complicated.   By breaking it apart it makes it more managible and we can issue fixes or updates more rapidly to our customers.

The road map is simple:  4 products we are releasing one at a time.

In my personal opinion both are great.  BUT, we have learned A LOT since we first released REX and Overdrive.   We have taken out knowledge of the platforms and put that into REX 4 and thus made an improved product.   We also have tried new approaches with REX 4 Texture Direct.

 

So yes they are just textures, but they are greatly improved and enhanced.   Compare the runways and taxiways alone, they are a greatly increased in detail.  Makes the default textures of any default airport look like a high priced add-on.
