PMDG Update: [20MAR21] A glimpse of the Road Ahead

I agree, even though there are still loyal P3D simmers (and that's perfectly fine!), the reality is that the P3D sales base has to have shrunk.  Personally I've passed up on several P3D releases that would have been instant buys a year ago (recent 777, 737 cargo packs, BBJ packs) and will be passing up an upcoming release that would have been an instant buy (FSL Sharklets).  I can't imagine I'm alone.

Hopefully as someone mentioned above we'll start seeing more and more devs moving into MSFS in the next little while.  It's like the wait for COVID vaccines...a small trickle at first but eventually things will accelerate very quickly.

Was just thinking the same thing, some of these previous day one purchases are not so anymore.

I was only looking at the ORBX sale for P3D, there are some great bargains there, and I have hovered over the add to cart button throughout the day, then I never carry through with it.

I hope the people that want to get the PMDG products get them when they are ready. I did find it fairly interesting that PMDG is apparently ( if I read it right ) working with Asobo as well as Aerosoft to help them with their PMDG products, or did I read that wrong? If so I think it's interesting ( don't think they sell similar products ), that another 3rd party developer along with Asobo are helping them to bring these PMDG products to their customer base. I just thought it was cool, if indeed I did read it correctly?

I hope not only the future PMDG customers get what they want for MSFS, but others as well. And when help is needed they can get it from SOME 3rd party developers, as well as Asobo, to get their products out to the simmers that want them!

Good times ahead over the years for those that Enjoy or want to also have MSFS in their hangar. YES, I know some people will NEVER switch, but as long as they have FUN and ENJOY their sim, who really cares? Not me 🙂

PMDG have been working with Asobo since before it was released, They posted pics of the 737 rendered in MSFS 2020 last year, RR(PMDG CEO) mentioned they had a team ready to relocate in Europe to work with Asobo directly, However the Pandemic hit and shelved that. I think the community assumes a lot without knowing the facts and its construed as fact eventually. I have all sims and find all have their unique traits which others lack. I prefer all of them!

Well hopefully that will happen soon, when it is safe to do so. I think more interesting to me was that they had contact with Aerosoft also. Hope it's true and they can all help each other in some small way to get their products to the consumers. Whatever sim(s), people like, then enjoy.

Aerosoft is the distributor for the boxed PMDG products in Europe. They always had a very close relationship.

Why they do not sell the rights and development of the MD-11 to others or others try to buy that aircraft to PMDG and upgrade it themselves?. PMDG did the same I remember I think, they bought or something from other people the work of the MD-11 that he was doing and then PMDG released their product.

That topic has been beaten to death and tried many times.   PMDG MD-11 is dead and will never revive.   Took me a long time to get to grips with it, but I'm fine with it now since TFDI is doing a high level one thats looking very nice.

Great to hear this PMDG news.  Itching to fly boeing again.  The default Boeings in the sim suck rocks. The only thing that is somewhat concerning is the wording of doing everything all over again, as if to justify a $200+ price tag.   For the most part the CRJ is completely redone, and yet they were able to keep the sales price reasonable.   Hopefully its the same with PMDG and especially since that 737NG for P3D deal for MSFS discount should still be in effect.

I kind don't think the camera system is that bad. At first was a bit of learning curve but then you can do many things with it. However, I still think also having chaseplane could be nice to give more options for users.

To my knowledge you still can’t map airplane specific key assignments to an external device like an Xbox controller. That’s disappointing

yes you can, actually I replicate my specific key assignments from P3D.

Like "1" for pilot view, "2" for overhead, "3" center console.... there is a youtube video that explains it in detail.

I mean using a device like a controller instead of a keystroke

I can tell you it is possible and I finally have my Xbox controller setup as I did in P3D. A particularly useful feature is the modifier combo's Y + LEFT ARROW, Y + Start etc.

I use Y as a modifier for trim, views and ATC then X modifier for many flight controls (flaps, gear, speed brakes, parking brakes). Microsoft should use my mappings for the Xbox release! 😁

I agree the camera system is a nightmare but I can also pretty much do everything I could in ChasePlane although I'd to hack the cameras.cfg to get wing views I move and look about in. The only real hurdle is its not yet plane specific although I believe that is coming.

The default mappings on Xbox are atrocious and there is also a bug where if you power your controller on after starting the game it will resets your lovely custom profile to default lol. I have to duplicate it to make sure I have copies because you cant back up to a file.

Asobo's logic is often really odd and counter intuitive with especially the cameras, External and Showcase etc, anyone who ever owned a French car will feel right at home in FS🙂

Yes it is possible.  I have a four way switch on my Warthog Joystick set up to provide the same views in MSFS as I have in chaseplane for P3D.  Generally I use right for FMC, down for centre console, up for overhead and  left for the “default” view.
