Microsoft is "interested" in PC Gaming

Featured Replies

Definitely interesting. There's always the possibility that they may wish to dive back into Flight Simulation, but I wouldn't be so sure.

Of course it would be nice for a new Microsoft FS, but at the end of the day - I am still content with FSX.

I'll definitely keep my eyes and ears out (although it'd probably be all over this forum if they announced a new FS).

Kind regards,

Luke Bischoff

Honestly, I really think they might.

I don't know, I really don't understand why any Flight Simmer would like to see Microsoft back in the Flight Simulator game. With the advent of Prepar3D V2.X and the fact that to a great extent it is backwards compatible with FSX Addons, who, with hundreds or perhaps thousands of dollars already invested invested in Flight Sim would want to start from scratch. The flight sim community already rejected Flight. The main stream of Flight Sim has always been the Microsoft Flight Simulator. Its been around for decades and it will continue to be around for sometime in the form of Prepar3D. I have no doubt in my mind that in as little as a year from now the majority Flight Simmers will be using Prepare3D V2.X. FSX will still be around but I doubt it will have the legs of FS9. FS9 has only lasted as long as it has because FSX is such a pile of dog poo. That's not going to be the case with Prepar3D V2.x. Its already maturing rapidly and is a much more stable platform than FSX. It took me years to build a machine that could run FSX and a huge amount of work get it stable and smooth with decent setting. In the short time that Prepar3D V2 has been around its already left FSX in the half-penny place on my system. Granted it runs extremely well on my built for FSX Monster System.

The only way that MS are getting back into flight sim is by reviving Flight which is not a sim its a game or they will try to muscle in on the action with Prepar3D V2 and try to strike  a deal with LM to sell an entertainment version of Prepar3D V2 as FS11. As a Flight Simmer I don't think that is desirable. LM are far better steward of our beloved FS that MS were or ever would be IMO.

The problem with Prepar3D is that it isn't the "home" sim, with all the license crap that it has. I would have switched today if I knew all my addons would be compatible without having to buy them again.

Ah... no.

My DX10 FSX is just as good as the for rent version of P3terd... and without all the license horse sh#t.

There seems to be some confusion about P3D.. It    Is   FSX. You can call it what ever you want.... but in the end... it's FSX with LM tweeks.

What we are speculating about is a real FS 11.  MS could do two versions... the "Entertainment" version, and the "Pro" version (ALA; Win 7 home/Pro/Ult), The Pro version (with collaboration with LM) could be the rentable P3D4.X for real flight training.

If MSFS is truly done... then I speculate we will all move on to Outerra or X-plane... X-plane being far and away ahead of the game. P3D will never be the next sim.

You haven't taken into account how stubborn Flight Sim people really are. They can be very stubborn.

I did get an educational licence for P3D but when I went to reinstall it after reinstalling Win7, it said my licence was no good and to contact LM, I tried to contact LM and they were difficult to get a hold of, so I removed it. I have no interest in going down that road again so I will stay with FSX, and I wouldn't mind getting my money back for that P3D licence seeing as it was no good.

If you purchased that licence less than 60 days ago, you can get a refund.

Man you truly are delusional!

I'd be careful declaring for P3D2 just now. It's early days yet, and so far the P3D road has been a bumpy one. Still too many caveats and uncertainties ahead.

Time will tell.

Consider that LM would almost certainly NOT have purchased USAGE AND DEVELOPMENT rights to FS unless there was a No Compete clause in that agreement.

Or as Wikipedia states- "Lockheed purchased the source code to MS ESP."

That seems to make it quite obvious that MS can not sell an entertainment version of FS, at any time in the near future- if ever.

And if that is indeed the case then Microsoft Flight Simulator is dead and MS are out of the Flight Simulation biz for good. You guys might get a Game. Yes a flying game like HAWK or Wings of Prey out of MS. They are never going to touch Lockheed Martin or Laminar Research when it comes to a real desktop Flight simulator. What is coming with P3DV2.2 is superb VAS management So it looks like the end of OOMs for P3DV2 so long as one is reasonable. I can already run it with setting very close to maximum without getting OOM's. That's just not the case with FSX. P3DV2 is superior to FSX in every way and will continue to leave it behind even further.

If you want to stick with FSX that fine. I see nothing wrong with that decision but hoping that somehow MS are coming back to fix everything is pure fantasy.

Man you truly are delusional!

My bet is that I'm not...  But hey... if you P3D people want to pay twice as much for FSX (granted, already tweaked for you), then knock yourself out.

P3D was started in 2009... in 5 years it's still not the majority sim, and never will be. Period. It's just as dated as FSX, and always will be. A 1979 Chevy Vega with a V8 swap is still a 1979 Chevy Vega.

Outerra, and 64 bit X-plane will be far and away better then anything LM can do with FSX... Unless of course they start fresh. Lets see if P4D is in the works, then you got something.

Yes, for FSX SP2. Anything MS would do now would be a different species all together. It's like saying LM bought "pong", and no one can make any tennis games/sims ever again.

Raise your hands if you'd like to have one!  :D

I remember seeing a vintage Chevy II Nova SS 396 not long ago and thinking that was a pretty sexy car.   I mean... a Nova?? :D  Who would have thought?

All I know is that P3D is still under development and FSX isn't. Also, FSX wasn't built from scratch, it was built on FS9, the same way that P3D is being built on ESP;  we're just seeing the intermediate steps.

I have no idea what would happen if MS got back into flight simulation.  Judging from past experience, people would complain bitterly. Happened with FSX, remember?

The LM lawyers would have been remiss in their contract to purchase FSX-ESP, if they didn't include a clause prohibiting MS from offering any type of flight simulator software to the marketplace. That is very likely the reason that FLIGHT was suddenly canned.
