New MS Flight Sim shown at E3

Something that many people might have missed: on the XBox YT channel, MSFS trailer is the most watched one (2.8M views) among all E3 videos, preceding even the new Halo trailer. So much for the "We're a niche of a niche!" myth. ☺️

Sorry, my bad, I have watched it like 2 million times 🙂 I'm screwing up the numbers, my bad once again 🙂

Developer Forums are basically only good for support. Truly objective commentary just won’t ever happen there

Mild disagreement here. It depends on the developer. I've been in game developer forums where anything goes except profanity and outright trolling, where there are users venting about how the game is missing this or that feature, what on earth were the devs thinking, this other game does X so much better, and so on. And the devs or their designated reps just don't care. They participate anyway and let it all roll off their backs. The CA/Total War and Amplitude forums are like that.

Other dev forums are much more tightly restricted for negative comments. Or you might even get the lead developer/CEO dropping in and flaming a user (Stardock, although that a while ago, don't know what it's like now).

Developer forums come in all flavors. I don't know what the Microsoft/Xbox forums are like now, or what their history has been. Never been on there.

@Paraffin Yes, I agree.  There are exceptions to every rule

I would simply posit that it is more likely than unlikely for a developer forum to be generally moderated in a way to favor their interests.

Is that a fair characterization to you?

Alright Xbox community when Microsoft Flight Simulator is released for Xbox if all 63 million of you would pay for the Xbox Gaming Pass, or pay for it individually, however that is gonna work. I would prefer you buy a subscription to give Microsoft steady income, and you can play other Xbox games. But just make sure you play Microsoft Flight Simulator, and multiplayer on Xbox will hopefully be awesome, as well as on PC. Pretend that it is Combat Flight Simulator if you must, and make gun sounds if need be, like you are shooting at each other. Just have FUN and give them money to help develop the PC version. And us PC user's of Microsoft Flight Simulator, or some of us, will buy it. But we don't have the 63 million numbers so help a brother and sister out 🙂

I am counting on all you under 40 gamer's 🙂

BTW, since it WILL be Microsoft Flight Simulator on Xbox too. Will there ever be an area on Avsim for them? Let the screaming begin 🙂 Oh no , now we have Xbox users on here, the world is gonna end 🙂

And I also forgot. Please Microsoft down the road make a Microsoft Flight Simulator App tablet's and phones, and I WILL buy a yearly subscription to get the entire world like Infinite Flight, and I will buy DLC aircraft for it too.

Man, just think Microsoft Flight Simulator on PC, Xbox, and maybe tablets and cell phones. That would be awesome.

Sorry I am getting ahead of myself. Just give it to us on PC first, sorry, got carried away! Microsoft maintain FOCUS on PC first 🙂 Then the 63 million Xbox users, then tablets and phones.

Scene:

Person in doctor's office waiting room ( sometimes an hour or two wait ) with tablet and or phone or both.

They find a comfortable spot to sit away from people.

They open bag or backpack.

Out comes a tiny joystick and throttle, think HOTAS ( they do make one I think )

Put in their earbuds.

And fly while waiting to be called!

The future I say, the future. I guess I missed a VR headset 🙂

Well I tzhink this might work. The mission approach of FSW and combat missions. Such things might work in a subscription model but I don't expect systems like A2A and PMDG under a subscription model.

That’s great Rob, and I’m sure you do a great job, but that is just subjectively deciding what you think should be there.  Your opinions are likely different than mine or anyone else’s for that matter.

That’s exactly the control, moderation & curation subjectivity I don’t want for developers in terms of reviews of their products, especially in the FS space, which has had a bit of a checkered history and some fairly heavy handed developers at times.

All of that is fine for their own forum/platform, of course.  There one knows what to expect.

It’s true that you can find game developer forums that are moderated with a very light touch. It’s also true (feel free to point out the examples that prove me wrong!) that flightsim developer forums are just not like that. In my experience moderation ranges from deeply wary to totalitarian. And genuinely totalitarian, in the sense that a long history of coming down hard on dissent, on the one hand, and granting perks for loyalty, on the other, produces a system in which many or even most forumgoers happily toe the party line and themselves act to silence discordant voices. Frankly, I find it unnerving.

Truth be told, even on Avsim some of that inherent deference to developers is baked in. How often have we seen a mod step in with “developer bashing will not be tolerated”?

And maybe all of that is fine. But if so, that only makes the case for a place you can get the unvarnished takes (yes, malicious ones too) even stronger.

James

Why are we discussing site moderation? That's completely off topic.

Thank you.

Because after 10 days and (currently) 73 pages, there's nothing else to discuss without further information from Microsoft.

That won't stop us trying though!

It all stems from discussion about the new sim (the general topic of this thread) possibly having a native AddOn store and how the ratings might be done and concerns around that all being under the thumb of MS and the pros/cons of that.

This is isn’t really off topic (the topic is really broad here), it’s just a branch we got to by going deeper on some aspects of the topic.

Not all comments by page 73 will immediately and directly address that very first post, 1800 posts and 90,000 views ago.

Certainly happy to branch the potential add-on store discussion out though if you’d prefer.  It is a topic of great interest on both sides of the debate it would seem.
