October 17, 20205 yr After reading these posts I simply couldn't hold any longer... I just bought a 3090 through Craigslist. I drove a more than 200 miles round trip to meet and pick up. Don't ask me how much I paid - I'm totally embarrassed that I actually did this. But the card is indeed great. Instead of running 4k@80% rendering scale with Titan Xp, I can run 4K @120% with 3090 and still easily locked at 30fps. A totally irrational purchase.. I shall never do it again, word not allowed.. October 17, 20205 yr @lanrivaldosmith What's your FPS in NYC at low level flight? FSX | DCS | X-Plane 11 | MSFS 2020 | IL2:BoX Favorite aircraft currently: MSFS Savage Cub

How does that affect smoothness (without looking at FPS)? Because the frame time in MSFS is all over the place. By locking with rivatuner, and combining that with G-Sync, it completely smooths the frame time out. If I let it run free and unlimited it is indeed higher frames per second, but I’ve noticed that the frame time is a mess. A high and stable framerate is only one part of getting a game to run smoothly. The other part is this often overlooked term called frametime. Rivatuner will ensure that the frames are paced at regular intervals in each second depending on the framerate limit you set, and there should be an immediate difference in your experience. Of course am still at the testing stage...... I’ll run further tests today.
October 17, 20205 yr Completely disagree with these powerful cards and then you have to limit their fps in a beta software like fsxx. The new rtx series doesn't produce substantial advantage at this moment in flight simulation. Missing the PMDG DC6 in MSFS 2024 (she's here, but...).

Video recording would be great also. Cheers, Rob. Ermmm, I can try at some point this weekend yes. Not something I’ve ever done before. And I’d imagine render scaling at 200 will bring it to its knees?
October 17, 20205 yr I don't understand why anyone with close to or 4k would even think about setting Render scaling at 200, I read that for a 4k screen that it makes the sim run at 8k, why? I run 1080 and feel no need to run anything more that 100 Render scaling. So just what is the point apart from bringing any PC to its knees and lifting VRAM though the rough, Does P3D/Xplane allow you upscale to 8K? Rob since you did this test to show how much VRAM used..over 24GB If I remember right compared to P3D running at 4k because please correct me if I am wrong that you did not run P3D at 8k for a like for like test but highlightered MSFS users more VRAM! I understand the LOD 9. Apart from seeing if Ian gets more FPS that your NASA like PC with TITAN with 24GB VRAM, am just interested in why the test? as it seems you know the out come apart from possible FPS gains and even then why make it run at 8k? pointless. Only now with 3080 and 3090 does 4k really become an option. Many people on the P3D forum and who I talk to have said they regretted moving to 4k because of the huge performance hit. 8k is years away for flight simers. David Murden. October 17, 20205 yr I see no reason to set the Render Scale to no more than 100% at 4k at all. I like mine at 1:1. With the Ultra Preset, the Object and Terrain LOD are already set to 200. How does that affect smoothness (without looking at FPS)? I have a 980ti. I get better fps with my frame rate set to unlocked than I do locked at 60 (even though it may not be hitting 60). If I lock the frame rate to 30, my fps drop to 20. It seems that locking the rate makes the performance worse and locking it lower doesn't help, but instead further degrades the performance. So I think the best thing with MSFS is to leave it unlocked and by what was seen in this thread this applies to the 3090 too (and probably all nvidia cards) James

Your advice is pretty poor, no offence intended. Merely because without stating what you are actually locking it with, that can make a whole world of difference. As can the type of monitor you are using.......
