Happier at 2560x1440

This probably sounds - IS - dumb on my part, but I've discovered that with my 10900K and 3060 12GB card (and 32GB RAM) both MSFS2024 and that other sim that starts with an X just run so much smoother.

I've been simming since 1998 and was always "mainthread limited" and somehow never really understood how both sims could LOOK and ACT like they were running in 3840 "most" of the time, but that it would lead to many of my stutters when panning or just flying.

It took running in developer mode and really watching the CPU and GPU (and the rendering times in the other sim) to understand this.

It's been about a week at 2560 now and both sims are just so much better, so far at least.

Now....if someone has some "tweaks" or an affinity mask for a .cfg file that will allow me to run at 3840....just kidding. :)

But if you're a bit on the silly side and haven't experimented with lowering settings to achieve smoothness, perhaps give it a shot.

3,686,400 pixels 16:9 1440p

8,294,400 pixels 16:9 4K

4K has over twice the pixels than 1440p. But probably something like only 25% fps reduction in 4K compared to 1440p (I'm guessing).

My simple guess is: with 1440p you dont run any longer in VRAM limit, hence the better performance. So really no surprise here...

What was your average VRAM usage in 4k and what is it now in 1440p?

My 3070 8GB did not turn out to be enough with 2024 even at 1080p because I fly using 3rd party airliners and airports and VRAM insufficiency was always the problem. I upgraded to a 3090 with 24GB VRAM and haven't looked back since. I can now run all graphics settings on High/Ultra and still stay below ~16 GB of VRAM.

I've been running triple screens for a couple of years (9700k , 2080s). All screens at 1080p is pretty smooth but objects in the distance are blurry and text on cockpit screens is horrible. Middle screen at 2k and outer two at 1080 is ok for simple ga aircraft and not too complex stuff.

Since a couple of weeks my instruments are running on an ultra wide connected to a laptop with Air manager and GlassOut providing all instruments, screens and gauges. I've created an outside view for the triple screens and this allows me to enjoy the environment, have steady 30fps and have all instruments in front of me.

I must admit that running 1080 on a 4k display is not ideal. Somehow my old 1080 native screen looked sharper.

4 k is a no go for me and fries my GPU/CPU. My 2080s is 7 years old but with current prices I guess this will be my flying experience for at least a couple of years.

1920x1080 resolution with 1.5x DSR on my PC is equivalent to 2880x1620. Performance is excellent at the moment with my 12GB RTX 4070 Super GPU, with smooth framerates (I do not check or limit the figures), and very few stutters. The latter have definitely improved with the SU5.1 update.

Will it look bad if you run a resolution that is NOT your display's native resolution? Or is that no longer a problem these days

Not sure, I’ve always heard that too - but am using our living room Samsung 4K TV (60hz) as my monitor and though I can run at 4K the color looks off and my little 3060 is screaming (and it stutters more).

I sit ~30cm from a 32” 4K screen, wish I could go down to 1440 but the resolution looks bad at that distance

I have an i7-1100K, 3080 and 32GB ram and honestly, going from 4K back down to 1080P has changed everything for me. After a few hours I didn't even recognize the lost resolution because I was so happy I could push the sliders and the LOD's MUCH higher than I ever could on 4K. Another drastic change for me was finally switching over to Windows 11 and essentially starting from scratch. Previously, I had years of files of both 2020 and 2024 and I believe doing a fresh start along with dropping in resolution finally gives me the sim experience I've been wanting. No hassles. Any plane. Any city. All the traffic. It just works now.

I would love to know more how you set this up: nvidia control panel or the app or how? Other settings to go with it? Thank you in advance.

I run double screen 2k (1440p), both are 32" 16:9. great performance. (I use Nvidia surround because even in Frame Generation, both screens are 1440p AND both are the same double FPS provided by frame generation. You don't lose Frame Generation when moving mouse pointer from one screen to the other when using Nvid Surround. (I use the bezel correction value of 59 in the Surround setup screen). (2560x2)+59 = 5179x1440.
