And that goes from " Hey, I got my PPL today! ". Reply: "OK !"  to  "My father died today".  Reply:  "OK !" 

It has become a total automatic sickness. Most people don't even realize the're saying it. Appropiate or totally inappropiate. doesn't seem to matter... "OK ! ".

That really sounds as if they don't care.

“Amazing” is the default retort in the UK primarily by young people who seem to talk in cliches these days.

Other cliches include “I’m so sorry for your loss”and “Thank you so much”.

Just rolled out on autopilot with no thought whatsoever.

I hear Awesome loads, plus other superlatives. It is irritating but seems to be part of a bigger trend. Exaggerated descriptions or inflammatory language. Some of the media outlets in the UK are terrible in this respect. Minor irritation between two parties becomes "Rage". Disagreement becomes "Hate" and a desire to oppose becomes a "Jihad".........inflammatory language or over the top superlatives with very little room for nuance. Polar opposites everywhere and very little middle ground.

Regarding insincere automatic responses.....I guess we all know when we hear them if they are sincere or not. We have evolved to spot the difference, sound, body language, past experience of a person or situation. 

If you want a sincere greeting in a restaurant try Greece, particularly Crete. If you want insincere try most major cities. A generalisation I know but hey😉

Seem to recall "Far out man" and "bitchin'" in my 70s decade.  "Radical" also was heard I think...that may have been the 80s though.

What irritates me is when they say "i" is instead of it is, or it's.

And why do young people when they ask for something in a shop or restaurant say can I get? What the hell! It's can I HAVE? 

And mishtery instead of mystery.

They aren't speech impediments they're habits, it spreads like a disease.

Yep, add ‘em all to this list. I do find “hi guys” amusing when the target audience are all female. 🤣

I had three daughters and a son.  And when they were all in their teens both the daughter and my son said, "You guys" when addressing the group.  Guys is unisex here.
