Is it now safe to apply the FTX Central update ?

Featured Replies

I am still on FTX Central 3 and have not upgraded to version 4 after reading of all the issues.  Have these been worked out now and its safe to upgrade?  I would like to do so in order to keep getting updates to Chaseplane.  Interested in what that latest is on this.

I've just moved to 4, had no issues...

I moved over when it was brand new and had some issues with it, but that was ironed out 5-6 months ago.

Anything I need to do ahead-of-time to prepare?  Or just let it download and go?

I moved to central about a month ago. I waited for things to calm down and was concerned because I already

had a symbolic link to large HDD. Everything went well, no problems.

I'd highly recommend using something like the Lorby-SI P3D Addon Manager to take a snapshot of all your P3D config files (or do a complete system backup) before letting Orbx/FTX Central have at your configuration...my concern was and is still that Orbx Central will scramble my well-ordered scenery hierarchy.  Preserving a place to go back to seems prudent given the spotty history of the OC rollout.

Totally agree!. Thanks to the Lorby P3D4 Addon Organizer I've been able to keep a sound scenery layering order, since to me from day one ORBX Central continues to mess with it.

To me, most people that say that everything is right with ORBX Central is probably because they have not realized they have issues with their scenery.cfg file.

There were problems when using a combination of .cfg and .xml, but that was corrected a long time ago. After that, if one was using P4AO to deactivate scenery layers, OC couldn't recognize and work with those entries, so there was a mix-up. Work-around: Activate all layers before running OC. But the dev was made aware of this and said he could change OC to recognize the hack P4AO uses, so maybe now that work-around isn't needed anymore. Haven't tested that yet.

That is how I did and do it.

Before running Central I make a Backup with AO and put it back afterwards.

Everthing xml entries and cfg entries all happy together in the layering that I want it ..

Fair point and maybe partly correct, but on the other hand is that many users that have recurring problems with ORBX Central and layering issues is because they have failed to either set their Library Insertion points at all or that they haven't set it correctly.

Of course that setting the insertion points is very important, but that's not enough. Even with correct setting of the insertion points, the truth is that ORBX Central continues to re-arrange in an incorrect way the scenery layering inside the "packs" or scenery "groups" after they are correctly inserted.

My friend Rob made the move and lived to regret it.  I don't know exactly why, but I'm staying put for now!
