August 21, 20205 yr Curious. Personally I feel way more in control of all axis with a joystick. The way elevator and aileron is connected just seem more natural then for example pushing a yoke and trying to use aileron at the same time for a coordinated turn. Now I have more flight hours with joysticks. Yokes is more ergonomic though so I still fly them as the plains that have yokes dont require a lot of precision.
August 21, 20205 yr To each their own, when I went to flight school I learned on the C150s, therefore I prefer yoke over stick, our school also offered the DA20 Katana's for training as well which are stick, but I prefered the Cessna and Yoke. For the sim I use both and the one that matches the airplane, but I tend to prefer flying Boeing over Airbus and Cessna over some of the other GA aircraft, not because I think they are better aircraft then anything else, just because I like yoke aircraft. August 21, 20205 yr Moderator Every plane I’ve flown in real life had a yoke, so naturally I feel more comfortable with it. However I’ve never owned one for simming and use a stick. I don’t feel bad using a stick with my right hand in the stick and left on the throttle but always wondered how Airbus pilots feel when they transition from FO to Capt and have to fly using their left hand with right on the throttle. I feel fine flying in real life with my left hand on the yoke and right on the throttle but struggle flying in the sim using the stick with me left hand. Apparently no different to Boeing pilots who make the same transition. I've heard from a couple of different pilots who flew both. They both go from right hand on yoke/sidestick and left hand on throttle to the opposite way round. August 21, 20205 yr I used to go from flying Cessnas and Pipers with yokes to gliders and tugs with sticks many times during the same day without even thinking about it. It came naturally, really. These days I am flying everything in the sim with an Airbus type sidestick. Erhard I9 11900k RTX 3080 TI 3 x 55" LED TV 4K, 2 more PCs for displays and hardware connection Prosim A320
August 21, 20205 yr My first real world aviation experience was flying gliders being a teenager, so I didn't even know what yokes are. At the moment I am flying A320/A321 100% of time in P3D, so the story has come full circle (even though buses use sidesticks, unlike centersticked gliders I flew). I do have a yoke which I used when flying MJS Dash 8, LH Maddog, or some boeings (RFP, Dreamfleet, Level-D, iFly, PMDG). As for the preference - I can't say. It feels more natural for me to fly with a stick, but yokes are just fine, being it Cessna or 747. As for the FO/captain transition, I've had no problems with it for three reasons: - I am ambidextrous anyway - (captain) operating the throttle with your right hand, you are holding the yoke with your left one anyway - I've never wasted my time to simulate an F/O in the sim anyway! 😁 Edited August 21, 20205 yr by Rafal
August 21, 20205 yr HOTAS X stick and throttle was cheaper than a yoke and suits my current space restrictions better. In the past I had a few jet fighter and heli sims, so that meant stick in the right hand, throttle(s)/collective in the left. @oqvist I know what you mean about both axes on a stick as they act through one point. Interestingly the stick on a Tornado IDS (centrally mounted in the cockpit floor) can only pivot fore and aft... the handgrip section itself just pivots left & right, still works fine though (we had one set up in the Rig Test dept. when I worked at BAe Warton). My guess is the stick was made that way so the pilot's legs were not in the way of full left and right deflections. Regarding swapping from right to left seat and swapping throttle position - I don't think I'd have too much trouble as I've driven both left- and right hand drive cars with manual transmissions. Some aircraft, such as the Handley Page Victor have throttle quadrants for both seats so you're always operating them with your left hand. The centre console had to hinge up so the bomb-aimer/nav could get into the nose 😉 I guess I'll transition to a yoke when I get my dedicated MD-11 simpit..That'd be maybe never then! August 21, 20205 yr In a perfect world, I should be utilizing either a yoke or a side-stick relevant to the plane. For training purposes, it makes sense to use the same type as the actual aircraft. Despite having yokes and sidesticks, I usually fly with my TM F16 sidestick 🙂 Regards, Shelman S.
