Quite sad but possible explanation of poor Asobo's quality

And I'm sure they are doing their best. We have already come a long way in just 2 months.

All we have done is gone backwards

Silly comment.. No place for a pity party here. There are 10's of thousands that are more than happy..

So, maybe go backwards to your older sim?

yah water looks worse.. draw distance is worse but somewhat improved this update.. night lighting is definitly worse in los angeles and las vegas,,, weather is worse,,, load times are worse.. the press any key is gone.

Pretty much all of your points could be challenged. Lets pick on the easy one. Load times is great, when comparing to X-Plane MSFS takes slightly longer to get to the menu but is more than twice as quick loading into scenery I have as TrueEarth. Water did go backwards in the previous patch but the reintroduction of reflections is amazing and the water looks way better at night. Night colour intensity I really like, but there are too many lights and floating orbs, this is WIP and Asobo asked for feedback for this in the recent stream. I don't know how you can say weather is worst after such a short time, looks no worst or better to me - visually I think it's still good. 🙂

From the MSFS forums a couple of things have turned up repeatidly for this patch - night lighting which clearly has changed and I just feel is subjective - finding something everybody will be happy with will be tricky and the other thing is CTD which I personally haven't had but Ive only played this patch for a few hours.

Happy campers here should look at the recent Asobo posts. They wouldn’t be asking for patience if everything was just normal. Obviously something is wrong  with the Update 5 and it’s up to them to resolve it.

I think it's more that this is a hugely complicated application with an even more vast and complex ecosystem around it and they are trying to make changes at a fairly rapid rate.   Hopefully a broader testing program will help.

Absolutely spot on. This should be marked as the reason and solution for this thread.

Yeah, that's what is worrying me. 🤣

The way I see it Chock is that instead of sim enthusiats and experts developing the next generation of MSFS and it being dull, Microsoft have asked a game studio to develope MSFS. With that brings a lot of game industry knowledge and moves our genre into the 21st centuary visually, architecturally and programatically. The downside is the sim experience has to be earned and proved in the sim. This is something Asobo have lacked and are clearly working very hard at, in the recent stream they mentioned they are endevouring to hire more people with flight experience to develop and test the platform.

I'll be open with you. I think they've done it the right way - the architecture and design comes first - those bits quite frankly are much more difficult to change later on and set the scope for the implementation which is very impressive - the simulation accuracy is lacking and on forums like this it's really tough to take but they are trying to catch up. It's the reality of the situation. Otherwise Microsoft could have produced something which would have had far less impact and would still be a broken mess because simulation is just not that easy to do right from the ground up.

Early in the life of this forum, when not much was known about the new sim, there was a debate Evolution vs Revolution, which one is better ?

I was in favor of the former, suspecting the enduring teething problems of an altogether new platform. Old boys want to play not tweak. The Asobo EP videos made me change my mind.

The fear was not unfounded. But would an evolution à la P3D have been better ? Or even a piecemeal revolution First terrain and light rendering, stabilize the changes, then the weather, stabilize the changes, then the flight modeling, etc. ?

When I see, for instance, the difficulty and the esthetically mediocre result to add EA in P3D, I still think that Asobo took the right direction.  The terrain, light rendering , weather engines needed to be rethought from scratch and rehabs are not satisfactory. The flight modeling is more debatable, the jury is out.

It's really bizarre how some are having no end of issues and some are having none, this update was flawless for me and Sim looks great

Obviously everyone is struggling a bit right now. We all have been.

My biggest thing is this - the community has offered time and time again since launch to participate in a testing process that would allow some of us to be on a 'Beta' or 'Insider' or whatever you want to call it track that might allow some of these things to be resolved before it goes out to everyone.  It's clear that they don't have enough internal QA resources to properly test everything.

I get it, it's Microsoft, it's like turning the Queen Mary 2.  But this thing is headed for an iceberg if they can't come up with a better process here.  As cool as some of the features of this software are, every update with these problems consumes some of the goodwill people have toward the product.

I honestly think they need to stop doing any patches until they can standup a new user beta program.  That needs to not be Update 9, it needs to be Update 6.  Three more updates with problems like the last few will completely tank the reputation here.

Or.....if offering a 'Beta' is too much of admitting defeat, they could allow users to hold back the update of their copy of the sim to the prior patch to allow people to asses the potential issues before upgrading (which basically turns every release into a Beta without saying so...)

I really don't understand the point of your last para. MS/Asobo has already agreed with the principle of reinstating betas but currently that's not scheduled until Update 9. I agree with your premise that they should suspend further updates until they have a beta programme in place. Their "reputation" is tanking at a vast rate of knots and they need reassure users that updates don't automatically mean automatic CTD and serious game issues by default.

The downside is that probably means no further updates until 2021 as they'll need to move up establishment of the beta programme and then probably run a couple of versions of the next update through the beta to catch the major issues before general issues. However that delay is probably the best thing for MS/Asobo and ourselves.

Give people power to really test their personality.

... imagine if MS and Asobo had decided to call the new sim FS2020... Prologue?  It could carry on without an update for at least 2 years...

Regarding lockdowns: Back in March when the company I work for was announcing furlough closures, and there was consternation about what people would do being at home all day, the IT director had this opinion he later told me when we returned to work part time, "It's fine for me, I've trained for this! (computer nerd, no hobbies involving outdoor pursuits)" :)

This, I hope will be the next step by Asobo. I’m sure (tongue in cheek) they will adopt wider testing before releasing a future patch as the latest problems are clearly embarrassing for the company. The frequency and size of the patches also indicates that the sim was pushed to release prematurely.

That is as clear as mud. 10's of thousands of users are quite happy!
