So, is Black Square Number 1?

What @Fielder means, I think, is that they would rather buy a mediocre version of a plane they love (assuming no excellent version is available) than an excellent version of a plane they find "meh".

Yep. I learned that lesson early in life, to never let my ego tell me what I love the most is the best. Or vice versa.

That comes firmly under the heading 'Mama didn't raise no stoopid kids' 😁

Why only the mediocre one? If I "Love" some product then I will get the most expensive version that makes financial sense. For instance AMD 7950x3d I may "Love" but for my machine 7800x3d makes more sense in terms of Bang for Buck, so I would go for that. Not a Mediocre one such as 7600. You want the Bang for Bucks.

Yeah but he doesn't "love" the Dukes.  What he means is, imagine that his favorite plane is the IAI Pucara.  And then imagine that there is only one IAI Pucara available for MSFS, and it's sorta -- not that great...decent, but not great.  He chooses to fly the Pucara OVER the Dukes (yes!) because he really doesn't like the Dukes.

So it's not about bang-for-buck for him.

I don't have the Duke, but from what I can tell it doesn't have that engine character that the Comanche has. Like right now my Comanche has low pressure in cylinder 4 so I have to keep the rpm up to keep it getting too cold and misfiring. There is something to be said for that deep engine simulation. Deep and accurate systems modelling does bring the cockpit to life, and BlackSquare has that in spades, but the individual cylinder simulation (along with the simulation of all the other engine components) really gives the Comanche some extra soul that I don't feel in BlackSquare planes (or any other planes tbh). I also think, other than the elevator sensitivity at low speed, that the Comanche is one of the nicest planes I have to hand fly.

I am probably biased toward A2A though, as I just loved my A2A FSX planes too.

BlackSquare is definitely up there as one of the best, though it has weak points. Flight modeling seems a bit hit or miss, and the state saving is not great. Could also do with walkaround, airframe failures, and deeper engine simulation (at least for pistons, I don't know enough about turboprops) to really bring them up to top tier, untouchable, status.

I feel Scott of A2A and the developer of Black Squares passion and heart to bring us the best study level small GAs are tied for number 1. A2A has been at building system rich planes for some time now so they have an advantage. However, Black Square has become almost on par with A2A in an extremely short time and if they continue with that pace, we might see a lead change. With having two highly devoted and meticulous developers seeking to keep pushing the boundaries and releasing highly system and feature rich planes, we are all winners.

Right now, with all things compared, I'd say A2A with its native Input Configurator and ability to work outside the sims constraints is the difference for me to see A2A holding 1st place in small GAs.

Both have some advantages over the other, as many have said, and on paper the A2A Comanche might still have an edge over the Dukes. But considering the development time and the fact that Black Square is basically a one-man show, his work just feels a bit more impressive to me. At this rate, we may see the Black Square Beech Starship released before A2A have even officially announced their next project.

Ya true 🙂, although to be fair A2A spent a bulk of the initial dev time in developing their AccuSim framework first (like they've done before for P3D and FSX), so hopefully they're able to churn out the next few aircraft quicker. But it is interesting they've not even announced the next bird, unless they plan to do so when it's closer to release.

True, but even in FSX and P3D it sometimes took several years between new A2A releases (partly because they were busy with professional training software). In the past they've often revealed their upcoming project just before release, so I'm not surprised we haven't heard anything yet. It will be interesting to see at what pace they can now deliver new projects and how they will deal with new projects vs their significant backlog.

I'm going a little off topic but I hope to see a non boring plane from a2a....their "all planes go to heaven" piper aerostar, or the p51 civilian mustang etc.  something fast...  Please not a c172 schmohawk.

Thankfully black square is doing the exciting planes.

It all depends on what you are looking for in a simulator. For many Carenado will be developer 1 for others BS or A2A.

For my personal taste I place much more value on good physics and flight modeling A2A plays in another division far above the rest.

With the Duke out, I wonder if anyone is still using their gauge overhaul  versions.

Panels already made, all they need is the plane and with the duke technology and we have a bunch of great planes.

Oh and the sound engine and oh the ...

ok not so easy, but the panels are ready. 🙂

Deep down I know you don't believe that will come about. Scott didn't own it long enough to wring every bit of information he wanted/needed (?) out of it.

Not only that, I think the ante has been raised by MSFS since he had it.

No, forget the Aerostar. The next one from A2A will be the......Aaaagh, slumps over, dead.

I thought they said they had enough info on it.  We still need.

p51 civilian mustang etc.

My favourite fun plane in FSX. Especially after 'someone' there told me on the forums I wasn't skilled enough to handle it. I had to prove it was their install scripts not my 'skills' at fault. It was fixed soon after. Found a video I made in 2017 recently of a Swiss trip I never got round to uploading. Don't think people want to see FSX videos anymore lol!

I absolutely loved their P51 civvy version.

That said I don't think the Comanche is boring. Especially doing IFR in bad weather with that limited AP. It's quite a handful - you really don't have the time to get bored ha.
