Severe Performance Degradation with DX12

Not even sure why people are up in arms .. I do not think this was supposed to be anything more than the bare unoptimized implementation for now. Expectations were told to be set low and the results reflect that.

Don't see anyone up in arms, just discussing it 🙂

I was previously getting a smooth 30FPS even with demanding scenery and graphics settings. Now, with DX12 (beta) enabled, I'm getting a choppy 20FPS. I know that Asobo said there wouldn't be any performance improvement with DX12. But they said nothing about serious performance degradation. Also, DX12 appears to provide no benefit whatever to scenery quality.

Don't waste your time with DX12 Preview, it's garbage.

It's just that they had a deadline to release "DX12" and make the boss happy. Like practically for every other thing.

I am still updating things. Does DX 12 turn on automatically, I thought it was optional.?

It’s optional and on my copy of the sim it started in DX11.

TrackIr on the other hand.....

Not meaning to be contrary, but DX12 has significantly decreased GPU load in my relatively modest system (i7-770K no o/c, GTX 1080, 32 BG ram, 1920x1200 display). I'm locked to 30fps and GPU load is around 80% with DX11, and 50% with DX12. I don't bother tweaking my graphics settings, just leaving them at "HIGH-END".

Very satisfactory, but I'm not sure why I'm seeing one thing and others something else.

After your sim finishes updating, you'll default to DX11 as before. You need to turn on the DX12 beta in the Graphics Options. I'll be interested in hearing your experience with performance with DX12.

There are three outstanding issues with DirectX 12 right now:

  • GPU utilisation is a bit lower across the board, and this can be validated by using an overlay (like MSI Afterburner).
  • Triple buffering is broken, so if you're using V-Sync and not consistently hitting the frame rate target, it will be capped to the next lower one.
  • Sometimes stutters related to RdrThread and CoherentGTDraw can be observed, but I cannot consistently reproduce them so far.

Unless you would like to help Asobo by testing out the DirectX 12 render path, there is indeed no reason to use it right now. As they said, the current implementation is very basic and a straight port, and the fact that it works on my GPU means they have not tapped into any Direct3D feature level 12_0 elements yet. At least DirectX 11 still works fine!

I'm not running an AMD 😄 and 30 years of experience 🤣 and still testing...👀 and it's a combination of hardware / OS / settings, not only some simple settings in the sim 😉 (But as stated still testing, if I like it or not the memory footprint with DX12 is a bit higher compared to DX11 as expected) My guess is that this is still a preview, so optimizations and full implementation of DX12 isn't there yet ....
But I don't see lower frame rates compared to DX11...
