FS2024, are you at all bracing for disappointed?

Should have thrown out your computer while you are at it and already ordered a new one. 😉

Nah, I usually change PCs every 6-8 years. I see no need to upgrade for MSFS 2024.

Also all in on day one. None of the major bugs/issues w/ MSFS2020 have ever been infuriating to me like they are to some, just minor annoyances. Big picture, I've loved every second of it and I expect

Day 1 or Day 2, something like that.

I only have about $250 worth of add-ons for FS2020 - my real flightsim cash goes to DCS - but I hope my PMDG 737 carries over.

I'm just flying for the fun of it.

Hi,

In 2019, shortly before the release of MSFS 2020, I had a rig built with above-average components that were supposed to be more than enough for the new simulator.

I soon realized that I had been wrong. The siren songs that an Intel i5-4460 or an NVIDIA GTX 770, Radeon RX 57, 8GB of RAM, etc., etc., would be enough, gave way to harsh reality.

And what's worse, things have not improved substantially during these four years.

This time it won't be the same for me. I will probably buy MSFS24, but not on day one! And I will certainly wait until the dust has completely settled, and the truth comes out before changing the components in my PC.

Regards

Most simmers have seen a big improvement since the first FS2020 release. Much lower temps and far fewer CTD's. If you are still getting bad perf then check Event viewer, as I suspect there must be some driver or hardware malfunction. Other than that not much to say. Unless your flying is so erratic it is stressing out the system components 🤭

.....So I wish to make a clarion call to all our first day buyers. We are sending you in first. You are our special operatives and reconnaissance teams whose task is to relay back to us the facts of the matter. It won't be easy. Some of you will suffer enormous wait times and then have corrupted downloads and have to do it all again. Some will suffer CTD's they have never experienced before. Some will be bitterly disappointed with the size and shape of the pebbles. And of course, some of you will just not make it out and FS2024 will be declared wiped from your computers for ever.....

....and some will apparently just buy it to support the community, and never bother running it

Thinking of it differently, what features or expectations must FS2024 contain in order for you to be completely happy about dropping coin and side stepping into a very similar flight sim?

Immersion killers all.  The four things that will really disappoint in MSFS2024... if MSFS still has:

  2. Suicidal ground personnel.

Hardware: i7-8700k, GTX 1070-ti, 32GB ram, NVMe/SSD drives with lots of free space.
Software: latest Windows 10 Pro, P3Dv4.5+, FSX Steam, and lots of addons (100+ mostly Orbx stuff).

Seeing as though I must have already spent about £1,500 on 3rd party software consisting of aircraft, scenery, ATC, and other utilities, that doesn't include any hardware, most of which will be used in MS2024 as well. £120 is small fraction of my total spend.

AMD 9800X3D,  NZXT X73 RGB AIO COOLER, Gigabyte X870 Aorus Elite WIFI7, 64GB 6000MHZ RAM, 4TB Samsung Pro NVME, 4 TB Crucial P3+ NVME, 4TB Crucial SSD, Gigabyte Gaming OC Geforce RTX5090, Antec C8 ARGB Case, X55 JOYSTICK/THROTTLES, LG 4K C4 42" TV/Monitor 120 Hz, 2 Dell 1080 monitors. Honeycomb Alpha Yoke, Bravo Throttle. Thrustmaster TPR Pedals. Moza AB6 FFB Joystick, Pimax Crystal Light VR, Tobii Eye tracker, Steelseries Arctis 7+ Wireless Headphones.

I'm in on day one but I will still use MSFS 2020 as my primary flight sim until 2024  reaches a certain level of maturity and stability.

In terms of bracing for potential disappointments, look at the photo below

Live weather has the cloud types and positions pretty good but once again poor cloud density is messing up the scene

HAzYvhP.jpeg

Now have a look at what conditions are like irl

I am worried that this nonsense will persist in 2024. Seb has mentioned a cirrus layer and more accurate lighting but if they don't fix cloud density, I will still be very disappointed with live weather.

I don't have high expectations for any cloud/weather improvements, but I might be positively surprised. Better cloud density, more cloud types and no "volcanic ash" clouds would be awesome.

Another area where my expectations are low is ATC. Overall (I'm hoping) my expectations are within reason, hence the risk for disappointment will not be too high 😉 I'm looking forward to the new sim, and I'll get it on day 1. But I'll keep my 2020 installation until I'm sure I can use all my favourite addons.

Already confirmed due to the new lighting engine and there has been no evidence of them in any of the trailers/screenshots.

With an eye toward the 2024 future, we have quite a bit of stuff going on at PMDG right now. As you likely have heard me mention, we went through a bit of a hiring binge in 2023, and the trees planted in that orchard are beginning to show fruit. We have a new airplane project that we haven't told you about that entered development in early 2024 and it is beginning to take shape nicely. We have changed a number of techniques to increase the detail level of the outside of the airplane in order to capitalize on the new walk-around features embraced by MSFS 2024, for example- and this will likely prove to be a very interesting new gameplay feature for simmers- especially those who genuinely enjoy walking around the airplane and preflighting as you would if you flew with me in the real world.

Looks like some real-world pilots do indeed walk around their aircraft. Who'd have thought. 😂

I look forward to dabbling in the new version.  Very recently I've been realizing I would like to do some GA or at least lower flying as I don't ever do this having become glued to A Pilot's Life and Self Loading Cargo which are air carrier oriented.   Perhaps the new missions or roles will fit the bill in some ways, give me something other than what I do now.  I'm intimately familiar with wildfire and am thinking that might be cool to dabble in that role as well as medical transport as I was a trauma RN for years and did some helicopter and fixed wing transports.  I have always been someone who has to have some 'purpose' associated with the activity.  I rarely just go riding on my motorcycle for fun though I immensely enjoy riding, I have to do something like run an errand or what have you.  For flight simulation, I have to have each flight scored to have meaning.  When I play golf and I am an avid golfer I have to have some goal, or a competitive bet, or what have you.  This I guess is the gamer in me.

Def will keep 2020 alive at least for awhile as I get so much out the scoring pieces in APL and SLC.  If n when they and my 4 planes port over as required then will probably say bye bye to 2020, so I predict it will be about a year or less but who knows.

Do we know the install size of the various editions of 2024 yet?

I'm actually hoping 2024 brings in enough of a substitute for GSX that I can dispense with GSX as I'm not happy with its trajectory of late especially.  Goofy startup issues frequent my use of it.  The dev told me I should not post here for support, so I posted on FSDT's forum some 5 days ago now for this start up problem to which a few others concurred and no response from the dev so far.  Bless him for developing GSX it is a really challenging addon I am clear on that and I think he's done probably the best anyone could have w/o full control like Asobo would have.   And I don't need all of what GSX does, just a few of the basic features.  Could care less about clunky animations walking into PMDG birds and tanking performance while they're at it.

Before we can even talk about PCL, we need airport lighting that isn't on all the time.  Still not sure why that it is an issue in the sim.  I hope to see airport lighting based on ambient light and IFR conditions. Yes, PCL also would be nice but they have to get the basics fixed first..like the lights actually being off sometimes😄.

I think live WX will still be disappointing but will be happy to be proven wrong.  We still do not have proper Thunderstorms/CB's in a flight sim and hope this is resolved along with other things like visibility, better stratiform layers, etc...

Lately its been fine then again I've come home from work and mostly everyone has already updated. We all know day 1 its going to be horrible.

It works fine no mater when it is. This is due to them reworking how their servers handle the load so no, we don't know for sure that day 1 will be horrible.
