I am currently living in Thailand.  A country which sadly is at the bottom of most scales of English proficiency despite a population paying a fortune for extra English classes.  The  reason I believe is laws requiring the dubbing of all tv and movies or requiring absurd tax charges for not doing so.  And yes....living here now I do speak Thai as I believe if I live someone I should try to converse in the local language.

No problem to an Italian as long as the speaker is not handcuffed.

Nearly all movies in theaters as well as on TV are dubbed in Germany, too. Subtitled or pure original-language performances are rather an exception. However, I doubt there is some law involved in Germany, it's more that most people are used to it and demand it.

Same here in Argentina: I guess it's by law. However, the dubbing here is practically awful, and I end up looking for the same movie/documental in either Netflix or YouTube.

@David Mills thank you for those words, very rare being appreciated for the effort of not using our native language, usually is the opposite.

Given the strong English proficiency in Germany I expected it would just be subtitles, it took me a little by surprise when I discovered most things were dubbed. Although I expect like everything in Germany the dubbing is done to a high standard so there's not much benefit to seeking out the original language audio anyway?

I do think it's wonderful how all these Avsim MFS users from around the globe manage to converse so well in a non-native tongue on such a technical subject, especially given the varigies of English and the dialects and colloquialisms within it.

Opinions differ, but in general I would say yes. Unfortunately there are outliers now and then.

What is annoying are the German titles of several movies, if they are not left alone. Some really spirited English titles are "transferred" into dull ones. I recall a wonderful movie Fly away home years ago whith the German title "Amy and the brands", which doesn't sound like freedom (which it is about) but rather chicken run and bird flu.

That‘s the nice thing about having a lingua franca; it allows you to converse with people from all over the world. Others might feel differently but personally I’m glad that today‘s main lingua franca is English. On the one hand because for me as a native speaker of (a Swiss variety of) German it‘s easier to learn than, say, Mandarin, and on the other hand I simply just like the language. As other non-native speakers have said above, it‘s also a great way to improve one‘s English. I‘ve picked up many colloquialisms and idiomatic expressions that you don’t learn at school, some of which have become part of my active vocabulary.

Yes, that German tendency to invent english expressions that don't exist or mean something totally different in real English sometimes is breathtaking -  and can get really funny if you use them abroad. Think about "handy" (=mobile/cellphone) or "homeoffice" (=working from home).

One of my favourites is the Italian release of "The Sound of Music" was titled "Tutti insieme appassionatamente". Run that through Google translate and you get "All together passionately". 😉
