MSFS lighting was better than X-Plane's before this patch (except the sepia filter), but now X-Plane lighting is better.

Yet a quick search for X-Plane night lighting finds pages of links pretty much hating on it.

Pretty much the same as here, substituting MSFS for X-Plane.

For instance, the star patterns around X-plane lights has always struck me as very pretty. But not at all realistic, unless my eyes were now slightly smeary camera lenses.

Doesn't bother me at all, I like pretty.

But just like with this, its a matter of taste....

Wanted to think you guys were wrong about the lighting, but the life has been sucked out. No subtlety. No variety. No color. No sense of atmosphere or distance. Every point of light seems to have the same regimented intensity. Airport approach lights jump out at you 40 miles away. Sadly...they took the "art" out. Out of the gate, even with all it's faults, one of 2020's most impressive accomplishments was it's portrayal of night flights. This was a ham-fisted step backwards IMO!

Well..... Lets see if Asobo caters to one more try.... Then maybe a try after that..... And then.....

16 pages regarding night lighting... seriously? And the overall conclusion is that some like it and some don't. Imagine that! Take a look at the night lighting in the competing products and if night lighting is your thing then be grateful we have a third option. If you're expecting this simulator to mimic a view you'd see in real life (someone suggested garage and porch lights) you should realistically lower your expectations.

This is a tremendous NEW simulation and with a solid commitment from the development team, will only get better with time!

Actually I'm not sure what was wrong with the night lighting at release.....why the change to "lights on every road and highway" in the latest patch?

Kind regards,

Tim

and now the lights look square which before they looked round as lights generally do....not sure why they made the change, I just hope it's not permanent.

Yep, night lighting is way better than it was. Flying over London at night is a real wow now.

The highway lights are square now and not round as they were before the patch...not sure why they changed them

Sorry, a long way from "perfect". It might be appealing to you, but there's no way you would see this in real life at dusk, unless each of those lights if a 1000W halogen bulb aimed at you. As I said previously, this Christmas tree lighting might be pretty to some, but it's not realistic, and certainly not my definition of "perfect".

To me it's not the appearance of the lighting, so much that every single track road through the remotest moorland seems to be fitted with continuous street lighting.

Try setting the time to actual NIGHT, not dusk or dawn.... it looks terrible. Dusk/Dawn somewhat hides the effect and it doesn't look as bad.

But set the time, maybe around 11pm, and make sure there's no moon shining down either.
