Interesting....Boeing using MSFS as training platform

Featured Replies

Looks like it's based off 2020, not 2024, the generic jetways are not the glass 2024 ones.

Makes sense, that platform is more stable at the moment, and not as online connected.

Funny how people were literally accusing PMDG of making this up as an excuse for delaying their MAX in MSFS...

Well, PMDG doesn't need excuses to delay things, they do it cheerfully without excuses all the time.

Also, are we sure that PMDG is involved in this? Did they make a statement? I know they have said they were doing something for Boeing, but was this it?

For me the best aspect in this new partnership is the fact that it adds a longterm solid funding PLUS for MSFS - which is extremely important having beancounters with a 30% profit expectation behind you.

doing a quick read, it sounds like it's just for cockpit procedure training/practice.

Boeing using MSFS and MS tech for cockpit procedure training is cool.

This should be a big improvement, there is a bit of software which is used in the briefing room and training departments which I believe is called something like the desktop training tool.

Even as a flight sim enthusiast I find it an incredibly dry and boring  software to use, so MSFS should prove to be a lot more entertaining….even game like in comparison you could say 😉

Yep, CAE has long been delivering their Simfinity line of desktop training tools.

They don't subsitute a full flight simulator but are excellent procedure trainers.

Well, my airline used FSX during training sessions. It was never used for actual training but just as a tool to explain different procedures. Funny enough FSX graphically was more impressive than CAE's software.

And I'm not overly shocked by this announcement. Despite performance issues, the MSFS series is a very impressive piece of software, and I’m glad to see non-gamers adopting ans scaling the platform.

While MSFS2024 has excellent graphics and ASOBO is working hard on improvements we need to understand that what is clear at the moment it might be used as a CBT/VAPT for familiarization. At the present time, I really don't see any of the ASOBO, PMDG or Ifly738 airplanes to be a candidate for a real CBT. There are lots of things that need to be improved, perhaps for familiarization with the cockpit switches and some geographic locations. Two developers were approved as a CBT by aviation authorities, AEROWINX and LEVEL D 767. PMDG was entertaining the idea but for some reason (bugs) they didn't make it.
The bottom line is that ASOBO has a good potential to shine in this aspect and we can expect more fine tuning.

747 Captain for the last 39 years, and still learning.

Very cool!

This is a much more complex deployment than a license of MSFS. Seems like a super set of the sim:

support for offline, online, Mac OS, iPad(!), and of course, PC.

A quick skim doesn’t seem to indicate support for actually flying (yet), but cold n dark to ready for takeoff, and then post landing procedures.

I'm sure there’s a Crawl, Walk, Run philosophy in action here.

it'll be great to see how this evolves and what effects/benefits might eventually pertain to us!

A huge improvement over the equipment we had in the early 80s for B737 and A300 - a procedural trainer made out of wood and paper. It worked though. Also cheap.

Indeed, we can't comment on this in any way or form.

Still don’t know if PMDG is involved, saying we can’t comment doesn’t really make it clear. That guy famously says whatever on the forums, just like he did at Aerosoft

But whatever, if they are good for them and for the flight sim community.  I suppose eventually an official announcement will be made with more details.

Yup!, they are likely using the cloud-hosted version of MSFS (and also likely their own space on Azure) so that it can be used on iPads/Mac/etc, even probably PCs?

most of the real life pilots at Avsim prefer MSFS as their primary civillian flight simulator, at least this is what I notice, based on the sheer activity of the MSFS forum here at Avsim.

Actual pilots are most likely doing the same as sim only pilots, going where their time, interests, and wallet allows them to go.

I am a retired military and civilian aviator, and I fly FSX and DCS.

Why? For FSX, familiarity, ability to create scenery and repaints, and it meets my needs for scenery detail FX & RW).

DCS? It's fun, dynamic, detailed and free ($).

The reason that MSFS is dominating the forums is that it is also dominating the sales market and user counts.

I'll purchase MSFS eventually, but not today. Maybe there will be a good Black Friday sale?

Chances are this is in a segmented cloud space as well, probably with direct connects so they aren't leveraging the i-net for transport.

Very cool for MSFS team indeed.  Commercial projects like this can really help drive innovation in the consumer space and vice versa.  Great win-win opportunity.

Have a Wonderful Day
