The world is filled with miserable people need an outlet to whine and complain, when people feel threatened well you see the results

Hahaha were you trying to backup your claim with this:-

Xplane is like a faithful wife that will never leave you gets better with age like fine wine. MSFS is like a woman who needs to keep changing her makeup to get the young men to run after her, and that they do well. I will stick to xplane because I can, not because I have too, if you dont like it, than go back to your holes and leave us enjoy what we have.

I don't know about the faithful part, but if XP is a wife, then she is a wife that you have to pay tons of money on surgery and afterwards you still only want to leave the house with her when it's dark outside...

Yeah I know I'm going to hell for this, I simply couldn't resist 😛

Laminar Research customer -- Asobo/MS customer -- not an X-Aviation customer - or am I? 😉

@rka @Ianrivaldosmith Its funny how men see there wives but never consider how the wives see there husbands. I have seeing some really nice woman and than look at there husbands wondering why do the wives stick with them, i guess thats why XPLANE is still around and the other keeps running away, didnt like her first husband so ran after a younger one that like the pretty leg couldnt care about the smarts.

All I can say is - if the FSExpo presentation stirred the urge of the MSFS fanb**s to swamp these forums with comments...Laminar must be doing something right 😉

Regarding the "ghost town" theory - yes, MSFS has more users (Candy Crush Saga 2 has even more 🙄), but so far user numbers for XP are pretty steady...or at least not declining faster than MSFS users.

Agree with you Janov, there is nothing more beneficial to something than any kind of publicity, everyone is talking about the forthcoming XP12... Are you guys not happy with the other sim? BTW I also have MSFS and I'm happy with it as with my fully stocked XP11. To each their own.

29 pages in 2 days?  Over an upcoming product?

You can't buy that kind of publicity.

For a bunch of people who think X-Plane 12 won't be anything special, you sure are doing a lot of talking in the X-Plane forums.

I can only imagine when XP12 actually comes out, how chaotic these forums will be.

What is the thought process that goes into visiting the X-Plane forums for an MSFS user?

"Shall I fly, what I think, is the best flight sim since God created the universe?  Or should I go and bash X-Plane, which I think looks ugly and has no future?  hmmmm.  I'll go bash X-Plane!"

🤦‍♂️🤣

Microsoft paid a lot more than I or LR did (nothing) to have highly influential youtubers demo their wares. The 800,000 are the people in on the conversation.

Your assumption that new videos are watched by every single subscriber is.... completely wrong.

LR was caught with its pants down

That's true, but they didn't do anything about it. Instead they took no action and remained on course to go straight through the storm. I would hate to see XP die. But if XP12 sales tank there may not be a budget for XP13. Or there won't be enough budget to fix all that's lacking in terms of graphics and world rendering and it will be another mediocre release. I also think Asobo/MS execs are having a good old laugh because XP12 has the same feel as XP11 (legacy sim). It has never been more apparent how far XP is falling behind. And this is just the start of the cycle. So best hope for a new engine is at least 4 or 5 years from now

I don't understand. Is it really impossible to have a conversation about a preview of a new version of XP they are working on without saying how much inferior to MSFS it is? This is so tiring. I LOVE MSFS. I love P3D too... I came to XP last. So for all the talk about how people LEFT X-Plane, what about the ones like me who CAME here AFTER MSFS? And mind you, I haven't LEFT MSFS. I haven't left ANYTHING, for that matter. I greatly enjoy XP, P3D, and MSFS. For different reasons. They all have strengths. But I was drawn to XP because MSFS lack those things, and to an extent, P3D does too. XP is still the only place I can fly a decent A350, for instance. Same for a Boeing 727. Or Boeing 737-200! I can't get them anywhere else! Same with the new Felis 747-200! And his magnificent TU-154! And Yak-40, and An-24. I can go on! The night lighting in XP is arguably the BEST out of all 3 sims! So can't we talk about how good it is? And how much BETTER it will be with version 12? It must be pretty demoralizing to the developers if/when they read stuff like some of the posts here. They work hard to make a better sim for everyone. It takes A LOT of work and they have done SO well on many points. I know they don't post here, but is everyone so positive they don't ever read this? It would be nice to read about some excitement. I saw their Keynote and yeah, it was cheesy at points, but some of the stuff they have shown looks GREAT! I can't wait. It would be nice to see some more positivity.

But is it really impossible to discuss XP12's merits on their own? Without comparison with other sims? There is a lot of discussion that could be had about what people like and dislike about things we have been shown without constantly making comparisons to MSFS. It's annoying when XP users do it on MSFS forums, it's just as annoying here. Can't we all stay on topic of what we are talking about?

Unfortunately, yes.  It's impossible.  Here are the facts.

The few people who come here to bash X-Plane are threatened by X-Plane's longevity and success.  Nearly 30 years, and started by ONE person.  They don't want it to succeed, so bashing it makes them feel more secure about their own choices in MSFS.  Especially after the demise of MS Flight after a few weeks, and the dissolution of FlightSim World before it was even released.

I'm counting on them coming in here and denying everything I'm saying, but I really couldn't give a toss either way, because the more they deny, the more it's true.  If it isn't true, they wouldn't even be here.  They'd be enjoying what they have.  Just like we do.

Think about it.  If MSFS was so great, and they were NOT threatened by X-Plane, would they not be enjoying what they have and shrug off the competition?

Even BobSk8, the hypocrite who DM'ed me and chastized me for trolling the MSFS forums by making 1 forum post in response to someone's incorrect statement about X-Plane, felt he had to make an appearance in here.

It will always happen.  It's been happening ever since I moved to X-Plane in 2008, after being in MSFS since FS5.

Your only options are to either ignore them, or just leave avsim.  Personally, I like avsim. I've been here since FS98.  I've submitted files to the avsim file library.  I just turn it around on them by knowing that the more they bash, the more threatened they are.

I also strongly believe that if Austin had listened to what his customers wanted years back, XP would have been in a different dimension by now, way ahead of any sim available today. Unfortunately, for years, XP development has been based on Austin's own judgment without integrating what XP's users needed/wanted then.

This is so spot-on I don't know where to start.

This is the free market at work and he should have seen this coming.  The money was there, I'm not sure where the focus was.

I'm still rooting for them, but when running a business you have to see the forest for the trees.

You never know who's coming up behind you ... and here we are.

I'd love to know when he was made aware that Microsoft was developing a new ground-up flight simulator.

If that was quickly dismissed without understanding the massive firepower they had behind this version, that's unfortunate.

So, just to clear up any misunderstanding.  Is this thread about XP12 being shown at FSExpo or Laminar's business choices?

If it's the latter, I'm pretty sure there are no multi millionaires in these forums who would be in a position to preach how to run a flight sim software company.  But that's just my opinion.

indeed, typically you would expect only 30% of the 330k viewers so far to have been subscribers, which is why his popular videos generally hit about 3 million views.

A genuine (possibly naive) question here from a former airport engineer, long-time simmer, and real-life recreational pilot, who really likes life-like “eye candy” in a sim and who uses both XP and MSFS for various reasons:

Could/would/should LR sell an optional package of world-wide photoscenery for downloading onto your own external SSD, and/or sell it already on an external SSD - photoscenery without an on-going internet connection? I for one would be interested to buy.

Might be total “pie in the sky”, I don’t know, but hopefully a FRIENDLY discussion point.

Love flight simulation!

Cheers

Very unlikely.  Microsoft owns both MSFS and Bing maps.  So they can do whatever they want with their streaming ortho scenery/photogrammetry.  LR is a private company who would need to license out any ortho scenery.  The costs for this would be so high, that it wouldn't be worth it.  Austin has also voiced his disapproval of ortho scenery, but has left the option open for anyone to create their own ortho scenery.  That's just his choice and his preference.

To give you an idea of what kind of SSD/HDD space you would need for worldwide ortho scenery, MSFS has 2 petabytes worth of streaming scenery.

If you want to add your own ortho scenery to X-Plane, there are many youtube tutorials on how to do this, and it is very easy.  Just time consuming.  But once it's done, it's there.  Most people buy dedicated external drives for just ortho scenery.  Works very well.

No, but OrbX does something close already

You can also get ortho for free for the entire world with ortho4XP (bearing in mind unedited photo scenery has issues)
