A Disaster!

Just opened FSX and was invited to update my Coutl Engine and Add-On Manager for my FSDT and FB products.

Did this exactly as instructed and now FSX simply will not launch. I get the opening splash screen with the FSX logo but it shuts itself down and disappears from my screen.

What on earth has happened and does anyone have any ideas how I can recover this?

Thank you

I would delete the program, and then download the entire again from the website...that should clear things up.

Same thing just happened here.

Deleted the program as directed. rebooted. Problem has not gone away.

no FSX now at all.

Download and install the latest Standalone Addon Manager.  Once you get to FSX loaded, then click on Addon Manager and then Couatl products and then restart Couatl.  For some reason I have found that the updates like this do not work.  Maybe it is because you were unable to select Run as Administrator?

If you deleted the FSDT product, you will need to disable it in the dll.xml.  FSDT usually puts a backup dll.xml before installing (xyz product).  You can also move the dll.xml to a temporary folder and restart fsx and it should restart but you will not have any menu items as the dll.xml did not load.  But it is a good check to see if there is something else, maybe something in your fsx.cfg, that is stopping the loading.

I'm not sure what you mean by update your couatl engine and Addon Manager.  Was it to update the product or was it the fact that you updated hardware and the program asked if you wanted to reactivate your product.  I have to reactivate all of my airports when I install a new driver (the latest was the Intel Chipset Device Driver).  I think I had to do it when I modified my BIOS settings too.  I just click Yes every time I was prompted and had no problems.  It did it for all of my FSDT and FlightBeam Products (I have them all).  I just started up FSX and was not given an option to update couatl or the Addon Manager.  It's strange that it was for some and not for all.

Ok, I didn't understand everything you said, but first I renamed fsx.cfg and tried to start fsx with no luck. Then I renamed dll.xml to something else and fsx did start up with no menus as you suggested.

Now what?

Thanks.

You can see that the dll.xml is the problem.  It is trying to load the FSDT products as there is an entry in the dll.xml.  It cannot as you deleted the product(s).  FSX cannot load.  So, in your case, the best solution would be to rename the dll.xml back to its original name.  Then download a FSDT product and install it.  If you have more than one FSDT product, do not reinstall those.  Just one FSDT product.  Once installed, restart FSX and FSX will now load up properly.

Thank you Sesquashtoo and Jim for your kind help.

I did delete Add On Manager and Coutl, then I downloaded again and installed. Great news is that I can now get back in to FSX but sadly the buildings at all my FSDT and FB airports have vanished. KDEN has also vanished from the list in Add On Manager!

Restarting Coutl from the FSX menu didn't work.

That darn Couatl program was the worst thing that ever happened to flightsim.  It has caused more headaches for people than I care to remember.

Yep, I ditched QW 757 just because of it. Sad but true.

Current system: ASUS PRIME Z690-P D4, Intel 12900k, 32GB RAM @ 3600mhz, Zotac RTX 3090 Trinity, M2 SSD, Oculus Quest 2.

Apparently its what allows them to create such amazingly detailed scenery although its doomed the DEV to a lifetime of excessive support as his forums are swamped with user issues.

To the OP you might also try running the Couatl.exe as admin. Also did you post on the FSDT forum? The DEV can be a bit cranky at times but he will resolve your problem 100%

ZORAN

In the past I've had to also reinstall their airports when this has happened.

Was the only way I could get the scenery to show correctly.

Really, you can speak for the entire user base of FSDT and Flightbeam? A problem that effects maybe 5% of the user base and from the solved support issues usually comes down to user error, antivirus, or other programs interfering with it.

Any software can have problems with the vast amounts of user operating systems, configuratios, antivirus program, user knowledge, etc.

The original poster could probably solve his issue quicker by going to the appropriate forum, which in this case would be the FSDT forum.

If couatl was really the evil module some users make it out to be and caused issues for that vast user base, FSDT and Flightbeam would have either been out of business years ago or would be using a different system by now. It may appear by their forum that everyone has issue with it, but that's only because it's a support forum, which means you go there when you have an issue, not to say how great something is, and if you look at the success rate of the topics where people have issues, most of the time FSDT is able to solve them.

Yep.

Would it make you feel better if I said that the Couatl module was the best thing since sliced bread?

I'm not going to argue with you because, quite frankly, I couldn't care less...
