I am struggling to see the need to transition to 2024....

For the time being, at present it looks that there are still way too many fans of MSFSFS2020, as everybody can see in the Steam charts (I don't have a similar source for the MS Store version, by the way, but the Steam charts offer a very good statistical sample of what's happening in real life):

MSFS2020:

MSFS2024:

https://steamdb.info/app/2537590/charts/

Could it be something all these people are missing?.

No, not really.

Now, I admit this has a collection bias favoring the airliner crowd.

Since the Navigraph survey, I've run a few informal data collections exercises. What I do is filter Volanta on MSFS and MSFS24 users. I wish I could scrape it consistently. At any rate, the Navigraph 2:1 in a lot of ways was kind. During the Atlanta "Have a Coke and Smile" event on 4/19 the ratio was 3:1 in favor of 2020. I took the collection during the middle of the event.

One of the VAs I am in ran a poll and 2020 again won by a 3:1 margin.

And anecdotal evidence on these forums, Reddits and various Discords show the same pattern. 2020 is still preferred by a lot of simmers.

That said, I don't think 6 months in it is an indication of 2024 as an abject failure. It's a transition to a new platform and people are going to move over at their own pace. I also joke that right now for airliners 2024 is really an Airbus simulator with only one decent Boeing plane in 2024: the new -200. The Asobo Max is not a good effort effort at all.

That is not counting a lot of utilities people may depend on not having 2024 versions. I miss Flow and it's a draw for me to stay in 2020.

I don't think that gap begins to close until PMDG brings over the 737 line to 2024. And even then, some people are going to balk at paying ANY upgrade fee for them.

Which is a long way of saying I wouldn't be surprised if the Navigraph survey is much different. Especially if PMDG doesn't ship until the end of the year, if at all.

It's just as stable as 2020, and it has more realistic flight model, ground physics, rotating beacons finally work (broken since 2020), and the lighting/atmosphere is vastly more realistic than 2020.

  • Perfectly stable on my machine - never had a WASM crash, never had a CTD. To the OP: fly whatever sim you like best and works for you 👍

This will generate a myriad of responses.  But from my experience with MSFS2024, I've enjoyed every minute of the switch from the old platform.   I now have a whole suite of hi-def aircraft and s

At one point we were getting so many new notices come out all the time it was beyond a joke, the last straw for me is when they actually issued a crew notice about ..crew notices.

Lol, ain't that the truth. It's bad enough trying to get people to read important notices. Throw trash at them and they won't read them at all. Talk about the negative conditioning🤣

Like Pete said. Skip and move on.

If everyone just ignored these "I brushed my teeth today" threads they would sink quickly to the second page.  I'd then say hallelujiah.  Or however it's spelled.

Have not purchased MSFS2025.

My initial understand was that MSFS2020 would have a 10 year run for Updates and Support.

Based on Microsoft’s recommended PC specifications for MSFS2025 I would need a new $5000 (USD) PC.
Currently I have 2 PCs that do not meet the MSFS2025 recommended specifications.

All my wonderful MSFS2020 "working great" Add-ons have not been updated for MSFS2025.

Your initial understanding was incorrect. MS committed to the FS platform, NOT to v2020.

I was able to fly v2024 on Medium-High on a 2018 Ryzen 2700x with a 2070, 64GB and an NVME with no problems. It looked better than X-Plane 12 and gave higher FPS at similar graphics levels.

Now that I have a 5600x with a 4070, 64GB and NVME, it's cracking right along on High settings. That was about $1500-ish, all in.

///

I have a broad selection of high quality v2020 add-ons that have been updated for Compatibility with v2024, mostly for free.

A few are now even Native, and except for the iniBuilds A300, were also free upgrades (and the iB was a reasonable $10 fee for a very well regarded addon).

Yes, it's disappointing that PMDG haven't gotten their stuff together, but there are so many other rather great add-ons for v2024 (even several Defaults) that I barely even miss them.

///

So not sure what you're on about - there's nothing forcing you to stay on v2020, or forcing you to move to v2024.

Be happy with whatever version suits you best.

Wait I am confused.

The MS24 MP has 2020 items, so I can download my old scenery / planes? I was under the impression that I could only download those items that showed up as MS24 upgrades.

Yes, there are MP items that are marked as v2020 that can be used in v2024.

In fairness, MS made a hash of the transition, so confusion is understandable.

I actually have both on my system but, with my dozens and dozens and dozens of add ons, Ive been sticking with 2020.

I do 95% of my flight in the flight levels.... any reason to switch? Especially now that chaseplane is out... I am thinking no way!

Since you have both sims installed (as I do), you can choose every day what you want to fly.. No need to "switch" 😉

Just fly what you like!    As for me, I just started up 2020, for the first time in months and was reminded of why I prefer 2024  🙂  Personal preference.. Ford vs Chevy 😊

I don't see any quotes in there from Jorge or Seb.

There are multiple in-person interviews with them where they explain the "10 year" commitment.

Easiest to find on FSElite, IIRC. And the videos of them speaking at or being interviewed in various FS events.

I still have both installed and use both depending on what I'm flying.  Some of the things I like about 2024 are the lighting engine and the controller profiles.  With my hardware I definitely noticed the lighting especially at dawn/dusk times and it just, to me, looks better than 2020 but that may depend on hardware and settings.

I'm probably going to get flak for liking the controller profiles but let me explain.  I will absolutely agree it's clunky and frustrating at times to set up.  There's two different places to set axis sensitivity and they seem to be different from each other for example.  What I like about it is the part where we can actually assign profiles to planes similar to Xplane.  So now when I go fly a C172 after having just flown an Airbus all I have to do is swap out physical attachments on my Bravo but I don't have to remember to go change 3-4 controller profiles to make sure I have keybinds for the correct aircraft.  Sure it could definitely be better, but at least we have it now.

One thing I find interesting is that I've now watched many flight videos that are using fs2024 and I don't think I would really know it is fs2024 if it didn't say so in the title and description. As I look for the differences, I do see some things that look better, but nothing I find eye-popping to the point where I feel I need to switch right now. It doesn't seem to correspond to the narrative that the visuals are a night and day difference. I'm sure they are improved, but more subtle than dramatic. Also, the streamers will be saying how great 2024 is while their pushback spins them around in circles and AI aircraft are doing all kinds crazy things and, supposedly, get automatically turned back on after being turned off. I sense there are still a lot of bugs to be ironed out.  I will eventually as development for 2020 will end and MS/Asobo will pull the plug on the 2020 servers at some point.

I have to disagree with your statement that the scenery improvement from MS2020 to MS2024 is subtle and not dramatic -- are you basing your conclusion entirely on videos?  Comparisons from altitude (say, above a few hundred feet AGL) may not show much difference, but at anywhere close to ground level the change, to me at any rate, is mind-blowing. MS2024 radically alters the sense of immersion, and for the first time in any flight simulator truly looks like the real world, with real trees, foliage, rock faces, etc. In addition, the walk-around feature in the newer sim makes one's experience even more realistic. Try it and see for yourself.
