Any Disadvantages buying MSFS from Steam?

Recommended Posts

PS if i want to link my MSFS to steam i can even though i purchased from my MS account, i have done this with some disc games in the past F1 2015 was on disc but i linked it to my steam catalogue.

Indeed you can.

The only difference between the Steam version and the Microsoft Store version seems to be how, and from where, you will install or re-install the game from.

You download with steam only the launcher. The rest, core content, will be downloaded within the launcher to a folder of your choice. It’s absolutely irrelevant which version you get.

You don't know that, though. People used to think standard and Steam DCS were the same thing, didn't turn out that way.

Even if they're the same now, you don't know that beta versions and patches will be delivered at the same time in the future. Just like ED with DCS, there's a fair bit of motivation for MS to make the non-Steam version the preferred platform over time.

All I've heard from the devs so far is that the "User experience" will be the same. Install location will be different, yes? So there's no 100% guarantee that both products will remain the same forever or even be identical at launch.

Does someone know how many Gigabytes of data we will need to download before MSFS can be installed?  The DVD version contains roughly 80 GB, so is it fair to assume that the download is as big?  In the internet, I have read that you need to download more than 100 GB.

All three version state 150GB of Disc space.

I am talking about the amount of data that we have to download before the files get decompressed/installed.

The only possible issue is if steam goes down which it has done sometimes

Haven't checked lately, but yes, Steam used to go down for me almost every nite around 7:30pm local time. Although, not for long it was still very annoying because it was after dinner just when you'd want to start playing.

Are titles purchased from steam part of the play anywhere program? With 100 titles being released next month for mobile xCloud, if mfs is released for xCloud, would steam allow for this? For me, occasionally flying around with a gamepad while away from my pc, even continuing a flight, would be fun

I look at it this way.  I have dozens of games on steam and have used it for many years.  I can count on one hand how many times I had download issues.  I have 4 games on the windows store and had massive issues downloading two of them (forza 7 and forza horizon 4)...hence my desire to use steam.

It does sound like the majority of files will actually be downloaded in sim so in the end it probably doesn’t matter much anyway, but i feel more confident with steam.

That would mean mobile play would be out for sure. Not a big deal for true simming, but glad I went ms as I want this ga vfr experience in my pocket. Thanks.

I know, but as far as I recall, Steam creates a folder named: 'steam-library' (or something) and installs all games in that folder.
I want to have my FS folder in the root. (but this is only trivial, I can live with it 😉 )

Oh ok yeah got it kinda sucks you cant do that.😞

Steam is tempting because it is just so easy. However, my main concern is when vr gets supported, will I then be going through the Steam layer as well as the WMR interface? When resources are at a premium, I want as little running as is necessary.

On the flip side, I aim to buy a new rig soon (Just waiting for 30xx and new Ryzen), and am wondering how many hoops MS will make me jump through to transfer the sim. With Steam, it would be a non-issue.

Go watch the latest Asobo livestream on Twitch. They clearly state that the Steam and Ms Store version will be the same. That is obvious once you realize the Ms controls the updates from within the sim and there is no need to synchronize content releases between the different stores.

I use the Steam DCS version and it's fine now. Yes, I lost out on one of the earlier add-ons and had to repurchase but after that it's been fine.
