NickN now gives advise on tuning P3D

Featured Replies

If cloud shadows are turned OFF it means fleecing P3D its best new feature.

If one does that for the sake of having MAX autogen settings, it is not a wise decision, to say the least.

With Nick's settings (and HDR turned off) you have a kind of slightly different FSX (with the known SDK-2002 made scenery compatibility problems).

The FPS-limiter at 60 is plane wrong, in the best case it should be 58-59 to take the place of an average 60Hz Vsync.

So don't use his settings then! The most you can fairly say is they don't work for you with your particular setup and wants. You can't in fairness say he's plain wrong and that's just it. In fact the evidence would suggest that in a lot of cases he is actually right for a lot of people with their particular setups and wants which evidently makes your and others assertions that he is plain wrong, logically wrong.

Ironically I have recently set my water to the minimum setting in P3D, because it looks rubbish with the textures active. It actually looks better as a smooth glass sheet!!

we just have to disagree on this ,not end of the world.if people agreed on everything the world would be a boring place.

I'm having a great time with p3d,and that is also down to me spending an absolute fortune on hardware.all to fly around a pretend world in a pretend airplane.

so i wish you all the best

Whilst I agree with many of your comments, unfortunately I do not see any of the "amazing and beautiful" water features in P3D (apart from the animated ripples at low level with water set to ULTRA). I use Rex Essentials Plus SP3 (which is supposed to make the water look a lot better), but the texture sheet is dull and completely static above a thousand feet. Totally lifeless. I really wish I could solve this problem, because it is annoying the hell out of me. The REX Sparkling texture set that I used in FSX DX9 mode (until I switched to P3D last August) was light years ahead in terms of quality and realism :(

Hi Christopher,

I made a short video to show the default water as I currently see it on my system:

I think it's actually quite good.

Cheers,

Under 1000 feet or so with high settings, the P3D water is really great. Above 1000ft you can use REX to generate some wave action that makes it look pretty good.

Just for kicks - using you favorite weather program (mine is ASN) locate some place over water that has extremely high winds - or you can manually set the parameters. Now, fly under 1000 feet over the water and watch the wave movement with huge whitecaps etc. Looks like a Disney movie of a stormy sea.

I followed his settings but finally I ended up using NI since I didn't like the way it look....no mayor FPS impact here anyway ..and look really good...and ...I didnt turn off HDR...no way

Unfortunately, that REX generated "wave action" above 1000 feet does not work on my PC. It also didn't work on my old PC when using FSX in DX10 mode. I really don't understand why I am not experiencing what others claim to see.

If it's any consolation Christopher I can't see any of this "wave action" or white caps either. Wish I hadn't bothered buying REX4 now.

you have to have bathymetry active

Not sure if it was or wasn't when I tried to set it up to show waves. Shall try again tonight thanks for the tip!

Make sure that the coral textures from REX are not the ones with the burned in waves pattern.

Using these in DX10 and possibly P3D stops the directional waves from showing.

And you will also need the mesh settings turned up to the highest setting 1Mtr ?

Which REX4 water texture would you recommend for the best "wave action" ?

EDIT: Sorry gone TOTALLY off topic here will start a new thread!

I have just tested switching Bathymetry on and off, and it doesn't make any difference whatsoever. The water textures look dead and lifeless everywhere apart from directly facing the Sun (and even then the effect is nowhere near as good as the lovely REX Sparkling texture set in FSX DX9 mode).

I am sticking with my sheet of glass for now, because it hurts my eyes a damn sight less than those awful textures.

 try this

enable bathymetry, water to ultra, get the floatplane and land on the sea, set the wx to stormy, watch the seas swell

That happens without bathemetry enabled also. It has little to no effect on the surface action and gives a big performance hit.

If your settings are correct and you are below 1000ft you will see that action. Above 1000ft needs help - the REX product is ok but still not where it should be.
