Ok. I did the test. I can add whatever number of cloud layers in the user interface but the cloud layer doesn't  get displayed. With the legacy system, I can see these layers.

That's my experience also. You can add a lot of cloud layers from the P3d5 user interface, but I've never seen more than 3 and that includes a cirrus layer.

TS is a beta implementation by LM. There is NO sdk or api for anyone to take advantage of it. It's merely a demo of what might be possible down the road. AS can take a shot at improving it but there are no guarantees , it's shooting blind. After a few flights I thought it has good potential but I disabled it and haven't looked back.

Anyone using it and expecting accurate weather depiction, at this stage, is going to be disappointed. If you like to fly around with pretty clouds and don't care when and where they show up but they are pretty - by all means enable TS.

But at this point, complaining about it will accomplish nothing, LM knows it's beta and is a work in progress. First they need to get v5 cleanedx up and then they can work on the bells and whistles.

TBH Vic, TS was the only compelling reason for me to leave v4.5 which is very stable and I dare say with ENVTEX and ENVSHADE, Activesky runnings looks really fantastic. Maybe once TS is more polished with developers having access to the API and SDK it will be worthwhile buy for sure I am staying put on v4.5.

I'm not sure I agree on the 2 cloud layers, I ran several tests today with 5 cloud layers and they "more or less" seemed to work.  What didn't work very accurately is the cloud coverage/density settings (especially cirrus).  I didn't like how visibility was being depicted at all.

Here is a quick video of 5 cloud layers with TrueSKY using the basic custom weather options, certainly has some issues but the layers seem to be there:

Cheers, Rob.

Can this also achieved with active sky ? When using as and configuring 5 layers i still see only 2 layers....

...I have 5 layers here so not sure why or how the "2 layer" limit came about?

I spent a few hours checking that out in SimConnect weather. Five layers no problem.

One limitation with True Sky is that the tops of one cloud layer cannot be set higher than the bases of the next higher layer.

If you try to do that manually, you’ll get a “please correct errors” message when you try to save the custom theme, but perhaps an external weather engine can do it. If so, it might prevent either layer (that overlap) from appearing?

If that is the case, weather engines injecting clouds into the True Sky environment would have to include sanity checking to insure that there are no overlaps.

I had weather set externally via Simconnect using FS-FlightControl with two (slightly) overlapping layers and this led to "please correct errors". Took me some time to isolate the issue. The author has modified FS-FlightControl now to avoid such setting if weather is set using it.

Kind regards, Michael

Variety of cloud rendering is lacking rather than ability to layer. If layers are too close you get flashing sunlight through them even with only two layers. Generally weather scenarios have well split out cloud types and the layers depend on the type of weather. Basically a requirement is to produce the right type of clouds in the right places without overlaps. CB anvils often overlap in altitude with upper layers.

Hi steve,

So how many layers should we set in ASP3D with TS?

Hope all is well mate

All good thanks! Hoping you are too.

Experiment with AS and TS at the moment it's all new and beta.

Yes, I’ve seen CB’s coming up out of lower cloud decks on many airline flights. That effect can be emulated with the standard cloud depiction, but apparently not in the current beta implementation of EA in P3D. I’ve read a couple of posts from users familiar with the Simul SDK for True Sky that stated the system is capable of much more variety in cloud types than what is currently available in V5, so hopefully more capabilities will be added as time goes on.

I feel like the rain/thunder is very underwhelming.  I'm running no EA with ASP3D/ASCA beta/envtex/envshade.  Anybody else?

I tried ASP3D again with the PMDG777 in P3dv4.5HF3 and had precipitation on the ND ,

Strangely i still doesnt have any in v5 /PMDG747v3 QOTSII

Hi Michael, I thought PMDG products required another update to get the weather radar working in the cockpit? Was this now fixed in the meantime??

FYI - there's a new ASP3D beta on its way based on what Damian stated today over in the HiFi forum - hopefully to fix this issue but also several CTDS being reported.
