What to Expect in 2018 for P3D

They have a team working on that as well.  But it's thousands upon thousands of textures, so this takes quite a while to do.

That's good to hear, I thought it had been forgotten about.

Captn Sim 757

With all due respect, Captain Sim products are at the bottom of my list.  I wasted close to a hundred bucks on their half baked products in FSX and had completely written them off.  Frankly for me, I am not expecting big moves from anyone in 2018 aside from already announced projects: PMDG J41, PMDG 747-8i, and hopefully MilViz will complete their Beechcraft 350i (it has been now more than three years?).  P3Dv4 still has growing pain (LM please fix your dynamic lights feature), and there are still a lot of adjustments.  I will see the releases when they are here.  Personally I am not looking forward to anything new, got plenty right now to work on, especially after the sales between Black Friday and New Year.

My wishes for 2018 (P3D):

  1. Sharp photoreal textures.
  2. Dynamic lights without heavy performance impact.
  3. Cloud shadows that doesn't disappear because of POV.

These generic improvements will make flying (particularly VFR) more realistic and many airplanes more usable (DL performance).

Cheers,

I am anxious to see what Majestic comes out with. Their Q 400 is awesome.

You can see videos of the DashQ training version while is being tested if you want, this also allows you to ask questions to the beta testers while they are streaming.

I am not sure when the beta tests will start for this airplane or when they will be streamed but you can follow OVPA Facebook page for more information or you can ask Dave Hoges @DaveCT2003 to send you newsletters / information about when they will be doing the live streaming beta tests videos to keep you in the loop.

Best Regards

I agree but REX is notoriously slow with updates.

It may seem that way, however their products are the most texture intensive products in flight sim, and textures require the most time to create. The burning time alone is staggering.

Besides, the next version is not an update, but an entirely new version.

REX Worldwide Airports HD is not identical, but similar to Zinertek HD Airport Graphics. The last one has been P3D4 compatible for quite some time and I am using it while REX has been unable to update their product until today.

Michael, I have both products, and there is a world if difference between them, not just in the type of textures but the quality - take a look for yourself. Now the textures being worked on for the next REX version are even better as each texture is being redone.

I'm not sticking up for REX, I disagree with so many things they do. But in this regard I'm just trying to provide the most accurate information.

I don't see how textures are related to 64 bit? Orbx FTX Global was working from day one in P3Dv4 and it conists solely of textures. And I am pretty sure, they didn't have to change anything. It is just a "simple" texture replacement. What am I missing?

No simple as that, a lot things changed with PD3V4, no just it became 64bits but lots of particle draw techniques changed, also the way the lighting is presented changed, the way effects are drawn and you have dynamic lighting materials, etc. After all there is a reason why you cannot use FS9 AI planes under P3DV4 without converting the textures first and if you don't it will cause P3DV4 CTD.

So I imagine that the textures need to be updated, also objects with new materials to react properly under the new environment, otherwise users will get weird results and then complain that the product is horrendous.

Actually I had REX HD Airports installed under P3d4 and it worked fine with only a few exceptions, which were taxiway and runway textures. And even then those specific textures worked correctly most of time.

Keep in mind that LM changed the way that materials were processed for those surfaces when going from V3 to V4. The change was added to allow for more flexiblity in seasonal textures. And then there is the issue with textures that don't have normal maps and problems created by dynamic lighting.

REX is very methodical in their development process but the products are usually worth the wait.

Well, I was rather hoping that France VFR would have had a Christmas 2017 sale, so my hope is that they will think again in January 2018

For me P3D is pretty much a tube-liner sim at this point. Not sure there is a need to look at beyond XP11 for VFR/GA with the constant improvements and new freeware/payware releases the platform is getting. I hope that AeroFly FS2 will catch up eventually, though!

I own both products as well with the REX product sittíng idle on my HD for months now. Unfortunately I bought it close to the end of the Prepar3d3 life cycle and didn't see that much difference. Anyway, I'll certainly give it a another chance when they will release it for Prepar3d4.

Kind regards, Michael

I strongly disagree. I only fly GA - under Prepar3d4 and occasionally AeroflyFS2. And yes, I own XP11 (and FSW) as well.

No more contributions from me on the matter, but I felt I had to state this once.
