FYI Turbine Duke V2 release

The GTN is nice except the database can not be updated with a lot of money.

As for the Duke, I find it an excellent addon for flight sim but still find it lacking in realism when it comes to the PT6. I still wish someone out there could simulate a PT6 perfectly but I don't see that happening. Maybe we just need a new platform

If you have RXP gauges you can use that file for the navdata.  But you're right about the rest of the data, charts, safe taxi etc

We're fixing all that and we're quite close to finishing.

Now THAT's what i've been waiting to hear (well, there is one other announcement i'm looking forward to more... :-) )

Please explain what you mean by perfectly. Thank you.

Turboprops in FSX is really hard to maked right.

I was the coder on the Aerosoft Twin Otter, and we where also restricted by the same limitations as Realair has been.

Every turboprop, except the Majestic Dash-8 Q400, are based on the default FSX PT-6 turboprop engine, even the PMDG J41.

But even if the default FSX turboprop model is based on the PT-6, it´s simultion is pretty poor and lacking.

There are a limited set of variables in the .air and Aircraft.cfg files You can play with, but that way You won´t solve it.

The rest simply needs to be faked in the gauges by adding custom values like torque, Ng, fuel flow and ITT.

You can get close to achieving the right gauge readings, but the background simulation of the turboprop will still be questionable.

Majestic has their own set of flight and engine model running in a kind of seperate sim outside FSX / P3D, but thats a rather complex way of doing it and only makes sense for a project likae that, since the target group reaches further out as "Just" normal hobbyist simmers. It´s a very bold way of doing it.

For aircraft addons like the Turbine Duke and the Twin Otter, the resources needes to reach that state would never could pay itself back.

But I would still without hesitation say that the solution used on the Turbine Duke (and Twin Otter) is really not that bad as long as You learn to live with it´s limitations.

The job done by Realair is really top notch !

Hey Guys, I was able to 'reverse engineer' some blank textures using the PDukeV2 kit, a combination of TDukev2 textures, a little fudging, and some help from one of Ron's TDukeV1 schemes(for the oil splash).  With this you can use the PDukev2 kit and work out some fuselage/tail schemes, tho I would recommend leaving the nacelles alone until the official paint kit is out.  I'll include a PSDs for the black panel day/night for registration numbers.  I'll get it uploaded in a day or two.

Hey Robert. I am out working right now but will jot down some of the things I am referring to when I get home. That way I can load up the duke and write down the exact details.

Hey FinnJ. That's what I mean. Probably just need a new platform to redesign everything

For what it's worth, I learned how to manage turboprops on the Turbine Duke v1, then applied alot of what I learned to the JS4100, and then to the MJ Dash 8, and back to the Turbine Duke v2. Each airplane had it's own peculiarities, but they all observe the same basic laws regarding inverse torque relationships between prop rpm, lowered torque output at higher altitudes, and delayed spool times. Maybe the feathering is a little spotty, but for normal procedures I always found FSX turbine addons to be quite decent, Real Air's being amongst the very best.

Jack,

We are perfectly aware of the limitations in FSX turbo props, so there is little point in listing things that we are bound to be aware of, as we spent several hundred patient hours finding workarounds to the worst of them. See earlier post from a developer of the Otter.

Yep, that's my experience too.

I have a confession to make. I have been pootling around in planes of all shapes and sizes for years.....without ever having taken the time to learn how to fly them properly, or to use proper navigation techniques. Recently, I have started getting somewhat bored of the simple way that I do things, so I think it's about time that I learned the basics.

To be honest, I have looked at various lessons and instruction videos in the past, but everything happened too quickly for me to work out what the hell I was supposed to be doing. That being the case, I need a bit of help from you guys.

Bear in mind here that I don't even know how to set up my plane properly for a flight (correct trim etc), and I also know diddly squat about navigation using ADB/VOR/DME......blah blah blah. Are there any instructional videos (on YouTube or elsewhere) that would enable me to grasp the concepts, so that I could actually understand and (more importantly) replicate them?

The reason I am asking in this thread is because I am very tempted to use the RealAir Turbine Duke v2 for these flight lessons.

I would love to be able to get the hang of planning flights properly, and then using proper navigational techniques to get there! I am just keeping my fingers crossed that I can find an instructional video that is very easy to understand. Any help finding such a video would be greatly appreciated!

Christopher,

It's not a video, but I can recommend the website Flight Simulator Navigation by Charles Wood as an accessible and entertaining way to get to grips with the subject.

The Duke v2 may be great, but it'll be a testing platform as a basic instrument/navigation trainer. Something with a little less performance would make your life easier.

Cheers,

Nick

Thanks, Nick. You are probably right about "diving in at the deep end" with respect to using the Turbine Duke for this. I am probably expecting too much of myself! It's probably better to think of the Turbine Duke as the aircraft that I want to use for my first "solo flight" (so to speak)

I like the idea of using it for your check ride/solo. That's a nice idea!

On an unrelated note, I really like the fact that you can shift the radios/GPS round on the panel, it's a very very nice touch and gives you a strong sense of "making it your own" as it were.

Christopher,

Two very good sources: the first one is condensed information by an instrument rated pilot that also happens to enjoy simming and the second are in depth workshops done by the founder of PilotEdge.  Both of these guys have helped me tremendously.
