Welp, I had been waiting for the FSLabs NEOs but given how happy I've been with Fenix, I'll stick with them. On top of the product, I like the fact that they actually engage and communicate with their customers. That alone will have me skipping the FSLab NEOs as that company can't seem to communicate to save their lives.  

Hopefully Fenix tackles the A330 next! Love what they are doing and how they go about it.

Typo on my part, sorry.  That should have read "I don't see why you WOULD be asking..." because you don't need to tilt up while on the runway.  The precip is falling into your radar beam.  No need to look up.  The sim radar will work just fine on rotation and climb.  It'll be ok on descent too for lower weather, once you get within about 10k feet of the precip core of a storm (give or take, depending on your distance from it.). It'll be fine in cruise too, for wx reaching your altitude.  There's only the one specific case where it would struggle, where you couldn't force it to look down well below you before a descent at weather that is still pretty low-topped but intensifying rapidly.  But that's not an everyday case, and probably not represented well in the sim anyway so the radar depiction of it doesn't really matter.

I've never seen much point in obsessing over the details of simulated radar, when the simulated weather itself isn't realistic.  What's the point of having an accurately working radar, when the weather it will depict wouldn't create a realistic radar return? 

Convection is very complex.  NOAA uses literal supercomputers to model it - imprecisely.  Your desktop game is never going to create convection accurately.  But people seem to want to play the "stay out of the red" game, and so sure, the asobo radar is fine for that.  In most cases, it will resemble what you'd see on an auto tilt/gain modern system.  The shapes and behavior of the weather just won't be correct, because they'll never be correct on a desktop.

I had to dig into some of my docs.  Airbus recommends the following (manual) tilt adjustments:

- Takeoff: 4° UP
- Climb: negative tilt to keep ground returns on top of ND
- Cruise: the following settings to keep ground returns on top of ND ...

Range 320: 1 DN

Range 160: 1.5 DN
Range 80: 3.5 DN
Range 40: 6 DN- Descent:

Above FL150 - Every 10 000 ft: Adjust tilt upward to maintain ground returns on top of ND (~ +1°/10.000 ft)


Below FL150 - Every 5 000 ft: Adjust tilt upward to maintain ground returns on top of ND (~ +1°/5.000 ft)
- Approach: 4° UP

 

Of course, as always, your company's SOPs have priority over anything else.
While company SOP's are important, be aware they may not always be in accordance with the aircraft manufacturer's recommendations. SOP's are often based upon the personal opinion of whoever is running the train-set.

Well, this is a video game, there's no "practical significance" to anything here, right?  But it certainly will allow you to stay out of the heavier rain which would potentially indicate convection if it really existed in the sim... So from a simulation standpoint, I can see the point. 

Those recommended tilt settings are cute.  They're also dependent on both the radar internals being calibrated correctly, and the dish being mounted with exactly zero angular error.  Neither thing will ever be true.  So you can throw them right out the window. 

There are real world, simple techniques to manage tilt if you have to, that don't involve arbitrary numbers since they're not useful in reality.  As far as the sim radar, just pretend your airline isn't a ratty low cost carrier and has actually sprung for a modern system with automation, and it'll do just fine.  😉

@Aamir if you are monitoring this thread, based on this update from Fenix, I am wondering if all traces of ProSim code will be removed from all versions of the Fenix code (CEO, NEO, Sharklets, IAE, etc) when it's finally released.  I am just curious, because removing all traces of ProSim code is a huge undertaking and refactoring (but maybe a necessary one). Thanks in advance if you reply to this!

I seem to remember Aamir saying a while back that a lot of Prosim code had been replaced. Maybe that's an on-going thing with the ceo's.
