Can anything be called a flight simulator if it still can't accurately simulate a crosswind landing in a 172?   Will 2024 be able to do so; if not there is little reason for me to buy it.

Ummm...WHAT...? Are you talking about the G1000? That's a pretty good flight model, no two ways about it. And don't forget, it's a Default addon.

But the real cost to me of MS2020 was not the purchase price of the sim--it was the time of tweaking, testing, and searching the forums that I will never get back--hundreds of hours spent not flying but fixing.

Beta testing is work...somebody else's work...like the one's who are getting paid for the product.

Uhhh...off base again here, too.

If you think MSFS is a non-flying time sink, you clearly never owned FSX or P3D.

Even X-Plane requires a relatively high amount of setup and maintenance.

MSFS is, quite honestly, the ne plus ultra of a low maintenance flight simulator.

Your last sentence, however, is woefully uninformed and inaccurate. There are plenty of facts in evidence

Thanks for your thoughtful response.

I don't think I consider a list of promised features and improvements by Asobo to be facts necessarily.  What I have been looking for is a report by someone who has used 2024 and can show or at least describe something for all to see as an example of the improvements that will distinguish the two sims.

Perhaps a good idea would be a video that actually showed a crosswind landing in a 172 in the new sim to show how much improvement there is in the flight model of MS2024 (the flight model being the most important attribute of a sim for many of us).

That would clearly show a fact that would tend to change my opinion to some degree.

I’m certainly not sitting here a few months from release wondering how it might disappoint me.

Tempered expectations, my friend, are the key to happiness.

Okay, literally true and I can kinda understand that perspective. Like you said, best to wait to see if it's going to work well for you.

Based on what I've experienced since 2020 and in other flight sims quite a bit longer than that, I feel good that v2024 will deliver the features / improvements we've heard about.

I'm also confident that they won't be *as good* as we might like them to be... For e.g., the C172 G1000 isn't going to fly as well as the A2A Comanche. BUT since it is still an Asobo Reference Model, I'm sure we'll see improvements there to highlight the new features. And hopefully the Guimbal Cabri, too.

I'm genuinely curious: which 172 addon, or other aircraft addon, do you believe handles crosswind landings with sufficient accuracy?

The 172 with REM in X-plane 11.55.  The necessary crosswind compensations feel similar to real life to me.

have you used the 2020 172 G1000 since the last sim update?

There have been improvements? Are they documented somewhere?

They backported some ground handling physics changes from 2024.

  • New high accuracy physics system to enable vibrations and micro movements
  • Enabled new soft gears on the Cessna 172 and Guimbal Cabri G2
  • Optional soft ground collision model for tires / flexible gears
  • More accurate ground contact model
  • Ground Contact Resolution improvements
  • Improvements to ground handling and ground collision physics for the Cessna 172 and the Guimbal Cabri G2

From what I have seen thus far in MSFS2020 and the info released so far on MSFS2024….the only that I will be disappointed come November is if there isn’t a release in November due to delays / fixes etc.

MSFS2024 It’s going to be epic for sure…a day one purchase (for the stats), but I may wait a day or two to download and avoid server issues.

Not since the update.  I'll take a look at it within the next few days.  Thanks for the suggestion.

Most likely get on day one. Most likely won't get to install it we all know what happened over 4 years ago and with mostly every new update that comes to 2020 the servers just can't handle the traffic.

Many thanks! Will try that out tonight (right before I take the new T-6A for a spin!). 🙂
