Looks Like I'll Return to 2020

Many people are using the Dynamic Setting feature improperly.

Well when a new feature is released with next to no information on how it works exactly then yes, that'll happen. We had to figure it out for ourselves which led to confusion and misinformation which quickly spreads, same with a lot of other settings actually where it's guesswork.

Thanks for the explanation though, appreciated for those that use it.

Because it isn’t a problem. It’s one of the things that makes 2024 run better than 2020. They unload the stuff you’re not currently looking at to make the sim run better.

"then I will return to 2020."

Good choice IMO 👍

Imagine saying 2024 looks cartoonish compared to 2020, when 2020 has 2D sprites for trees.

Jumping back in as one of the 'cartoonish' commenters - That's perhaps not the best word, its not looney toons its more Color Saturated I'd say, like the bright colors are brighter, almost unnaturally so they pop more, but that's not realistic, even if it looks good in screenshots and videos. 2020 looks more faded, weathered, dare I say greyed - but that matches reality, especially in overcast or rainy conditions.

Like the Whites are really White, the Green of the trees is REALLY green, not the darker, muted green that you'd expect a non-tropical forest. Its like a filter has been applied to make the game 'pop' more.

I'll try and grab some screenshots tonight. This is my experience anyway, and I assume there's setting to adjust to correct for this.

Also - I have Dynamic Settings on, and set to 30, TLOD 200 and most of the rest of the settings between high and ultra. Framerate not really an issue. Going to try cranking up TLOD and OLOD.

I wonder how monitor affects the color issue - I'm embarrassed to say I use an older Samsung 42" HDTV as a monitor 😐 I know refresh rate is lower than the current standard expectations, but it hasn't given me any issues in the past. I'm well aware everything looks better on newer screens.

The simple adjustment is NVCP's Digital Vibrance, where you can easily dial back color saturation to the point of black and white if you so desire, and everything in between.  I'm set at 44 (default is 50%).  And of course, minor adjustments in contrast, gamma, brightness.  I do use HDR as well.

Not cranking the settings to something your system can't handle 😄 I would wager the issues people are having are related to what SeedyL posted above... people are using Dynamic Settings since it's turned on out of the box, but they set the framerate target to 60fps because they don't understand how it works, and then the clouds look "cartoonish" because they aren't fully rendered because their system can't sustain 60fps under many circumstances.

I'm also guessing folks turn on frame gen with these 40 and 50 series cards, but I'll wager the target framerate does not take frame generation into account, so that 90FPS people see is actually 45, and if the target is set to 60... well, that is why things look like a melted mess.

Maybe more people should use the Nvidia app and have it control their settings... I've found the app suggests settings on the conservative side for my 3090, but even those conservative settings should look better than what some folks are describing.

EXACTLY.  Dynamic Settings just kills off quality for performance.  It's not rocket surgery to understand this but I guess Asobo didn't really explain the feature very well.

NVCP's Digital Vibrance

Wow OK I had no idea this was even a thing - I've noticed it in other games as well, and never though it would be some NVidia thing, always assumed it was just a design choice by the developers. Will try tonight!

I have not tweaked anything, and MSFS 2024 looks great on my Asus 24" monitor.

Alot depends on your screen so I have Digital Vibrance at 54% without HDR.  Just a 1% change can be the difference.

Also, I got my 32" LG curved gaming screen at Walmart for $150.

minimum acceptable frame rat

Maybe MS could change the wording then? Because if I remember correctly, it’s labeled “max frame rate”.

Yes there is a Max and also a Min for the Dynamic setting.  Click the little dropdown arrow.

And remember the Max is before FG is applied. So 45 x 2X FG = 90 fps.

Max Frame Rate is a different setting entirely and is not related to Dynamic Settings.

Think of it this way: Max Frame Rate sets an upper limit on how many frames per second the sim will render. Dynamic Settings sets the floor below which the sim will automatically reduce graphical quality so that your frame rate stays above the specified value.

You can also achieve the same de-saturation by adjusting your monitor controls.

See my post above. There is only one value for Dynamic Settings (even if you expand the dropdown menu). Max Frame Rate is a different setting entirely.

I don’t use Dynamic, but IMHO Max Frame Rate is a VERY important setting especially if one experiences low resolution textures (aka blurries).  The objective should be to set this value so that you don’t peg CPU or GPU at 95-100% … need to leave some headroom to allow other processing to occur and not be delayed by too aggressive Max Frame Rate that one’s system simply can’t handle.

As I keep pointing out, folks need to stop chasing FPS and relax and spend some quality time with better visuals 🙂

Sure, VR needs higher FPS or you need to stop moving your head so rapidly 😉

I need to open a coffee shop and call it “FPS juice” … I’d make a fortune!

For me the two settings are related.  😏
