What kind of PC do I need for study level simulation and realism?

Featured Replies

Hello everyone!

I am shopping to invest in a desktop computer suitable for flying with intense addons, such as:

orbx (global all the way to regions like Southern California)

fsdt, Flight beam, Taxi2Gate, flytampa, etc airports

pmdg (all), aerosoft (professional a320), Captain sim 787/757 III, TFDi 717

With addons like these, what pc configurations do you all recommend? (What processer, graphics card, etc)

I want at least 30 FPS with considerably high settings.

What have you got at the moment?

Captainsim 757 is very hard on frames from what I've heard. Even new systems are having problems with it.

If you get 30 fps with PMDG777 then I would use this as your performance basline.

Hi,

i think it depends on your display resolution most. For HD an I5 and a NVIDIA 2060 should be enough. For 4k you should invest in the latest I7 and an NVIDIA 2080Ti.

For HD even a 1660TI is enough. Using  the 20xx line in Full HD is an overpriced gimmick for people who think that raytraycing is the word not allowed. They are definately more suited for 4K gaming.

There we have the problem. 30FPS with considerably high settings is easily possible to reach, the question is, what do you accept as considerably high settings?

Your above question can only be answered if you define a budget you will spend. Without this, you will get so many different suggestions that you will be lost...

Reason: you can get acceptable results in P3D with a 1500$ build and you can put the settings as such that even a 10'000$ rig will not provide your 30FPS target frame rate...

Believe me, if you are keen in using high quality antialiasing modes, even on FullHD a 1660Ti is not sufficient. As I wrote above, depending on your settings, you can get 99% load even on a 2080Ti and acceptable frame rates even on a 1050Ti. General statements are totally wrong for a simulator such as P3D...

As far as flight simulation is concerned, you need to get the most powerful system that you can afford. It is not as simple as stating "at least 30fps with considerably high settings". There are so many variables at play, that providing accurate information of this kind is like asking someone to walk across a minefield with a blindfold on.

+1 Follow this advice and you will have no regrets. I did 20 months ago. I7 and 1080ti and still happy with p3d.. 😃

+1 specially if you don’t want to be bothered for several years.

I heavily disagree.

We are at a point where even the most powerful system you can buy is not going to fix certain P3D problems, for example even on my i5 I get 50fps on high in FC5 and 33% cpu and this is while flying the CS757 at 20-25 fps at the same time in another window. P3D states the minimum requirements but don't state the maximum, it's like trying to use a Ferrari to do mud running, I'm quite sure that current P3D code was not meant to run 4K add-ons maxed out on widescreen 4K monitors, if they would update the code you would easily get high frames fully loaded even on a mid system. I don't think it's fair to say that the CS757 is heavy on frames, but that's my opinion.

I wouldn't even consider a processor that isn't able to push out 4.5GHz or more, and for that you'd be best to ensure a good water cooler. I would also go with an i7 and I have a very good reason for suggesting this.  For the graphics card, an NVIDIA 2080 or NVIDIA 2080ti.

Best wishes.

Wow you guys are fast at responding, I appreciate this!

I currently use a lower end laptop for flight simming. With any major airport scenery addon (aerosoft Heathrow, for example) in the pmdg 777, I’m lookign at about 12fps on average.

So far, i have confidence in selecting this desktop from Dell:

https://www.dell.com/en-us/shop/dell-desktop-computers/inspiron-gaming-desktop/spd/inspiron-5680-gaming-desktop/ndblutcf107s

I know there are those who would rather build a PC, but I don’t feel confident in doing so. If I build a PC, I would at least want someone reputable to do so. Any suggestions on that as well? I’ve heard people say Fryz electronics is good with that.
