Extremely bad framerates on a high-end gaming desktop

Featured Replies

I noticed today during a VATSIM flight that, especially on landing, my framerates were absolutely pathetic for a computer like mine (I was getting 9-15FPS on short final!!!). I don't know why; I thought I tweaked my cfg file pretty well. I have FTX Global and Global Vector installed and several other payware addons... Don't think it's that. I dunno, what do you guys think?

MY SYSTEM SPECS:

Intel i7-7700k overclocked to 4.6GHz, cooled by a Corsair Hydro H55 Water Cooler

16GB of DDR4-2400 RAM (With XMP enabled)

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti (All drivers up to date)

1TB Seagate HDD

And here's my FSX.cfg settings:

You could run FSX on a server cluster and it would still bog down if you load it up with too much junk.

The hard drive is a definite bottle neck. Get a SSD.

And since this subject has been discussed to death over the past 10+ years, search for similar topics to find some tips on improving performance.

My add-ons from my FS9/FSX days

You've got five instances of [DISPLAY.Device.NVIDIA GeForce GTX ...] in your cfg file which can potentially cause problems. If you only use one monitor, make a copy of FSX.cfg and then edit the original and remove all of the entries which don't apply, leaving just the one that does. It may be better, after having copied the original FSX.cfg to just delete it and let FSX create a new one without the tweaks to establish a good baseline.

Whilst having FSX on an SSD will definitely improve initial loading times (and will significantly speed up Windows), it will make little difference to performance in flight. Make sure that you regularly defrag your HDD to maintain best system performance.

Perhaps this is part of the problem.  I take it that when you installed FSX you had a GTX 780 video card and you have now upgraded to a GTX 1050 Ti.  I went through some issues when I upgraded from an 8800GT OC to a 560Ti SOC.  You should probably delete your FSX.cfg file and let FSX build a new file that reflects your current hardware.  Plus, you have multiple display device entries in the cfg file.

Performance killer.  Try setting water to 2x low.

My computer: ABS Gladiator Gaming PC featuring an Intel 10700F CPU, EVGA CLC-240 AIO cooler (dead fans replaced with Noctua fans), Asus Tuf Gaming B460M Plus motherboard, 16GB DDR4-3000 RAM, 1 TB NVMe SSD, EVGA RTX3070 FTW3 video card, dead EVGA 750 watt power supply replaced with Antec 900 watt PSU.

I am running a 7700k/GTX970 rig I have just built, so I am not overclocked yet to allow my thermal paste to settle in. Having said that, when I do get around to OC'ing I will not be changing anything that I have right now on a stock speed build which includes an almost vanilla FSX config.

i notice on your FSX config that you have been using a fair amount of the old tweaks that I personally tried over the years and have since forgotten. A lot of them just don't work.

just a couple of observations in addition to the already mentioned duplication in your Display Devise section:

Bufferpools]
BP=0
Poolsize=100000  if your BP=0, why are you specifying a poolsize? I do not use a "Bufferpools" entry at all, butt if you want it you need to change that BP=0 to BP=1

ForceFullScreenVSync=1
ForceWindowedVSync=1  Which display mode do you use in your sim? My advice for what it is worth, get Nvidia Inspector, use the half refresh rate setting in Inspector, do not set frame rate limit inside inspector and set FPS target in FSX to "31FPS" and with that rig you should have as smooth as smooth is possible when it comes to FSX. IMHO if you are running a lot of high end scenery, AI and A/C addons in FSX, steady 60FPS is pie in the sky.

Save your present config then delete it, only include the required changes (uiautomationcore for example) and one of the very few changes I personally have made to my config is TEXTURE_MAX_LOAD=4096 to 2048. Give it a try and if it doesn't work, stick your old config back in.

just my two cents.

Edit: Forgot to mention I am on FSX SE, but there is no magic bullet from Dovetail, so no difference as far as I'm concerned.

Yes, I originally had a GTX 780 and I upgraded to a 1050ti. I'll delete my current cfg file and rebuild a new one. I'll also set water to 2x low.

Also try setting Freeway traffic to zero.  In urban areas this can tax your system.

Lastly what airport were you flying into?  Some addon airports are fps killers.

Also, what are your Vector settings?  That's a know FPS killa; in fact, I bet it's the primary culprit of your FPS drop.  Make sure you uncheck ALL tertiary options...

I don't know what you mean by "tertiary" settings but here's a screenshot of my Vector configuration.

In the second column it says Tertiary Roads with a check box by it and 3 options under it for underplays, bridges and tunnel exits. Uncheck all 4 which are now checked in the screen shot and test again.
