One VERY important thing about Windows 11. YOU MUST have TPM enabled in your bios. If not.. No Windows 11 for you.. And trust me. This requirement is a GOOD thing.

TPM?

It took a couple of reboots and fiddling with the UEFI but now I can apparently upgrade to Windows 11.

Secure boot -> On

PTT -> Enabled

This is for an MSI Z370 motherboard which has a TPM slot but no TPM module installed by default.

Hi,

A question, please.

I have a Rog Strix Z390-E gaming. It has the socket for the TPM chip, but it hasn't got the chip.

But, in the BIOS I have the following option: "TPM device selection": "Discrete TPM" or "Firmware TPM".

Now it is on "Discrete" by default. I assume that if I activate "firmware" nothing will happen, because the TPM chip is not installed. Am I all right?

Thank you in advance.

Discrete is the (not installed) Chip Firmware is the one integrated in your AMD or Intel CPU (If it is somewhat recent) There might be minor security drawbacks,but is should satisfy the windows 11 requirement.

Are you sure it's enabled? Some mobo you need to enable 2 things. Secure boot and ptt

Mine is ready. Turn on ptt in Bios did it. Maximus Hero XII.

Enable firmware TPM and you're good to go for Windows 11. It's built in. You may notice some initial lagging upon rebooting but it will clear up and be back to normal.

I got TPM on my system! Just went to bios and enabled it!

How do you tell if you have this TPM thing?

Great topic with good info. Thanks to all involved!

Please activate "Firmware TPM" and all is fine. You don´t need a TPM-chip.

You should be good since you just built a new pc, but in windows, hit the windows key + r and type TPM.msc and press enter. It should bring up the device manager to see if it's enabled. If not you’ll have to do it from the bios

You can just type TPM in the Windows Search bar at the bottom of your screen and hit Enter. Then select the option "Security Processor". A Window should open giving you all the details about your PC's TPM status.

You may need to refer to your motherboard manual for TPM details if you don't have the option. It is either a 12 or 14 pin socket on the motherboard into which a tiny module can be plugged in. The modules seem inexpensive but their prices might skyrocket now. That's if you can locate one. Not exactly something most PC shops keep on the shelf (until now at least).

I am also reading though that most modern CPU's have an inbuilt TPM that might mean you won't have to have the hardware module.

I've looked online for a TPM for my X570 Aorus Ultra and currently there is no availability in the UK for GC-TPM2.0 S model, and my PC fails the Windows 11 test, luckily though you can turn on a software TPM in the Bios and I'm good to go.

It looks like if you have an AMD CPU, which I do, there is a built in TPM type protection with that CPU.
