I am struggling to see the need to transition to 2024....

Featured Replies

Did a flight with the PMDG 772ER at dusk yesterday.... I mean, I cannot imagine the sim looking any better. Is there a drastic difference? I actually have both on my system but, with my dozens and dozens and dozens of add ons, Ive been sticking with 2020.

I do 95% of my flight in the flight levels.... any reason to switch? Especially now that chaseplane is out... I am thinking no way!

It's just as stable as 2020, and it has more realistic flight model, ground physics, rotating beacons finally work (broken since 2020), and the lighting/atmosphere is vastly more realistic than 2020.

  • Perfectly stable on my machine - never had a WASM crash, never had a CTD. To the OP: fly whatever sim you like best and works for you 👍

This will generate a myriad of responses.  But from my experience with MSFS2024, I've enjoyed every minute of the switch from the old platform.

I now have a whole suite of hi-def aircraft and sceneries working smoothly in 2024.  From the reduction in load times to the ray tracing to super smooth performance, everything looks incredible.

Now this isn't to say that 2020 doesn't look great, it does.  I just love the extra bells and whistles that come with 2024.  I also like the streaming in and the controls configs that can be assigned to individual aircraft, just works well for me.

Chaseplane, Flow Pro and other products are on their way, so if they mean alot to you, perhaps wait until they are 2024 compatible.

Happy flights mate.

2024 simmers can enjoy a better scenery for GA flights. But there is still so many issues. It's not stable. Just read the official forums, and all the issues getting reported.

I would just second exactly what Ryan wrote above. 2024 is not solid and stable. I have completed four 8 to 10 hour flights in the 772 all of them butter smooth and not a single problem. All that said, if you are happy with 2020 there is no need to move, it is not going to be night and day, but 2024 is definitely a step forward.

Well this is my situation as well.  With Active Sky, Atmos and Accu Season 2020 looks great to me especially during golden hour at dawn and dusk climbing through a with a layer of convective cumulus in the PMDG 737 or the Fenix A320 it is hard to imagine how the looks could be improved upon.  I have a new 9800X3D CPU paired a with a 4090 GPU so I have the tech - but is there a killer new feature in 2024 that makes a switch compelling?  In all the 2024 vids I have viewed there doesn't seem to be one.

What will eventually kill 2020 will be the lack of development of add-ons (aircraft, sceneries, etc) once 2024 has its bugs ironed out. If 2020 is anything to go by we have, possibly, a year to go.

On the other hand...look at how many are still using FSX and P3D. It all really depends on what you're looking for in your sim.

There is no need to transition to 2024.  MSFS2020 is still great for the time being.  However, like others above have said, 2024 is just a bit nicer. For me, much faster startup, better graphics,  better ground and in air handling, better controls, taylored for each aircraft. Better sky and land color. Better performance in VR.  And is just as stable as 2020. At least it is for me.  I think most people that suffer 2024 issues, are using incompatable addons or port overs from 2020.

MSFS 2024 has been my main sim for months now and having a great time with it,  as most of my favourite planes are there now, but I still go back to 2020 for the PMDG 777ER,  but that too should be available in 2024 in a month or so.

I am looking forward for Chaseplane in MSFS2024.  Hopefully, its not too far way.

I'm 90% in 2024 flying the Fenix, HOWEVER when I do fly the 777 in 2020 I have a similar experience, so I am able to see the beauty in both still.

I guess it depends on the level of demand of each one. I would be currently with 2020 if the main thread problem won't kill my gaming experience but as you can read there are people very happy with 2024.

For me the better performance on my system makes 2024 the only one when I fly MFS. But 2024 is not stable no matter how much it is preached here, I only use two addons A2A and realturb so I don't think it's my addons that are the problem, but there are still many bugs that spoil a lot the immersion, LOD, PG, AI etc and more serious bugs with vram that go as far as producing even CDT.

There is also nothing to stop you from having both simulators installed on your system and making a transition little by little and see for yourself if it's really worth it, you have a very cheap play pass trial to try.

Totally agree.  Very stable now after SU1.  2024 is great and well said mate.

YMMV.

Yes, Greazer is being obnoxious with the constant 2024 bashing but, well, if you're using 2024 in VR, you're probably gonna crash at some point. For me, it's any time I try to change a setting and forget to drop out of VR first. It crashes when I try to exit the settings screen.

Doesn't mean I don't enjoy it, but it does mean I acknowledge there's a lot of work yet to be done on it.

Or, honestly just stick with 2020.  No one says you have to switch!  You do you!

You and I are in the same situation.  I too had been looking for a killer new feature, a compelling reason to make the change but I had not found one.  However, I came to the conclusion that this is not the right approach for making a decision so this is my approach:

  • Regardless of industry, when it comes to new releases of applications, the direction is forward.  Financially, supporting multiple versions of the same application/functionality is not feasible.  Support for the older version is eventually discontinued.  The open question is the "when" and not the "if".

  • Addon developers are in the same situation as Microsoft/Asobo.  They cannot continue supporting multiple versions of the same A/C and they cannot afford to develop applications for platform whose support will most probably be discontinued at some point.  For example, PMDG is already heading in this direction.  The revamped/enhanced B737-NGX and the B747 variants will only be available in MSFS 2024 and I have no doubt other vendors will follow.

  • I understand that MSFS 2024 was a train wreck when it was released but reading the various posts, the situation seems to have improved significantly.  What stands out for me in the various posts is the apparent superiority of flight models, the more realistic handling of aircraft in the air and on the ground, and their overall look and feel.  As someone who is interested in aviation and in the accuracy/realism of A/C behavior, I have always felt, and people whose opinions count heavily in my decision making have backed me up on this (this forum and others), the MSFS 2020 atmospherics are inadequate (I am being polite).  I continue to fly through heavy weather and the A/C flies as if it's a summer day with calm winds.

Bottom line...for the above reasons, I suggest that you focus on the "when" and forget the "if".....and you have plenty of time to make a decision.
