Indepth comparison between P3D V2.5 and V3

Featured Replies

That was a very good comparison.

I personally LOVE the new Prepar3d. I bought it prematurely because of what I have been reading on the forums. But let me say that I can see the difference immediately.

Here's my example, being a New Yorker, KEWR,KJFK,KLGA is where I fly out of a lot. In FSX:SE, FSX DX10/9, P3D.2.XX I was averaging about 15 FPS in the NGX with KEWR Drzweicki and NYC X. A notorious VAS hog in the community, needless to say it was my test to see if P3D.3.0 had improved or not.

So I installed all my sceneries to see if compatibility was any issues, found out everything except Global installed.

Aircraft everything I regularly use, AXE, NGX, CS 757/767.

Sceneries

Tropical Sim MDST

LatinVFR TJSJ

Mexico City Xtreme

KMCO

KMIA

FSDT ALL

Flight Beam KDEN/KIAD

Drzweicki New York Airports / NYC X

Flytampa KBOS

Imaginesim KAUS/KCLT

After installing all of them I went to every airport and the NGX was averaging 30 FPS compared to AVG of 20 FPS before on the same settings.

The real test came when I flew the NGX around the New York City skyline with NYCX while FSDT KJFK and Drzwk KEWR as well.

Prepared 3.0 performed like a champ 24FPS a at the ground on both airports, 27 flying 1500FT MSL around the New York Corridor AND NO VAS CRASH.

Before it on all the other variations of the sim it would have crashed 5 minutes into the flight in the corridor.

So tip of the hat to LM for this great improvement.

That is an excellent video.   I love the avatar mode.    I freshly installed windows 7 yesterday and will be installing V3 tonight.   Looking forward to all of it.

Is it recommended to uninstall 2.5 and it's add-ons before installing V3?  I can see running two versions of P3D might cause problems when installing.

No need at all. They are completely separated. You might as well ask if you can install P3D and Photoshop on one computer.  You only have to take care with add ons: make sure they are being installed in the right version.

If you completely want to switch to v3 then it might be a good idea to uninstall 2.5. I myself installed v3 on the same PC as where 2.5 is on for testing purposes and because I want to keep on flying while waiting for v3 compatible add ons. Once my favorite add ons are compatible, I will remove 2.5 (probably by wiping everything and reinstalling Windows 10 and P3D v3 completely).

Thanks Jeroen, I think i'll do the same.

good to know!

Let me guess.... you want 64bit.

I'm toying with the idea of switching over to P3D from FSX. I have OOM problems with FSX when I use the 777 to the point where I don't even fly the plane anymore. Is the improvement worth switching over from FSX knowing that I will have to repurchase a number of planes etc?

The first reports certainly seem to say so. Do you use specific scenery addons? If you want to be absolutely sure, you might want to wait a while until more people who have the 777 will report how everything works with various addons that will have been made officially compatible by then. But so far things look very good.

I would recommend you switch as V3 has REALLY improved memory management and performance.

As an example I flew the 777 from FSDT KLAX to FSDT CYVR with very dense scenery settings and 4096 textures.  No OOM.  Granted it was default ground textures but my performance was really surprising considering the age of my system.

Try it for 60 days and see if you like it,  if not no harm no foul.  This version has finally made me a true believer in LM and P3D.

Only problem is that yes, P3D has a 60 days refund policy but PMDG's 777 doesn't. So you can only try that plane if you buy it. All over again. But I do think that it's worth the shot.  Or red259 maybe could create a scenario in FSX that gives him an OOM without a PMDG plane and then try the same in P3D v3.

BTW About those default ground textures: it seems everyone is thinking textures like FTX Global will increase VAS but afaik they don't: the only look better but have the exact same size etc. When it comes to scenery outside of airports it's add ons like Vector that will increase VAS a lot.

Indeed it is a good idea to uninstall v2.5 only then when v3 is running good with your Addons.

As a cockpitbuilder I have so e headache :

In v2.5 I have the Ifly 737 icw my home cockpit and everything is working perfectly.

For v3 I have installed Project Magenta ( Ifly doesn't work ) and will need several days/weeks to get all my hardware working with it.

I now need a Distortion Fix for the fisheye effect from NVSurround....

This would be very cool if some attention was given to this, not sure what if anything can be done.

I remember PMDG said the purchase price for P3D V2.x was going to be a free upgrade to 64-bit P3D (should that ever occur).  Did I understand you to say PMDG T7 license for 2.x won't run on 3.x, so you must repurchase?
