In-depth interview: Jorg & Seb on MSFS 2024 after FSExpo'23

Not trying to be negative, as most of this stuff sounds awesome, but i am not looking forward to the long process that will be needed to iron out all of this stuff. 2020 is pretty stable now (but not perfect) and it took a long time to get here. Not really a fan of starting that process over again. At least we have 2020 to use while all this is going on.

Right so ok, for those who seek stability and don't wanna bite the bullet on the initial release(s) of 2024, best to keep using 2020 until they feel 2024 is stable enough. The good thing is 2020 and 2024 are independent, both can be used, and MS/Asobo cloud services will keep supporting 2020 clients after 2024 releases.

And to settle one specific discussion once and for all, right from the horses mouth:

Vasco: You said yesterday that MSFS is not a game…

Jorg Neumann: It isn’t.

It’s quite obviously a game.

We’re role playing at being pilots.

If Jorg thinks (or says)  it’s a game or not , matters not one jot.

I took it to mean he says a game is something with win/lose conditions, or you accumulate points, etc. A few virtual worlds I have been in that were complete sandboxes we had the same "IT'S NOT A word not allowed, DANGIT" conversations. Likely because "gaming" is something the unwashed masses perform.

For me, yeah. It's a game. I generate my own criteria for sucess and what I want to get out of it.

He probably answered it like that as there is a whole debate that MSFS is game but P3D and X-Plane are simulators in my view is a silly debate to have as they are all games at the end of the day.

Whatever it is called or perceived as by others from "game" to "simulator" to whatever the heck else, as long as MSFS satisfies and keeps advancing flight realism, world visuals realism, avionics realism, weather realism, etc then that's all I care about. If they keep adding other aspects of aviation simulation such as the mentioned missions & career modes, then that's great, even if I won't end up using all of them. If all this expands the user base to bring in those who never tried flight sims before and then stay on to keep using it, that's great too!

The presence of extraneous features does not mean I don't get to enjoy the features that I do care about. Given that MS clearly has deep pockets and is building and investing in a sizeable 500+ member team to make MSFS a multi-purpose flight and civil aviation simulator, more power to them!

Whatever... He is just in charge of the product. What does he know... 🙄

Discussed a million times already. We know that it’s both. It’s a simulator and it belongs to the category of « videogames ». The way people name it says something about the way they perceive and use it. Both are correct. A BMW is a category of cars. So it’s wrong to say that it’s not a BMW and it’s also wrong to say it’s not a car. It’s a BMW and a car.

Unless we are flying IRL, we are all role playing as pilots in any flight simulator including even level D sims right, so by that definition they are all games 🙂

In any case, what Jorg is obviously trying to convey here is that *they* don't consider MSFS a game in the typical sense what we has PC/Xbox consider what games are... i.e. realism is the prime priority for any computer simulator software that attempts to recreate whatever activity within our computers, to the extent that is possible within the confines of our systems of course (be it flight, driving, trains, trucks, farming, etc).  So in that sense, MS/Asobo are also working on 2024 with that goal in mind. Due to the hysteria that ensued after the first trailer from many about "oMg 2024 iS aLl aBoUt ArCaDey MiSsIoNs!!" they probably had to clarify that 🤷‍♂️

People need to understand that what shapes the product (about usage) is the final user.

I’ve been passionate about aircrafts/flying since I was a kid and my first contact with a flight simulator wasn’t really about the simulation. I was mostly playing a game. Some years later and I was buying more complex add-ons and using 3rd party apps to complement my simulation.

So, what really matters to me is Asobo/MS have compromised to deliver the best flight simulator. If people want to use it as game, it won’t affect me. The more the better.

9800X3D@H150i // Msi RTX 5090 Trio OC // 64GB DDR5 6000mhz CL30 // 2TB + 1TB Nvme
Dell 27" 2127DGF - 1440p - Gsync - 165hz
Thrustmaster TCA Sidestick Airbus // TCA Quadrant Airbus // TFRP T.Flight Rudder Pedals // Logitech Flight Multi Panel

Words have definitions.  People who claim it's not a simulation,   should probably consider reading the definition of the word.  No offense intended to anyone,  but it's an insult to all the developers who are coding their life away.

It's a simulation,  which some people use as a game.  Much like every other simulation.   To me the gate keeping sounds like elitism to a certain degree.   You gonna tell A2A that they are attempting to simulate an aircraft?   Or PDMG?

The things you say have an impact in the world.

He also called the atr expert level and the A310 study level, just because he’s in charge of the product doesn’t mean other people can’t consider it a game.

He likely uses the phrase “not a game”so as to keep people like you happy as you seem to have some issue with the phrase “game” when describing this hobby.

When I’m being assessed in the Boeing sim at work I’m “in the sim” (I.E. not playing a game) when I’m enjoying playing fs2020 I’m playing a flying game.

I’ve no issue with others saying they’re playing a sim when playing fs2020 not sure why you’re so triggered by the phrase “game”being used.

As ever, each to their own. Personally I love playing the game fs2020 and have no problem with people saying (or thinking) I’m playing a flying game.

Most people (outside flight sim world) would think we’re playing a game, including most pilots I work with. Most (including my wife and kids) think it’s funny I play a flying game. In the same way people think it’s odd/funny when adults play other online role playing games.

It doesn’t bother me one bit as I love playing fs2020 and it certainly doesn’t lessen my enjoyment of the game/sim.

Why on earth is it an insult?

What’s wrong with being involved in making a fantastic flying game that millions love playing? I’d be proud if the thing I made was enjoyed by so many.

Perhaps you only think it’s an insult as you think the phrase game is somehow demeaning or describing a lesser product?

Either way it’s a really interesting interview and thanks for posting it whoever it was.

You're all wrong, it's neither simulation nor game, it's Simcade!
