FSX SE has better VAS management . Can P3D get this too ?

I have had many long (4+ hour) flights in P3D with no OOM. I also have had a flight from KBUR-KSFO OOM just prior to landing. They WILL happen but not often.

SE is just a new gimmick, it is NOT the holy grail and as others have noted - it's not comparing apples to apples.

Kevin,

The title of this thread is FSX SE has .............

Pray enlighten us what is the point of YOUR post if you are extolling the virtues of P3D over tMicrosoft FSX boxed ...... silly me for thinking you were talking about the product that was the subject of the O.P.

Dave.

Silly you indeed for assuming I meant something other than I did! :P

I merely offered my thoughts on matters that I am informed enough to offer them on, allowing others to infer meaning from it if it helps. Since I do not own FSX SE I wouldn't dream of proffering any opinion on it! Neither did I extoll the virtues of anything, I do currently run P3D2 exclusively but FSX MS clearly does still have advantages in certain situations, for example if you wish to fly anything PMDG :) Anyway, Merry Xmas :D

On my 3 monitor outside view pc I carefully have to choose my settings.

I have a seperate scenerio ( different settings in the cfg files for daytime flying and nighttime flying )

Rob A has posted several tips to keep VAS usage as low as possible and I thank him for that.

But shouldn't LM fix the extra VAS usage when going through the menu and then start flying , instead of loading everything, then save it , shutdown P3D and then reload the saved flight....

I am sure LM can do more to optimize VAS usage.

P3d offers more eye candy , for the pilots that wants to fly outside the window , its really a beautiful sim ,(.but at a cost )

the new fsx se offers to the hard core flyer that fly on Vatsim and with virtual airline the only choice for long distance ,(multipule leg )

Sure you can fly with p3d but you need to monitor VAS save and reload , (not good on Vatsim )

FSX-SE went with stability instead of super high eye candy , it gives us a choice ...

Sorry, what a nonsense! Have you ever installed P3D and actually used it or are you just repeating hearsay?

LM rewrote the graphics engine and also tweaked the way the scenery engine unloads data as you fly. This was worked on for the 2.2 release, because 2.1 had serious OOM issues that made it unusable.

Even if FSX SE does have some improvements to VAS usage, those wouldn't translate directly to the new graphics engine of P3D v2.

I doubt Microsoft called they're old developers and said, "Guys, can you come in and do something about VAS usage in Microsoft Flight Simulator X?" Its all just a gimmick. They know we still play this outdated game from the stone age and thats why they decided to earn some extra pennies.

It seems most people are missing the point of the op.

He links to a bench mark test that shows boxed fsx unable to finish a flight due to oom but fsx se managing vas better and carrying on.

Did anyone bother to read it?

It is interesting reading even if you don't fly fsx se, it shows Dovetail games have definitely done some bug fixes and made it better with newer operating systems. Performance is about the same as the old version but it is much more stable and seems to manage vas better.

He never said it was better than p3d, he was just saying is it possible to have better vas management in p3d.

Prepar3d looks better but there is no doubt you can oom it very easily.

Chris

My contribution to ever to generous AVSIM.

I add a few points after new PC build andFSX + P3D 2.4 install.

Specs

Win7 64 ,4790K @ 4.7Ghz,  Gtx Titan, 3 SSD Raid Stripe Raid 0 System Drive

2 SSD Raid 0 Sim drive

other drives for addons  storage etc.

Spent years managing old PC running old i7 990 @ 4.6Ghz just fine.

But checking win7 resource monitor 99% of time only thing starving was HDD, not cpu not ram.

Hence on new build, took the knock yourself out route on HDD, and impressed so far.

Running FSX/P3D at High CPU  around 4.7 Ghz used to cause me lots appcrash, for sure on first sim load, but 80% of time no crash in same even on long haul. Still had ssd back then, but no raid.

now however at cpu 4.7Ghz, 2800Mhz ram, and more disk drive perf than you can shake a stick  at, App crash is on the Run!!!, and my win7 system resource monitor for HDD has changed from huge blocks of square rectangles to occasional mountains

with well defined tips. HUGE difference there !!!.

So I claimed victory over FSX/P3D perf cause I have both and tested with both.

To claim war bounty I proceeded to turn my P3D sliders up to around 85% generally.

And OOM VAS crash came to App crash rescue !!!! almost immediately.

!!!! CONCLUSION !!!!!!!

I did the home work for you guys and the project is complete main results.

1. Its a bit annoying to find my System is !!!ONLY!!! limited by VAS in P3D/FSX

so I am also slowly moving away from these products until VAS limit fixed, will

add a bit more Eve Online and Elite Dangerous to Mix.

2. After extensive testing on a system that eats applications like FSX/P3D

using a cooling system, that you don't wana know about, hence plenty plenty OC room.  Only limit was VAS.

3. The natural path of progression of FSX/P3D growth is blocked by VAS issue

when you consider there are other platforms out there like Elite dangerous, Eve Online that will fully use your system. In fact I will check out Xplane.

4. The only thing that needs fixing in FSX/P3D now, is the thing blocking the

    "SLIDERS" and its called !!!!VAS!!!!!!!

Give me call when its done, till then, I got some beryllium to ship to Andromeda and am packing heavy for those pirates on the way so don't get any ideas.

Now that is a totally inaccurate comment. Microsoft had nothing to do at all with FSX - Steam Edition!

Dovetail Games licensed the code from Microsoft. All work done for FSX:SE is the result of their own in-house programmers.

Sorry, I meant Dovetail Games  but judging from the comments here, it seems that many believe what I just stated.

So, you are implying that the long list of things in the change log along with the total recompile of FSX using VS 2013 is just 'vapor'?

I would have said 'steam' but honestly I'm not feeling particularly punny at the moment...

This is what I saying for months now : having a pc that is capable of running P3D with all the eye candy, but not being able to do so because of the VAS usage.....

So if FSX SE has some improvements on VAS usage, perhaps some of them are different from what LM did for P3D and might be implemented in P3D too.

Even on their website they show screenshots from P3D with Orbx and addon airports with maximum detail...

Imho bringing general VAS usage down should be high om LM priority list....

And another choice is DX10 with FSX.SE that combo would give a double dose of VAS savings and may suit the OP as he is suffering from OOMS
