Power Check
Interesting that the performance is, yes, similar to a normally aspirated aircraft BUT the cfg file clearly shows its turbocharged in the engine and performance text areas! - performance="Maximum Speed\t\n213 kts\t245 mph\t394 kmh\n\nCruise Speed\t\n170 kts\t196 mph\t315 kmh\n\nEngine\t\nTurbo charged TIO-540-C1A\t250hp\n And the engine shows turbocharged=1 (true) with a critical altitude of 22000. Either way, something doesnt feel 'right' with it. Mithras, for info the POH I have from the web shows run-up carried out at 1500rpm for feathering (max 500rpm drop) and 2200rpm to exercise prop (max 300 rpm drop) and mags. mag drop will be the usual tiny FSX 50rpm drop on both mags.

C404 Magneto Check
Mag drop simulation in FSX is only about 50rpm without some fancy background programming by the addon developer. A2A do it better with accusim. All Carenado/Alabeo stuff I have is the same as they use the default FSX programming.

Power Check
After staring into the aircraft.cfg file, noticed the min governed speed for the prop is 1900 rpm, so unless you carry out a power check over this, you wont see much. Not too sure this value is correct but cant find any contrary gen yet. Also not sure the MP is right. Its a turbo engine, yes? My Aztec F 250 POH shows a 34" turbo cruise at 2400 rpm. Not sure this truck will do that unless its very low! Also have a warning note saying not to exceed 39.5" below 18,000ft, 37.0" up to 20,000, 34.0" up to 22,000 and 31.0" up to 24,000ft. Setting the max MP to 39.5 in the cfg file results in some pretty fierce acceleration (and noise!). Feels like it needs some mods...

PA23 AZTEC F 250 Released!
Agree with the good comments above, however, the alternator inop lights and gauge (at least for me) are erm, inop and the selector knob has no clickspot. Also the heater/fan switch below it isnt active. Otherwise very happy. Hoping for some repaints (esp G reg) as my painting skills are non-existant! Wish they would tie the side window to a shift-E key combination for accu-feel users (it will work if you click it then shift-E4, but thats extra faff).

RXP 430 fix
Firstly, I havent run the Alabeo exe for installing the RXP stuff - just modify the panel cfg for the vanilla C404. Secondly, its not perfect - the 3D knobs get in the way and still show the original clickspots. Make sure you use the RXP pink hand symbol, not the default FSX white one to activate the knobs etc. I used the RXP panel config utility to add a popup for the 430 as well and generally use that (with my eyesight and the button/text size in the VC viewpoint I find it easier, if a little less 'realistic').

RXP 430 fix
This will overlay the RXP screen in the VC. The button clickspots will also work and just about line up, the knobs are another matter - they are offset above and outboard of the VC ones, but do work. Backup panel.cfg then change the following line in [Vcockpit01] gauge00=CarenadoG430_3D_PAC404!GNS430_nc1, 0, 0,512,256 to gauge00=rxpGNS!GNS430, -26, -12,550,256 (or comment out the original line and add the new one - //gauge00=CarenadoG430_3D_PAC404!GNS430_nc1, 0, 0,512,256 gauge00=rxpGNS!GNS430, -26, -12,550,256 whichever works for you!) If you want to change the GPS popup for the RXP, I have altered [Window01] to [Window01] Background_color=0,0,0 size_mm=512,260 visible=0 ident=10010 window_size= 0.305, 0.235 window_pos= 0.690, 0.040 no_luminous=1 zorder=7 //gauge00=CarenadoG430_3D_PAC404!GNS430_nc1, 0,0,500,266 gauge00=rxpGNS!GNS430, 0,0,512,260 gauge01=PAC404!ToggleCAR430, 64, 0,384, 32 If you have the Saratoga II TC you can use the same method to get the RXP430 in the cockpit with the 530.

Alabeo C404 Titan: Anybody take a chance on it yet?
Hmmm. Actually finding this a nice product. Hand flies well, even engine out. Lands nicely too, just a bit sticky at rotation. The AP is okay if you use the pop up - its real location is horrendous if you only use slew in the VC. I have shoehorned the RXP430 in the panel overwriting the Carabeo original - the positioning needs tweaking to get the display to fit and the buttons work, the knobs dont tie up (otherwise they cant be used) but the click points are close enough to be usable. Finding out it uses quite a lot of xml for stuff was a bonus. I have tweaked the annunciator file to get a few things working right like the alt and hyd warnings. My biggest bugbear is actually the 'EGT' gauge which bears no relation to the tooltip value - the gauge scale of 0-500 doesnt correspond to values of 1250! And I wish they would tie those demist windows in to an FSX exit value so Accufeel could handle the wind/prop noise. Would sound so much better.

Pipersport - Hot,hot, Hot
This is a very nicely modelled addon, especially with the RXP 530 integrated, but am I the only one having temperature issues? Loaded with it running, I get the CHT in the top white area within a matter of a few minutes (like turning on the 530 and setting comm/nav frequencies). After taxy to the runway, its nudging boiling over and the oil temp is also above the green! This with OAT of 56 F (at KRDD using live weather). Starting from cold and dark its a bit more manageable, but still seems very hot by lineup and in flight the gauges read at the top of the green all the time. And am I also alone in wondering why there are 2 comm/nav 1 radios (GNS and the Apollo) and there doesnt seem to be a glide slope indicator on the RMI (only tested at Reading tho').
-
Auto pilot
Autopilot? In a light sport aircraft? Dont think so. It also has only 1 radio (despite 2 being fitted) and there is no way to select the second in the cockpit. This is despite there being entries for 2 nav/radios in the cfg file (but obviously not coded that way in the model!). Any frequency selections on the GNS530 are reflected in the radio below. If you added the autopilot section to the cfg file from another aircraft it would probably work from default keyboard commands tho' - but hardly 'realistic' in this case.

Aerosoft Diamond DA20-100 Katana 4X?
Great addon, with the exception that the engine sound doesnt seem quite 'right' to me. It seems to loop quite obviously on my system so maybe just me. Just about everything can break and needs fixing/maintenance. Preflights are a necessity too. What little systems there are have very comprehensive simulation. Flies very nicely too (handy for a VFR tool!). The 'ownership' can get a little tiresome however, as it does seem to fail more frequently than I would expect IRL (and I am talking about considerate use here, not caning it all the time!)...

VOR Lock and Appr
VOR Loc (Localiser) to allow capture of the localiser course and then APPR prior to intercepting the glide path. You can also select APPR when on an intercept heading for the localiser without selecting Loc mode.

Alabeo Piper Tomahawk released.
Just tried this update - sound issue fixed, instrument lighting fixed (the OBS backlight turned with the compass card - now the whole dial is lit), and the reg issues seem sorted (but I had the aussiex.org fix for that anyway). Dont seem to have seperate panel/nav and radio lighting tho' - the radio knob does nothing but the panel lights up the dials and the transponder. Otherwise its made a brilliant little addon better..
-
Audio Panel
Yes it can, just change the Carenado transponder entry in the panel.cfg VC section to 'rxpGNS!gtx327' and use the same positioning/sizing values. You get all the functionality at the expense of some obvious colour mismatching... Nick T

The Time for a GA has arrived !
Second all the above choices, however, only got the Realair Legacy last week and its magic (I have most of the rest too) - easily the best GA from every aspect BUT deep systems simulation. On the other hand, how about the Aerosoft / Marcel Feldt Diamond Katana 20X? Might not be fast but its beautiful graphicswise and very deep systemswise. Just be aware its a bit needy in the care department (washing, hoovering, checking oil levels..). Almost accusimlike but strangely addictive.

Graphics Question - jaggies
See the Hardware and Software setup guide pinned at the top of this forum. Should help with Image Quality. Delve into the 'fps loss' thread below and follow the links - there has been a lot of discussion regarding AA and AF recently ...

What Orbx PNW airports should I get?
Spend a lot of time flying out of Skagit. Darrington is nice too, but I find the shorts and T-shirts waiting for flights a bit much this time of year - I'm not that hard  ! KORS can be a lot of fun in the wrong aircraft.. Been thinking about Cresswell for a while but still not taken the plunge.

Why is there no 737 in europe ?
Why are there large numbers of Airbus in Europe? Purchase price.. Airbus have nearly always offered cheaper purchase costs than Boeing, but they claw that back with the high cost of spares/support. Boeing have traditionally been more expensive to purchase but that is offset by lower costs of spares/support. Unless you buy very large numbers when the aviation industry is on its knees (post 2001).... And we wont go down the 'government subsidies' avenue, oh no....

An appeal to installer writers
Just an appeal to all the softie's who write auto-installer's for software packages: 'Rant on' - Thank you for making the installation of your greatfully received enhancements to our wonderful hobby BUT PLEASE if you must include a uninstaller can you make it name specific... NOT the general uninstal. I have lost count of the number of times I have tried to uninstal an add-on from several months ago I no longer wish to use, only to have it uninstal the LAST ITEM I installed. If you cannot make it specific to YOUR add-on, please save yourself the bother and don't include one.... 'Rant off' - deep breath, count to three, give up and have a beer (or three..) ;-)

STEC & G530 reset in Flight?
I have had similar problems with the GPS (430 mainly but also 530) and the map display on the G500. After some time they seem to stop updating, not all at the same time. Noticeable on the G500 map, the aircraft symbol stops moving on the route - selecting a different range gets it working again. On the GPS, the NDB or VOR pages will stop updating - I have to resort to turning the 430 or 530 off then back on which fixes it most times. This has only been happening for 3 or 4 days now.Might be I have my traffic settings too high - I turned them up to 50% to get some of the OzX ADF AI to show up. I'll try turning them back to 20% and see.

Max RPM, and other things
I agree with most of your comments Bernt (some full flight sims are better simulations than others in the aero areas - it depends on their age and the software team and the original acceptance team). All I want is something that 'feels' as though it handles correctly in normal use. I don't use FSX as a 'edge of the envelope' thrill, more as I believe a pilot would in everyday use. How often do line pilots carry out stalls in the course of normal flying? They just don't go near those limits if they can help it.Back on the PA46 topic - on my PC, using Saitek controls, it 'flies' very well. Certainly the best handling addon in the takeoff and landing phases I have installed. I wont be able to compare it to the real thing anyway...Still think it's Carenado's best release to date.
-
Max RPM, and other things
If I can just add to the 'realistic' debate - I work on level D full-flight simulators for airlines. Level D is the highest certification of training device in the JAA (Europe) area - the FAA have a similar level. The data package provided by the aircraft manufacturers costs in excess of $1million dollars for a commercial aircraft like a 737. It covers any number of performance areas from taxi, take-off, cruise, landing, engine failures and so on. You would be amazed at the number of pilots who get out of these things and say 'it doesnt feel like the real thing' but are unable to say why.Small aircraft have much less data available, even if it is for sale, so criticising Carenado for not matching the real aircraft performance is a bit harsh. FSX is hardly a cutting edge aerodynamic simulation. It started as a game and has been continually added to over how many years? Some people seem to be asking far too much of it.Just my 10 pence (or cents) worth...

Dynamic VC shadows
Err, not that I am aware of in Dx9. Remember FSX is at least 6 year old software and based on older hardware than most use now.Can always wait for Microsaft Flight....

Follow VOR course?
Wow - an update when I didn't even know it was a problem! Thanks Bernt. She will get airborne and fly (with care) okay in those conditions. Cairns runway is long enough and by 500ft with judicious power lever control you can get her up to 110 kts. Climb out is a bit slow and flat initially tho'....

Follow VOR course?
Thanks for that Bert. Must have been suffering from brain fade as it works now (or I had tuned a DME?).Might also have been dazzled by the best Carenado release to date - really does look and fly superbly well. Fantastic modelling inside and out and a brilliant flight model. The new Carenado team is obviously working very well :( . She only needs a bit more system depth (especially fuel and electrics - I can live with the avionics as is for the performance).
