What gets my peeve is when people spend all that time planning only to turn the AP on at 200 feet and proceed to watch the whole flight till they turn the AP off on final. I understand the autopilot has purpose and that is to assist the pilot but its purpose is not to be the pilot.

If you're taking the time to simulate a 14 hour flight you'll probably simulate what happens in the real world also.

True but it's completely legal to hand fly to 28,000 after 28,000 the ap has to come on due to RSVM. I know quite a few airline pilots and most of them hand fly all they can to stay proficient. Everyone has their own style when it Comes to flying whether that be in real life or the sim.

It is easy enough to get bored in the real world that I never saw the point of simulating it on a computer.

I say each to his (her) own.

This flying sim business is about enjoying a hobby, period! You buy the sim, you make it what YOU want.

I am tackling the Q400 and decided to make it a learning project about aircraft systems. But I don't mind jumping into the Baron B55 and go somewhere (anywhere!) without a thorough flight plan, leaving the calculations for take-off run distance, or using any tables for that matter.

My buddy who's a First Officer for the 777 at Cathay Pacific dreads the sim! It is a chore! He has to pass this stressful test every 6 months!

As serious as this hobby as evolved into, most of us ARE NOT REAL PILOTS!

HAVE FUN learning, flying or enjoying the scenery! It's more fun for me than killing zombies...

brucets ... obviously like myself you have concluded life's too short to get hung up on trying to disappear up the virtual exhaust of one's virtual aircraft in the search for true fidelity ... if you'll permit me while I'm in 'debunking mode' to make another observation re FS ... namely that were it possible to convert pointless speculation into rocket fuel then over the years this and the other main fora could have propelled a spaceship to infinity and back(before somebody jumps down my neck and tells me that from infinity there is no returning ... I am aware of the fact ... merely indulging in a little poetic licence!) ...

Heresy to some, I know, but I enjoy flying in spot view...even landing. Love to admire my chosen aircraft, explore the scenery, gaze at the distant, haze-cloaked horizon. And I often switch planes or liveries in mid-flight.

Just skip through them or ignore them. The amount of times I've seen the same jokes about the airbus "Retard, Retard, Retard" becomes tiring very quickly. You even see simmers commenting on real aviation videos telling the real pilots what they should be doing

That doesn't surprise me. there is always someone who think they can do better than you.

Brucets, you said it. We tend to forget that what we have started off as a game, &, like a car, we tuned it up to suit whatever & wherever out imagination takes us. Me, my enjoyment is in the 'lows 'n slows', early flight & the Golden Age, 1940's etc. Also, depending on my mood, I also drive cars, sail boats, even drive a train or two. And there's Space, the final Frontier. I'm using 2x versions of FS9 as well as P3D. That's more or less my kind of fun. Tubeliners & modern jets? Not for me, but, different strokes etc.

I really support the freeware guys that make our hobby what is is, & there are some very different stuff out there. They need as much encouragement we can give them. They are actually the cornerstone of our hobby, doing stuff for no reward, except when we take the time and effort to say thanks.

I've been a member here for a few years now and I have to say this is one of the tamest forums on the net.

Rarely do I see a troll on here looking for an argument. As far as comments, ignore 'em, unless they're helpful.

It's all been said here (and these comments are spot on IMHO) :-

I'm sure that's not how the majority of FS enthusiasts feel.

Don't let a few bad apples spoil the bushel. B)

Choosing PMDG as you have draws you into a group of like-minded people who take their simming very seriously so you either buy into that or just ignore it so its not a big deal IMO, just keep  doing what your doing now and enjoy it.

It has little to do with this community and everything to do with youtube.  I don't think it's possible to find a video on Youtube that doesn't have at least one inane, juvenile comment.

.......in short, just ignore 'em and have fun.

Out of interest, why would this peeve you?   It's just how some people like to do it.  I guess they're enjoying the complexity of the automation.   I mean I don't like that sort of automated flying either, but I fail to understand why it would peeve you that some people do.     It's like getting peeved at people who fly tubeliners, just because I might prefer to fly GA.    Why on Earth would other people's enjoyment of the hobby irritate you so much.  This is the basis of the intolerence we see in the hobby IMHO.          Just live and let live!

Best way to approach YouTube comments is to respond to those with genuine interest.

But don't let comments or dislikes bother you ... I have over 400,000 views (I don't monetize any of my videos nor have any interest in even trying to make an few dollars from YouTube) and I get comments across the board from insightful to obvious trolling.

I think the funnest comment I had on one of my YouTube videos was that P3D caused his PC's Power Supply to fail ... I had fun with that one.  I have people that subscribe to my channel just because they want to dislike any video I post in the future.  It's sad reflection of some people's lives, but fortunately most people are genuine.  Ignore the jibber jabber or if you like jibber jabber enjoy some of crazy comments and have fun with them.

Keep sharing whatever it is you want to share ... I do ... heck some of my videos have been used to solve problems and even picked up by nVidia to identify a problem.

Life's too short, just do it.

Cheers, Rob.

It's just my personal obsession, but I'm a stickler  for matching the correct livery to the route. This is why I have not used my wonderful T7 much. Flights are too long. In self judgment sometimes we are so obsessed with simulating reality we forget we live in reality. This could be to the detriment  of our lives and relationships and FS could become another source of stress in our lives instead of what it should be.  It could be turned into an obsessive addiction  This goes back to a previous thread of a day ago about FS and health.

More than not, I'd let my two axis auto-pilot fly the altitude portions, of my long cross countries in my Van's RV6 (the real life one).  Most other pilots who fly these models of planes, will do the same, if they have an AP.  This AP could hold altitude much better than myself, and probably much better than any human, unless they paid particular attention to altitude management.  +/- 10' altitude is good, and that AP could do it!  I found that I was much more able to enjoy scenery, and check out distant landmarks, satellite weather,  compare with sectional maps, etc, than when so much attention is paid to hand flying.  Hand flying long distance can get awful boring.  Note: my two axis AP could separate roll and pitch. Some won't.

Guys, it's a hobby, for goodness sake, yes, an obsession for some that consider themselves oracle's and look down on us that do not fly/play with what they consider is the only thing worthwhile. We are supposed to be one big happy family, but, sometimes, it seems like a flaming war.
