Scenery order management

Featured Replies

Hi !

A tip seen on the Jetstream Designs FB page:

open your MSFS options menu -> General options -> Experimental.
- look for "Package reorder tool", and set it to "ON".
- this will open a new window. Look for the scenery you want to move and click on the right arrow next to it. This will move the scenery at the bottom of the list. 😉

I have had MSFS20 for three years now and never even thought about the scenery order. Is this like scenery file nightmare in X-Plane, where I needed external software to puzzle out the correct sequence of scenery loading?

I thought "scenery order" was a P3D and FSX thing.

No need.. "if it aint broke".. 🙂

This has been around for quite a long time by now in MSFS. It’s useful if you have conflicting scenery when not properly layered in the right order.

I can't say I've seen a layering error per se, they're usually incompatibilities caused by updates and later patched out by developers in all the cases I've had.

Only time I needed to use this was to fix the double runways in FSIA with the Seychelles FSDG scenery when also using Navigraph.

If you see double runways, put one scenery at the bottom of the list, so it loads last and therefore displays on top. That may cure the issue. It's  easier than renaming a scenery folder with zzz added to the beginning of its name.

5800X3D, RTX4070, 600 Watt, one or two 1440p 32" screens, 64 GB RAM, 4 TB  PCle 3 NVMe, Warthog throttle, VKB NXT EVO stick, Honeycomb Alpha yoke, CH quad, 3 Logitech panels, 2 StreamDecks, Desktop Aviator Trim Panel. Crystal Light VR.

The renaming trick may not work anymore, as the load order was changed from alphabetical when the package reordering tool was made available.

I've used it just once, for a bush strip scenery I made in Papua Indonesia.  If you sim in this part of the world, you know you basically need Wantok's mods to fix terrain issues, vegetation etc.  Well, one of the polygons from his mod encompassed the ridge my strip was on, so if a person is using both sceneries, they have to move mine to a higher priority than the Wantok mod.  Otherwise my strip is covered with trees.

Those are the kinds of things that can happen, and it's really nice we have such an easy way to deal with it now.  Takes about 15 seconds to move a scenery, only needs done once.  Good stuff.  👍

As msfs loads scenery in alphabetical order, I simply prefix my addons with ZA, ZB, etc. to ensure that they load in the order I want them to.  There are a few aircraft that will not work if you change the folder name though.

It doesn't anymore, though; at least not entirely.  It changed from loading alphabetically when they introduced this tool.

I remember that scenery order in P3D and FSX, What a royal PIA. I don't do anything in MSFS, and it just works.

Only issue I have seen is if two MSFS scenery use the same name for a texture, the first one loaded is what gets used.
