Now, the big question is can I keep my hands out of the cookie jar?

Hi Bob....well I don't know about the 'cookie jar', lol...but I have just proved my summation beyond a doubt!!!

 

I am flying out of the Dominican Rebublic,  taking off from Punta Cana.  I took off with my three Scenery Object Sliders (yeah...'sliders'...right....more about that later...lol!!!) at:

 

From top to bottom:------  in Scenery Objects:

 

Extremely Dense

Extremely Dense

and the third as:

Dense

 

The above also with my TERRAIN OBJECT sliders all at full right....

 

Ok...I was running between 24-33 FPS (Unlimited, but with an out-board 30 FPS locked with Precision X)  I started to raise the third 'slider'....(truly a filter slide...bad, bad...) to the next Very Dense, and noted my performance, in animation and FPS reporting. Well...(slapping hands together....), not only did I start to stay for a low of 26-33, but no degradation to smooth animation, etc. I then went for the third slider, to like the others...Extremely Dense, and to my surprise, my FPS are now keeping pretty much at 27-33.  So...this proves beyond a doubt to at least this lad...that you do INDEED cause CPU cycles expended to manually 'dummy' down the rendering to the screen of a 3PD's product. They coded it to be seen at full rendering, and you lose big time, by thinking you are conserving system/CPU/GPU resources...by throttling what goes to the screen, via the slide positions.  I saw this in FSX..and now I see it as well in P3D v2.3  The best video performance, is with the Scenery sliders at max 'full open, non throttled' performance, and for that matter, I have seen the same now with Shadows at Ultra, from my former Medium, as well as Ultra for water. I now have everything at full max, including Mesh set to 1M, as REX recommends that for optimal and full-view wave action upon water bodies.  So....there it is...  Have fun with your 'cookie' quandary, lol.  It's all fun....and I say..."load that sucker, right up!"

 

Well...back to the Dominican Republic, via Rex's Medium water color,with enhanced coral...and Glimmer for the water treatment.  Dang....but is life good....!

It really seems that a full install is the way to go for top performance - I read a post on this in the P3D forums.

The patch worked fine, but at this stage, with few addons, I will re-install the whole thing.

 

I Love the sim, a re-install is what LM recommends, but I wish you could patch to get the same optimum performance

I don't have trees and buildings ticked off.  I have clouds, simobjects, plane, both cast and receive, etc.   I'm also now as per my post at Ultra...and the scene is klller!  Shadows look fantastic

 

Oh...also as per REX....the sliders at 20,000 30,000 and 6,000

GROUND_SHADOW_TEXTURE_SIZE=2048.   I noticed you have not used the 512. I tried this but saw nothing. Others saw a new sim it seemed like.

Oh...really?  512?  I will try that, why not and report back, but with my .cfg as you see it...up and down between 27-33 FPS!   I'll give that a go Bob and thanks for the head's-up,......and yes, I'm a C377 Hound.  Gawd, but I love that plane, turbo'ised...  Cheers!

Post Edit:  Just to be clear about FPS, I am NOT saying that you will stay at a higher or constant rate of FPS with my above recommendations...no...you will just like myself, fluctuate in your FPS (under Unlimited), but...but..you will get a much more and fat, lush scenery output with still hitting your high end of fluctuating FPS numbers as you fly. Better scenery to fly over...and better actual FPS performance for what YOU ARE NOW RENDERING as premium!

 

I completely agree. V2.3 definitely improves over 2.2. I maxed out everything under the scenery tab over San Francisco bay (ORBX NCA) and was rewarded with the most impressive flight in any flight simulator I have seen. See the video  below:

 

  

 

The fps stays at around 20 but dips into teens momentarily that gives some judders. Same thing happens in PNW over Seattle. However it still gives you a great sense of immersion. I have cloned my HDD so I have two P3d V2.2 installed on the same computer. One is patched from V2.1 and the other is a full 2.2 installation. Both are patched to V2.3 by just clicking the update button. My experience indicates that there is absolutely no difference between the patch and full installation in 2.2. May be I will try the full V2.3 installation on one HDD to see if there is any difference.

Well it certainly did wonders for me. I can actually run with cloud shadows on with minimal impact. And, visually, looks the same imo.

So after spending a little time adjusting my graphics setting to my liking I took my first somewhat proper flight in the A2A Cherokee.
First off I got a lot more out of it than I expected! I see some are reporting lower FPS than V2.2 but smoother. Agree on the smoother but I am getting much higher FPS. Granted I have not adjusted Traffic sliders yet except road traffic at 20%. I have everything maxed out in the Scenery tab and very respectable setting under lighting. On this flight with Orbx PNW installed I flew from FSDreamteams CYVR to FTX CYSE in weather that I would never consider flying in for real. The whole flight was incredibly smooth. FPS at CYVR about 40 on route about 60 and at CYSE about 20. CYSE is a performance killer even with all the bells and whistled off IMHO and I don’t see why it should be. My gut feeling is that ORBX just didn’t do a good job on the scenery from that point of view. Though it looks fantastic.

Anyway it was the most emersive flight I have taken ever in Flight Sim. Virtually stutter free over the 35 min flight. I will be uploading it to Youtube but I really wanted to show you guys the oceans swells up close with water on ultra. It is a mammoth leap ahead of V2.2.

Remember when you were crazy if you tried to set water in FSX above 2 x Low for fear of killing performance? Well watch this and look at the frame rate. You can see the caps are almost braking:

Thanks Dave no blurry textures here so probably not needed - thats the best thing about P3D - it just works out of the box no more blurry textures - YEAH
