Flying over Germany always ruins everything...

Featured Replies

Pretty much since the start of MSFS2020, I've been unable to fly to, or even overfly Germany. Doing so causes my sim to grind to a halt, and usually the performance never comes back.

Flying in Scandinavia, the UK, France and Spain or Netherlands is fine. But as soon as I spend any amount of time in Germany, or Austria, Switzerland or even eastern Belgium, my frame rate starts dropping and I get really bad stutters.

This happened on my old PC (no slouch either, with a 3080 card) and now on my current 7800X3D system with a 4090. As an example, my frame rate dropped to between 4-12FPS on a flight from EHAM-LGAV shortly after I got my new system. I had to abandon a flight from EGLL to OMDB somewhere over Eastern Europe because my FPS tanked to just a couple of frames.

I can happily fly around New York City, Los Angeles, London or any other dense scenery areas in other parts of the world. I can fly transoceanic flights or multi-sector flights across the US, but I can never fly anywhere near Germany without the sim performance dying on me.

I've tried a lot of different things including;

  • Removing all add-ons unrelated to my current flight from the Community folder,
  • Unistalling the Germany/Austria/Switzerland related Word Updates,
  • Flying without any add-on traffic,
  • Reducing my TLOD to silly levels (50-100) in advance of approaching Germany,

...but none of this seems to help.

I think I've seen other people mention this issue in the past, but it can't be universal otherwise lots of people would have been up-in-arms about it. Has anyone got a solution for me?

No such issues on my side. I constantly fly from or to germany (EDDM, EDDF, EDDS, EDNY, EDJA,....) and have zero issues with the region (all Worls updates installed).

If you've completely replaced your PC and the problem is the same, maybe its comms related? Have you tried a VPN?

This thread is already a few months old, but you are not the only one who has problems over Western Europe and Germany in particular. It wasn't so extreme that the FPS was in the single digits for me, but there was a time when I noticed lower FPS and higher system utilization over Germany, but lately it hasn't been a problem for me (at least as far as I would have noticed).

I have never had any issues with frames in any part of Germany, Austria, or Switzerland, and I have a rather modest system. I can fly over Frankfurt, Munich, Vienna, or Zurich with photogrammetry and even Google add-on scenery downloaded from the .to site, and everything is fine. Except for the clouds and terrain textures (Ultra), most of my sliders are at "High." Are your sliders all maxed out? If so, try moving them a bit to the left and see what happens.

Any attempt to stretch fuel is guaranteed to increase headwinds

No problem with the fps here, but when I fly on german areas it seems that the CPU temps (5900x) are going much higher than in the US.

Missing the PMDG DC6 in MSFS 2024 (she's here, but...).

No issues here too. I flyers a lot to/from Frankfurt and sometimes to Munich.

Never had any issues.  Didn't even know it was a thing.

As I fly mostly in/out of Germany without issues, I have no idea what your problem is, except: I deleted City Update 1, because it gives me stutters when approaching the airports surrounded by photogrammetry, especially at EDDK. But it didn't affect performance when simply overflying the areas. Might not help you, but I thought I'd post it anyways.

@Redge Have you tried it without rolling cache?  Have you cleared your DirectX cache?  Are your video drivers up to date?

I have a pretty similar MSFS system (7800X3D+4090).  I have all the world updates installed, PSXT traffic with a full set of models from FSTraffic, AIG, and FSLTL, and weather via ActiveSky.  I have rolling cache disabled.  I use Addon linker to only load the airports I'm using during any particular leg.  I've flown three trans-Germany flights (EDDB to LOWS, EDDF to LSGG, and EDDS to LIMJ) in the last week, and have not seen anything like the slowdowns you describe.

Thanks for the suggestion @Bob Scott. I do have it enabled and come to think of it, in the past I cleared some strange stutters in Nebraska (specifically) by getting clearing the rolling cache (but leaving it enabled). I’ll give it a go and report back if it solves my issues.

No issues in Germany for me and I am flying there quite a lot since the recent world update.  The only place that hits my performance is Cologne, though I know that relates to an addon I am using, but I like it enough to live with the performance.  Even Berlin with Aerosoft's brandenburg and Prealsoft's Berlin Landmarks don't cause any issues at all.

It seems odd that your system seems to perform everywhere except Germany, Austria and Switzerland though and the rolling cache could be one culprit. i would certainly delete that and turn it off along with deleting your shader cache and DX caches.  Here is a useful tool to clean your caches:

 https://flightsim.to/file/65064/fps-4-msfs-simple-fps-tweak-tool

I would also run the Windows disk cleanup tool and ensure that all my drivers are up to date.

The only other thing I can think of is that you are using an addon that is affecting it (it may not even be an addon for that area).

I have a similar issue, buttery smooth over the US of A, yet stuttering over the UK, which is a pain as I live in the you UK.

I have the same problem. And not only with Germany. Almost all of Europe, from Belgium to Poland. I have a 7800x3d and a 4070S, before that I had an i7-9700F and a 2070, but the new system did not solve anything for me. FPS with FG is stable at 60, but in this area there is a sharp increase in the load on the processor and FPS drops to 57-58, which seems okay, but this causes annoying stuttering. I don't fly there anymore. My EAST and America and beloved Ukraine
