would you rather have waited?

Featured Replies

I have not installed the sim yet, as I am waiting for a SSD to arrive, but based on the rather mixed bag of feedback:

We have the whole world simulated and have "early access" to it. With such a massive scale project, major bugs and glitches in this stage were to be expected. I think I can remember that at least, performance wise, FSX was no better. And indeed, it seems that for many, FS2020 runs rather smoothly, at least in terms of fps.

Question then is, would you rather have waited till its more polished?

No.

The sim will be "done" a decade from now. Let me join in on the journey.

No while there are limitations and frustrations now I am happy to be along for the ride and provide input.

Just like FSX, it's the third party contributors that will make it really shine. Though I really hope they work on the IFR, among other things. I sold my TrackIR ages ago when I stopped using p3d, so it's time to shell out money for a new one! Anyways, I think in 6 months time we'll have a pretty polished sim on our hands.

No. But I wish, all those who are complaining that MSFS is still in alpha or beta state would have waited for a year longer ...

No. I'm good with where it is.

I'm a bit surprised at the number of obvious bugs. But then see ice accumulate and the icing boots actuate and clear the ice away and I'm better.

Nope. I haven't flown P3D in a month since I got beta access. I've taken the opportunity to explore all of Africa. I'm sure I'll miss my Q400 or MD80 at some point and boot up P3D again, but for now I've been totally happy with this new experience. There's plenty to like and enjoy...

I think you should wait for a few more days. The download client is extremely buggy and very frustrating to work with. According to Steam reviews, potentially 40% of players are having issues with it.

I can't comment on the simulator itself as I still don't have access to it (you can guess why).

Not at all.

I think what we're seeing here with many complaints, is a somewhat misleading picture of things. I'm not saying there are not problems, there are. But a lot of this seems of a large proportion, merely from being the good old 'the squeaky wheel which gets the oil' scenario writ large, where you will hear loud complaints from those with issues, and nothing from the people who are happily rolling along.

That said, what has not helped, is that it's quite obvious some people in the beta gave a misleading impression with their 'it's wonderful' reports, some of which we saw on Avsim. Additionally, there've been a few people with preview copies on youtube in the past week or so, who obviously felt compelled to blow an endless stream of sunshine up Asobo and Microsoft's @rse, because they got sent a freebie preview copy and a load of cool hardware to go with it. This has led more than a few people to have somewhat unrealistic expectations, only to have those dashed when a less than perfect product ended up on their hard drive.

The more pragmatic among us, kept a lid on those expectations, and as a result, have not been disappointed, quite the contrary in fact when experiencing the positive aspects of the sim, of which there are many.

Are there things which are a bit ropey? Sure. The GUI is a bit clumsy in places, the airliners are somewhat simple affairs, some of the GA aeroplanes are not bang on the numbers in terms of flight performance, and the ATC is not a vast improvement on the default ATC in FSX and P3D, to pick some of the more apparent ones. But in spite of this, there are far and away more plus points in a sim which despite its rough edges in places, offers the prospect of something which could end up very good indeed.

Nobody will deny that it's a looker, but perhaps more importantly, it utilises the hardware of even quite modest systems to create those pretty looks, and for once, there is a version of FS coming out of the gate which can achieve great FPS on even a not very well endowed machine so long as one is prepared to accept not turning everything up to eleven. The flight modeling system, notwithstanding some default aeroplanes perhaps not making best use of it, appears robust and significantly improves on everything else before it. And it takes the 'all in one place' market concept forward in a sensible manner, without monopolising the buyer's choices.

Beyond all this, I think a good many of the complaints are just down to a lack of familiarity with the options, shortcuts and GUI, or simply being a bit Luddite in terms of it being new and different from the traditional FS control system.

There's room for improvement for sure, but there's cause for celebration too so long as one doesn't focus on expecting it to be the panacea some people rather unrealistically supposed it would be.

And some people still would moan that the petrol tank was not full, if you gave them a Rolls Royce. This isn't quite a Rolls Royce yet, but it's still a hell of a ride for the money.

Nope I am super happy with it. Despite the ranting from some people, is really advancement in sim that we have been craving for decades. Sure it has annoying bugs but this is always the case with the software industry.

It is really important to know that even if you get the sim now, you can still fly in it today and tomorrow AND... you can also wait... all at the same time.

So get it now, enjoy the parts that you will like and... wait for the rest of it to come online while you are enjoying the good stuff currently available.

You coulld try follow thing if you experience bad download 🙂

Thank you for trying to help, though I'm not having any issues with the download speed if the Task Manager is correct. I had an issue where the client would attempt to start the game without being fully downloaded, and several files resetting their download and wasting time even more. The former had me search through the very messy and obscure file structure and delete random files to see what would work, and the latter I believe is caused by the increased server load. And also some crashes related to unplugging USB devices.

But others have been dealing with even more severe issues than that, which is why I'm recommending that anyone looking to get the simulator wait for a few more days. Getting to play it a few days early is just not worth the immense frustration this client could potentially cause, and the amount of people having issues with it is quite close to half.

I think, that you can know, what si good and what Is not so good and you have to decide by yourself 🙂 . I can tell you, that I bought MSFS immediatelly when possible and I certainly do not regret it.

Yeah I agree with you. I think of these complains from people thinking they'd see FSX with improvement graphics and they were shocked to see everything about it is different, UK, camera system, flight modeling.. Etc which I think may have made some people to resist this change and became anti.

I recall, PMDG boss has warned about people not trying the sim with open minded as it represents a big shift. https://forum.pmdg.com/forum/main-forum/general-discussion-news-and-announcements/75469-30jul20-pmdg-s-view-of-msfs-and-the-future-of-simming
