September 26, 20205 yr Any know why VRAM has progressed so slowly, I have 1070 and it baffles me that the 2070 and now 3070 haven’t added more than 8gb. I’m not one of these guys that’s willing or able to pay crazy amounts for a graphics card so I’m hoping if there is a 3070ti 16gb that it’s priced reasonably.

GDDR6 is very expensive and in high demand, especially since GDDR5 is not in production anymore, which forces even the low-end cards to use GDDR6. This is why the original GTX 1650 and GTX 1660 were phased out. The new consoles will put even more strain on that demand.

Another reason why the amount of vram isn't increasing much is that current games simply don't require it, even in 4k. As far as I know there is no test how much vram is required for optimum results. There are some tests that show MSFS reserving up to 16GB vram, if it's available, but we don't know whether all that vram gives better FPS, less frame drops or more LOD, or does nothing at all. Even a future upgrade to directx12 might not require more vram, neither does VR at the moment as far as I know. Buying a 3090 is about giving MSFS as much vram as possible, to eliminate any bottleneck your graphics hardware could pose. If only Asobo could tell us how much vram we need or at least whether more vram actually helps. I'd be delighted if the 3080 super was priced at that as it'd be a massively attractive price point for all that performance.

They’re not gonna dare do that, when they’re selling 3090’s. I suspect if it even does happen, the price will only be slightly less than a 3090. And that’s a big ‘if’ it happens. Anecdotally, you are going to make us of more than 10GB when running the game at 8K or on more than one 4K screen or across 3 or more 1440p screens. However it would be nice to have some actual facts or test results so we know for sure.

If I manually set scenery and object LOD VRAM usage goes up accordingly. It could be that as Asobo continues tuning or even goes DX12 they may reallly not know yet. September 27, 20205 yr I think the 3080 20GB will pitched around 1,000-1,200 depending on the AIB cards. And now some GPU`s have been found to have problems due cheaper caps used on some cards, this could slow down the 3080 and the 3090 cards release, Edited September 27, 20205 yr by G-RFRY Raymond Fry.
