Why it's so difficult to wait 3-4 weeks, while the things with add-ones settle down. Then the same gang of "early adopters" will be crying river of tears blaming developers etc.

My plan as well. I have ordered a new 2TB M2 SSD that will be P3DV5 only.

Is there any performance impact from having P3D on an external SSD drive such as your doing? I wouldn't mind installing version 5 on a external SSD drive and keeping everything on that but I'm concerned with the performance as far as scenery and texture loading, etc...

No FPS gain, but faster start-up and loading times

Faster loading helps with avoiding blurries and might make the sim smoother..

Actually, I will be adding another internal SSD not external. John at Orbx has used an external SSD successfully.

I get that add ons should be installed in a different directory from p3d, but it shouldn't matter whether they're on the same or a different drive though, right?

It is a space issue for me. I have only 260Gb left on the dedicated 1TB SSD for P3DV4. No way I could run them together which is my plan until P3DV5 has all the add-ons updated. I also have a 250 GB SSD which is used for P3DV4 scenery and it only has 45 GB left. I do not want to fill the hard drives. The M2 drives are much faster than a standard SSD. My C drive is a M2 500GB drive which is used for all non flight simulator computer tasks. I expect the 2 P3DV4 drives to become dedicated scenery drives for P3DV5 considering the size of scenery now being produced.

You are correct in that it does not matter if add-ons are on the same drive.

(Raise your hand if you have absolutely no clue what any of you are talking about)

(Raises hand!)

Hey guys, can you explain this to me like I'm an word not allowed, please? I'm going to wait for updated installers for my addons and do clean installs of everything. What is the best way? Whatchoo guys talking about with this outside the root folder stuff?

Thanks!

Hi, I'm somewhat slow. What is the simple explanation as to why?

Will we be able to have both V4 and V5 on our machines? It would be nice to have both installed and build the V5 as everything catches up while still being able to fly V4. Then once, V5 is up to speed, just uninstall V4.

Yes,  you will be able to...

Nice. Ordering a 1TB M.2 right now.

OK, so here is the recipe how to link your old V4 addon packages and scenery to V5

  1. Copy "C:\ProgramData\Lockheed Martin\Prepar3D v4\add-ons.cfg" to "C:\ProgramData\Lockheed Martin\Prepar3D v5\add-ons.cfg"
  2. Use P4AO to add a DiscoveryPath to V5, pointing to "C:\Users\...\Documents\Prepar3D v4 Add-ons"
  3. Use P4AO to import your V4 scenery.cfg as a new addon package (there is a button for that on the "Backup/Restore" tab).

That's about it.

This will not affect addons that don't have an add-on.xml, which will mostly be aircraft, shader- or texture replacements.

Best regards

Followed this process and now I am running into this issue. Seems to be the only problem so far. Any ideas I could try?

If you're using FS2Crew the flight crew program or UGCX or RAAS, please do not try manually moving our products over into P3D v5.

Please wait for the official installers.

If you try manually porting stuff into P3D v5, things will likely get messed up, causing us big support headaches!

Cheers,
