getting much improved TLODs

What exactly do you need improved TLOD for? Do you miss the runway now without better TLOD?

MSFS2024; first thing I'll do, turn off 3d rendered pebbles

there will be a slider for that, so you don't get stone-d

That’s for sure not the only thing they are working on. But mentionning such details speaks volume. They want to attract even more « gamers » who don’t really care about core-aviation. No mention so far about stuff who really matters like correct dynamics during stormy weather or the simulation of density-altitude. Or what about 3D-weather-radars? But I was expecting that tbh…

You fail to understand the context. He was interviewed by a news outlet focused on gaming in general. And article was mostly about graphic fidelity, hand crafted cities and trial and tribulations acquiring Swedish aerial cartography, so it was a natural segue to enter the domain of extremely detailed terrain.

It would not make sense to introduce weather radar or even weather in general. He simply responded to questions asked and kept it close to the subject.

This is getting kind of silly at this point. I think if you don't want to get the point that's entirely ok ( I don't care enough to try and convince you), I don't see the point of going back and forth with you on how having improved graphical fidelity is somehow a bad thing.

I'll rest my care here.

Incredible.

Something I sometimes like to do while flying a helicopter or bush plane over the countryside in VR  is spotting somewhere picturesque from the air, landing and getting out of the aircraft for a stretch.

Sat , or laid out beside your aircraft having a breather in VR is a really incredible experience. So sat beside a river in a world with this level of detail sounds amazing to me.

I’m also hopeful with their new aerodynamicist on board the aircraft feel will be up to the same level as the pebbles.

I know Mr Gates is probably only doing this to keep me inside my VR headset and not leave my house, but I can’t resist.

I see the usual suspects taking the lighter to their hair, and a certain other band of cohorts coming in with their usual silly talking points 🙂

What both sets don't seem to grasp (more likely they're being disingenuous), is that this interview is about world updates and graphics.. so shock and horror Jorg focuses on tidbits (pun intended) about those aspects in MSFS 2024. Gonna go out on a long limb (over a stream of pebbles) and say that given they've invested in 500+ people on their team, they're able to keep pushing the boundaries on graphical fidelity *and* keep pushing on many other aspects of flight simming.

Oh, and we know this because:

Dude, Turbo and the rest are having a bit of fun. They're not on the same page with you. You are the only binary thinking one here with your assumptions.

Then you got the usual crowd that get laser-focused on this excerpt and use it as some kind of "gotcha" that the Asobo teams have their priorities all out of order and of course steer the conversation into the usual squabble. Critical thinking just leaves the door I guess.

Bang on.. I'd posit that said group of usuals just can't take the fact that MSFS as it stands now and MSFS at it'll be in 2024 can and will do multiple things well, so they try to push the "either/or" trope. Critical thinking is certainly not within their means, and I suppose we just have to watch them with both pity and laughter as they flop about trying to push their talking points ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Viewing on chrome with google translate, so let's see what the interview is actually about and how it lead to the discussion about graphical fidelity in v2024:

Title of interview: We talk about the Norden update with Flight Simulator boss Jorg Neumann

Q: With this new Nordic update, from what I understand, you have spent a lot of time improving the Swedish cities of Visby, Malmö, Gothenburg and Linköping. Tell us a little about how you reason when choosing which cities to polish?
A: Several different parameters are important here and a large part of the process of choosing which cities to upgrade is about availability and permission. We use external companies that fly over and photograph these locations for us and there are loads of details and conditions in terms of weather and sunlight, season and availability come into play. Of course, we also listen to the players' wishes.

Q: Stockholm, our capital, is missing from this list... How come?
A: We know that many players are disappointed by this and believe me when I say that we are just as disappointed, but this is solely about the Swedish government, which took a lot of time to approve the aerial photos and initially demanded that we erase certain areas. Everything has been resolved now, however, and Stockholm will be released as a separate update in a few weeks. So a bit late, but it will happen before the end of the year. Sweden has generally been a challenge compared to many other countries and at the same time one of the countries that previously looked the worst in the entire game and this has thus been a priority now for us to improve. From the start, the Swedish main registry office wanted SEK 25 million in payment to let us use the country's own maps, which of course we were neither prepared for nor willing to pay, but then the EU stepped in and changed a special law, which helped us on a broad front and so not only in Sweden. You live in a challenging country, haha. Getting all your height differences, mountains and mountains to look good is not easy, but we are working on it. For Flight Simulator 2024, we also have tons of really cool topographic improvements that we'll be showing off shortly. That game is a very big step forward graphically. Many will be shocked, I think.

Q: Tell me more!
A: Haha, I shouldn't... Not right now anyway. The idea is to wait a bit on that but we can say this, I recently played Forza Horizon 5 and was blown away by how incredibly beautiful it is, even if you stop the car and study details on the ground. So Nice and Detailed We aim to make the 2024 game so nice with a different kind of detail and photo-realistic accuracy in terms of topography and more. I flew over a patch of forest in Flight Simulator 2024 the other day and chose to land in a place where it was possible to study in detail thousands of rocks underwater in a stream, for example.

Note for the second question's answer Jorg mentioning about topographic improvements in v2024 as part of his answer and then interviewer pressing more tidbits which lead Jorg to talk more about, surprise surprise, the topic at hand 🙂

Truly hope by "we'll be showing off shortly" he means this year and not spring 2024 🤞🤞

It appears the fun has gone way over some people's heads in this thread, reading every post seriously and not as I said facetiously 🤣 people having a laugh about pebbles then the high and mighty brigade arrive with their pitchforks missing the fun in the posts entirely, lol.

ATC isn't important....whats important is how many pebbles can be rendered 🙂

Well.....

I suspect MS now (if it did not before) have plans for this engine that at this point may extend quite a bit beyond just flight simming.

Racing games? Shooters? Trains?

Microsoft's version of Unreal Engine?
