Thanks Steve - As suggested by an earlier poster (to whom I'm also thankful), I think we've nailed the individual effect that is responsible for the performance drop ;  fx_PMDG_NGX_engsmoke.bgl.fx

.......... I am discovering an amazingly more frame rate friendly NGX with this effect disabled!

So yes, DX with the fixer is now just hands down better with every add-on for me now... the future is so bright now, with this fixed up DX10 world.

Well done sir!

Thanks Dave. Guess what I am off to do.

How do I use AA in DX10....I just got the fixer now

http://forum.avsim.net/topic/421674-dx10-and-fsaa-some-personal-observations/

I dont have any issues with DX9, no crashes or OOMs, but I also would like to see some head to head comparison shots of DX9 and DX10 shot at the same location.

The only reason I would switch is if DX10 looks better, but its hard to say since no one posts comparison shots.

Jim, screen shots I believe would not show what the DX10 experience is truly like. For one, it will not show atmosphere, if you know what I mean. With the option to now use Bloom and cockpit shadows, I don't think a screenie will help.

Furthermore, everyone uses different addons like Sweetfx, shade etc,If you surf around the DX10 forum, there is screen shots that have been posted over the last few days, but you will need to find them.

To do comparison shots would also mean the user would have to switch back to DX9 so......

Thanks Julian. So would you say that the effects are not so much of a night and day difference as far as looks go, or just not that visible from screen shots.

There is an AA selection on the mask. Use the drop down and pick which one you want...  I'm using the 16 'Q' and find it great.

You can't capture smoothness on a screenshot. DX10 is not so much about better graphics, although it has some advantages regarding to water, use of bloom and VC shadows. You can only upgrade scenery for real difference in eye-candy, or use a mod like SweetFX for more vibrance, contrast and effects.

This isn't about A/B screen shots..... other than stating here are black squares where in DX9, lights should be... under non-Steve control...and here is DX10 running like the DX9 you love.  That's it...you don't need pictures folks.  You are getting a performance FPS kick-in-the-pants with this..and you are getting BACK the DX9 look of your sim....  So..DX9 and DX10 POST STEVE would look exactly alike..and THAT is what this is all about, but with FSX now running on performance steroids!   That's the deal....

Read my post below...I think it nicely sums it up in a nutshell what the 'fix' is, and does....

Yes, probably not visible  from the screen shots. Mind you, if I had younger eyes. I can tell you with hand on my heart, that the switch over to 10 was well and truly worth it.

Thanks Mitch and Mork. Guess I can go ahead and skip it then if there's not really an environmental difference in looks.

If I was having all the usual performance issues like stutters, ooms, low FPS, etc. I would probably jump on it. But, since my sim runs fine, if there's not a big change in "looks" I wont be needing it.

The VC shadows would be cool, but since I am mainly a PMDG flyer, it wont do me any good since they dont model cockpit shadows.

Thanks for the insight guys.

Good clarification to put in as this is not true of the somewhat better AA and AF of NV cards in DX9.

It might help your fellow simmers that run the ATI cards to post pics of your catalyst settings and those in fixer as well as any other settings in the FS.cfg, there are so many post of users with the same experience that could use your help as well as that from a few others that have found there way.

Cheers!

If the DX10 fixer is all that great why don't somebody show before and after screenshots ?, it would really help Steve sell it.

How do you capture 'smoothness' in a screen shot?

For me the difference between dx9 and dx10 is night and day. On my system, Steve's dx10 fixer is probley the best 35 bucks I ever spent on fsx, thank you Steve.

I got all my sliders full right except for the water ( water is like at 2x something I can't remember but it's where orbx suggested to put it). And I also got bloom on which is pretty cool. My sim is running smooth as silk.

The only thing is the water, it's to darn shiny, is there a fix?

I'm lovin' the cockpit shadows!  Wow...that is one of the best features for XPX..and now I have it in FSX....:)))))))   Back to the Carenado Bonanza...and Bangor, Maine!

The water?  Yessir!   Open up the Water Mask..and you can play with all the settings until you get the water exactly how you want it....same for Bloom!  I have cut down to about 70 percent in how it highlights the plane fuselage....man, there is a TON of tweaks you can do to make FSX now your own....:)

No difference in environmental?!?!?...you have got to be kidding?   BLOOM....and now no FPS performance hit whatsoever....  What I meant, is that if you like how FSXG looks in DX9...you get the same quality...no loss of quality....no artifacts...BUT..you pick up massive sim performance....anybody that passes this by....is to be compared to walking past the counter where FS(11) is sitting...and moving on down the line. A working DX10....opens up finally, your modern system...and lets it FLY......  Also, you have to remember, I have always had my system running near to full on...but now...I have the ACES Vision Edition on my system....all graphic subsystems enabled at full out........and man....does it LOOK GOOD!   The coast of Maine has never looked better....LOL. I even have SHIPS AND FERRIES full on out...and no hit to FPS....   Ah lawd...this is a hoot!
