Severe Performance Degradation with DX12

On further experimentation, I don't think performance even under DX11 is as good as SU6. Honestly, I'm very disappointed with this update.

this was only a quick test……

At Lugano (LSZA) in the Porter

I'm struggling to maintain 40fps with DX12 - and with consistent frame times (lots of stutters) and GPU held back at about 55% usage.

Switch to DX11 and I'm back to 50+ FPS with GPU at or near 100% and buttery smooth frames.

back to DX11 then and I'm ok with that - its a Beta and its all about the long game here.

If DX12 isn't adding anything to the sim right now in terms of graphics enhancement, why is it such a frame-killer already? What's going on under the hood? I know that DX12 is supposed to enable future graphics capabilities, and I'd certainly understand why these future improvements might affect FPS when they are implemented. But why the dramatic FPS hit now for almost everyone?

I guess as a first step they're just rolling it out to see if it can be delivered and integrated in the real world without borking everything. They were very clear that it was just a test-phase and optimizations / fuller implementations would happen later.

Frankly I don't understand why all the wailing and gnashing of teeth.

I don't know, I think this is the best sim update yet. But, these features should have been available at launch. I'm noticing much more consistent frametimes with very occasional hard stuttering. Yes, DX12 is a bit of a letdown right now, however, it's in; we'll likely see some savvy modders tinker with it. Overall, performance seems solid, getting 50+ FPS in most situations (ULTRA, with Terrain Draw at 250) with the higher end being in the upper 70's. Weather looks very good, and we finally have the ability to shoot approaches to actual minimums. I really can't complain...I mean I can complain, but I'm happy with the state of things. We just need more high fidelity planes ASAP.

Exactly. Just assume when you turn on DX12, you join their open beta channel

Tried it out earlier, just some quick FPS comparisons at my usual spot of EGLL in the A320/A32NX (used the A320 only due to DX12 issues stated with it in the FBW discord).  My FPS was actually roughly similar to DX11 (within 1-2FPS still around 50fps while locked at 56 to let Gsync work on my "compatible" monitor at 48FPS+ but leave headroom for stuff like streaming).  I tested at noon and night with clear, live, and rain preset weather.  However, yeah it's a stutterfest at least when panning the external camera even with caching on ultra.  Definitely looking forward to the optimizations but I'm happy to use DX11 for now.  CPU/GPU limiting and RAM usage was similar in both DX11 and 12 on my system according to the Dev mode graph.

My card is fully DX12 capable and runs the sim beautifully at 4K when the default DX11 option is re-enabled. I lose about 10FPS when selecting the DX12 beta option.

Me too! DX12 is much worse and stuttery compared to DX11. With and without VR! I have reverted back to dx11.....super smooth experience ...KLAX all maxed out with the F18 at 550kts.....no stutters.....

Realistically, the DX12 roll out seems to be a success in terms of what they were looking for.  Until ASOBO and the 3PDs convert everything over it will be stuttery, but it doesn't break the game for me.

I don't know this.

But why we get so many stutters and 25 percent less frames with a completely default sim?

Testing with COMPLETELY default sim should at least be equal in terms of smoothnes and fps.

DX12 rollout in FS2020 seems worse than rollout of DX10 in FSX which was the same fiasco.

None of the textures and whatever else have been converted.

I am not sure that it was a great idea rolling out DX12 (even as an option) at this stage if a large percentage of the user base see it in a negative light.
