W0w! Everything's gone

Featured Replies

A strange one today, after seeing some update drop for Win 11 this morning, followed by a small update to MSFS, everything's gone ! The community folders empty, and the Official folder is wiped out as well. Luckily i always back up the official folder, so re-installing isn't too bad, Usually the only time i had seen similar was if you had not left the Beta by a certain date, but i don't think that's the case now.

MS did that to me once after running a beta and I've never used a beta version since as a result.

So far so good, and I did push a Win 11 update before SU14 going final, and am in the Beta branch... Well, some guys aren't lucky 😕

There was a large Win 11 update here last night 2H23, i am wondering if that was the culprit.?

Yes, but.......a Windows update should not wipe any other software from your PC?

I don't see how a Windows update would possible cause this - but I know Windows can do weird things at times, so I'd never rule it out entirely 😉

Anyway, it's a good reason to remind everyone :

- back up the entire MSFS main folder from time to time (especially before entering a beta). Just copying it in the File Explorer to another disk is sufficient. In case of any issues (deleted accidently, or reverting from a beta) simply copy it back and voilà! You saved yourself from re-downloading everything, which can be a hassle, even on a fast connection.

- if MSFS asks to redownload the full 130GB or so, make sure the install folder shown on screen is correct. Sometimes the files are still there, but MSFS forgot the folder. If this is the case, just change the path to your install folder.

I'm sure the OP @Car147 is aware of that, but many of the issues of being forced to re-install MSFS can at least be alleviated to some extent. And it's certainly less threatening to join a beta when you know you can simply revert by opting out again and copying back the files from your backup instead of downloading everything again.

It's Avsim, never seen a bunch of people with such severe gremlins in their machines when it comes to issues I've never even heard of 😅

Come on you can't blame @mpo910 for not being in a joking mood while seeking genuine help after something like this happens....

Sorry, wish I could help but I've been seeing this issue pop up on both forums for a while now, which MSFS version are you using?

No issues here after W11 update 23H2 KB5033375!

I have MSFS Premium Deluxe Store Version (never enroled in any BETA).

I also don't see how a Win Update could delete stuff from your PC. May I ask if you use other 3rd party stuff as linker or whatsoever?

Well what'd ya know, I flew yesterday just fine. Noticed the latest Win11 update today so installed that, rebooted to start MSFS and voila - all settings reverted to default after I get the initial Setup screens upon loading 😖 most of my controllers reset to default which is a MAJOR pain in the backside, another day another "WHY MICROSOFT WHY?!?". CBA with it tonight so will fire off an rather fiery Zendesk ticket to tell them to allow ALL settings to be saved LOCALLY not on the next to useless bloody cloud 😡

Saitek X45 HOTAS - Saitek Pro Rudder Pedals - Logitech Flight Yoke - Homemade 3 Button & 8-directional Joystick Box, SNES Controller (used as a Button Box - Additional USB Numpad (used as a Button Box)

No issues on my end after installing that windows update.

Are you on Steam or MS Store?

Edit: Oh actually I haven't installed that update yet, that was different update I installed a couple days ago.

Ok so main panic over (Steam);

  • Controller Profiles reverted to Default, so had to change them back with the arrows and thankfully they are intact (backed up the steam folder just in case)
  • Graphics/Data/Sound etc Options all reverted to Default, thankfully had screenshots saved so manually changed them back (backed up UserCfg.opt for Graphics, can't see how to backup the others)
  • Assistance Settings reverted to Easy <sigh>, can't see a way to back these up.
  • Flight Settings/World Map reverted to Default, manually changed these back (can't find a way to back these up either)

I've said this before and I'll say it again; I seriously hope they change this god awful need to rely on saving mundane settings to the Cloud and not locally, they *NEED* to be saved locally (as well as the cloud) to help prevent complete clusterballsups like this that have been happening to players since Day One.
