AS 16 + ASCA First Impressions

Featured Replies

Thanks maybe it didnt take before getting out of sim so you are saying it has to be at max all the time not to get this message that seems odd to me ? thank you

Neither FSX nor P3D is capable of reliably displaying solid overcast conditions unless this setting is at "maximum", no matter what weather engine is being used. This even applies to using the default weather generator built into the sim.

It has always been this way - AS16 is apparently the first weather engine to check this in-sim config setting and provide an advisory if it is not set to maximum.

My gosh...   Very expensive. Even with the discount for owning ASN. Prohibitively expensive to run both FSX and P3D.   The screenshots I've seen so far look pretty darn good and I'm very sure that

For those wondering there is a 7 day trial period before buying to answer those questions. I plan on taking advantage of that after work.   You cannot try ASCA but you can at least test drive the w

Thanks Jim did not know that good info

At simmarket there is a comment that VAS consumption is greatly increased with the new AS2016/ASCA combo when dynamically loading the textures.

I will also wait until REX brings out Skyforce, which brings more than 3000 textures based on real world templates.

The pics and vids I have seen with ASCA did not look convincing at all. It should always be the goal to present the real world as close as possible.

AS2016 as weather engine must be superior to ASN what I read. Exciting times!

Regards,

Chris

I haven't noticed this and I did try and push things a bit a EKCH with lots of detail/cloud - VAS was fine.

That said, your comment about not being convinced about ASCA is correct and unfortunately what I am experiencing - the textures just simply aren't as good as REX's and unlikely to be once Skyforce comes out. Overcast is fine but that's mainly a mass of one texture or the same textures - it's the individual clouds which look strange and I can't quite decide what it is about them either - I put soft clouds back in and it was better again. Maybe there will be some updates. AS16 is a great weather program, ASCA textures are not quite there yet. I really hope that 3rd party (REX) textures can be dynamically injected or I'll be a bit pretty disappointed about ASCA to be honest.

My case: Not verified. I usually have 1.2 to 1.7GB free when i takeoff in complex sceneries with addons such as PMDG or Aerosoft. An i have a LOT of sceneries installed, plus mesh, vector, landclass, etc.

These go up and down during flight and i usually land, also in complex airports, with no less than 800 to 1.4GB of VAS free.

Thanks for all the feedback...Does anyone know if the hard lines we see with clouds etc around mountains still exist?

I get the same message but am running FSX Steam.  I have all cloud settings set to max, under cloud options. There is no mention of cloud density setting. Am I missing something?

During testing I concentrated on VAS usage and saw no noticeable increase at all using AS16/ASCA. Of course if you use only 4096 textures, you will get an increase as compared to 1024.

Yes, that is still an issue that is inherent with the sim.  There is a cloud offset that you can adjust in the AS16 Options screen for Prepar3D which may minimize the intersecting lines.

In the FSX Steam Settings\Weather be sure to set Cloud detail to "Detailed clouds" and "Cloud Coverage Density" to "Maximum."

Using FSX .Thanks for reply

Can anyone tell me if any of ASCA cloud textures compare to REX soft clouds. I really like REX soft clouds, but like the idea of the clouds changing as the weather changes. My understanding is you have to use their cloud textures. Thanks

AS16 is a big improvement to ASN! ASCA Textures are far from soft clouds but necessary for dynamic weahter and good looking overcast. But i am sure the HIFI team are working on it!

Beware to fly through thunderstorms! It is not funny =@

Big improvement over ASN on how your aircraft is affected by weather, overcast is excellent with ASCA and the textures I find a improvement over REX4.... atleast on my system. Frames are good no difference on my system ([email protected] gtx670)
