Update on FSLTL AI freeware project

Featured Replies

I know that at some point Jorge mentioned native MSFT/Asobo models and accurate models/liveries, but mentioned COVID complications in relation to asking airlines for permissions etc. I think we should keep hammering Asobo with this requests until someone will deliver a freeware/payware solution.

I feel like Asobo developing the wide range of aircraft models (never mind the even wider range of paint schemes) that constitute the world’s air traffic is a pretty daunting task, doesn’t seem to be a priority  and frankly is not likely to happen to any high level of completion.

Hopefully they can focus on doing whatever needs to happen within the SDK for third parties to really jump into this...there’s obviously a ton of third party content out there, it just needs to have an avenue to function in MSFS.

AIG announced they are not going to work on traffic for MSFS. They're sticking to P3D. Nice move after killing FLAi for Vatsim on MSFS.

Not just for MSFS, killing FLAi altogether.

James

Asobo can't be bothered to even fix the mirrored textures on the Boeing and we want them to model all the ai airline traffic?

They're waiting for the MSFS SDK to have more options for AI. P3D still has better AI related features.

There was a misunderstanding between the FSLTL team and AIG regarding permissions. Some of AIG authors thought FSLTL was going to distribute their models/liveries without permission, which was never going to happen.

FSLTL was never going to distribute any liveries/models without permission from the original authors, any permissions they couldn't get, the end user would have to get the assets themselves from FLAi (if it hadn't shutdown), from what I understand, all FSLTL would have provided in that case are the aircraft.cfg files that would allow MSFS to load the aircraft, none of the actual models or textures themselves would be in FSLTL's files.

That is also what the original IVAO mod you mentioned did, it didn't come with any models and textures from IVAO, it came with instructions and a python file to help the end user to convert the files they downloaded so the AI could use them.

FSLTL team says they still have a bunch of liveries and models, I'm assuming those are the ones they already got permission for before FLAi was shut down.

Just because content is on the Internet does not mean you can subsume it into your project for whatever you want, even if your project is "just a script".  Distributing a tool that is solely intended to violate a license is considered the same as violating the license in many jurisdictions.

The IVAO website is clear that their models and textures are intended only for use on the IVAO network, not in MSFS on VATSIM or for MSFS real traffic or MSFS AI traffic or any other use.  So scripts that convert are violating their license.

I didn't see the FLAi page before it was shut down, but they probably had some agreement with AIG that AIGs work was to be used for P3D and FSX on VATSIM.  Distributing tools to take an installation of that content to use in MSFS would also be violating that license.

Seeing that their existing agreement was about to be used as an excuse for others who don't care about licenses or attribution of work to use their work in ways they did not intend, AIG was totally within their rights to pull the plug.

These so called 'FSLTL' people came into an existing space with existing players/projects and made a giant mess and then played dumb at the chaos they created.  Then they shut down all their public methods of communication/comment and say "we'll announce something later", after they have screwed over the community by upsetting longstanding arrangements with their piracy-enabling tools.

This can't be a "misunderstanding" because the entire FSLTL effort derived from converting the IVAO models and textures which is expressly prohibited per the IVAO website where you download said models and textures.  Then they decided that those assets were "low quality" so they went and found other assets to miss-use.  They knew bloody well what they were doing, they got called out on it, and the entire community is suffering for it with the loss of something that had been around for years.

They are asking permission from all the authors involved before releasing anything for the FSLTL project. FLAi was giving them all the contact information so they could do it.

They've been saying that from the very start of the project.

The thread on the MSFS forums is still open.

While I don't know the full story, the point above does a great job of explaining a major problem we have in this community. There seems to be a wave of individuals who have no respect for established developers. Freeware or payware, people can't wait to bash everything that isn't new. This type of behavior gets us nowhere, and it needs to end. Why on earth would a freeware developer continue to produce high quality work for a ungrateful users?

If you have a problem with a freeware developer, go develop your own solution and stay out of it. If you want to develop an AI solution, you better get to work. My AIG install in P3D 50GB, so you may want to quit your day job.

Personally, I would just like to have decent aircraft in the sky.

If there are multiple offerings that is great - I will use whichever seems to be the best.

With this much antagonism it may well be the case that a Payware version comes out first, so be it.

I really hope MSFS attracts a new talented group of painters to make an MSFS version of AIG. We have the largest audience base of any flight sim in history so I'm sure there'll be plenty.
